Love Plus SIM girls charge up phones, consoles

One of the biggest trends last year was the promotion of otaku favorite game Love Plus to the higher and more mainstream echelons of the iPhone and, even more interestingly, the emergence of tie-ins with travel and karaoke services.

The band wagon will keep on rolling till its run out of steam, of course. Not content to simply play the virtual dating SIM game on your mobile phone or DS, even when charging your handset up you may want to get your fix of cute character charm.

Enter the new Love Plus Phone Charger, which works with your Japanese cellphone, iPhone or game console and is, needless to say, fully decorated with one of the game’s leading ladies. Apparently every activity, no matter how mundane, can now be refined to have relevance to your SIM romance.

After choosing which girl you want (Manaka, Nene or Rinko) you then have to put on your patience cap and wait till February for the official release. No doubt, if this latest merchandise is a hit then there’ll be more to tempt the wallets of otaku consumers. The local price is 5,480 yen (about $67.50), which, though the charger works with a lot of different handsets, still seems quite a lot to pay to the uninitiated at least.

How Are The PS3′s And Wii’s Doing On eBay?

This article was written on November 22, 2006 by CyberNet.

PS3/Wii on eBay

It has almost been a week and it looks like the sales of PS3′s and Wii’s have dwindled down a bit on eBay. I have seen some of the Playstation 3′s go for as low as $850 which is just a few hundred above the actual cost of the system. That’s not that bad considering the fact that the “real” sales on eBay were previously going for around $3000. The Nintendo Wii is  also extremely reasonable and will only run you around $400 on eBay.

Looking through the auctions will reveal some amazingly clever schemes to try and get people to buy from them. One of the most common things is having a girl pose with the system. Some of them even appear to be topless (even though nothing is visible) in hopes of getting a little boost in sales. This auction, for example, says that the girl will hand deliver the Playstation 3 to the winner if the sale got above $19,000…but the auction has already ended and it didn’t even get a bid at the ridiculous $10,000 starting price.

When I sorted the listings according to price this was one of the first ones to come up. That is because the starting price is $1 million but they are kindly accepting and promptly declining offers. What’s so special about this auction? With the current 72 offers and more than 10,000 views this is what they are offering:

YOU ARE BIDDING ON FOUR BRAND NEW PLAYSTATION 3 (60GB) PLUS FOUR NEW NINTENDO WIIs!!!!  YOU ALSO GET 1 OF EVERY GAME YOU WANT FROM OUR HUGE LISTS BELOW!!!  These will all be PERSONALLY hand delivered to 4 addresses of your choice!!!… I WILL LITERALLY FLY/DRIVE TO THE ADDRESSES YOU GIVE ME DRESSED UP LIKE SANTA!

The auction is actually a little misleading because it says you get 1 of every game that is listed…but looking at the pictures makes me think you get 1 of every game for every system! It is absolutely crazy what some people come up with and are able to get their hands on.

Wiimote: More than Meets the Eye

This article was written on April 17, 2008 by CyberNet.

The Wii has become rather notorious for the specialized controllers that it uses to draw people into the game being played. It’s very much possible that you’ve been using the controllers for quite some time without actually knowing what they are capable of doing.

Don’t worry, Johnny Lee is here to open your naive eyes. He has a page setup on his site that is merely for the Wii projects that he has undergone, which there are currently three of. For most of the projects you don’t even need a Wii console… just the Wiimote and a computer will do. To top it all off he not only provides the downloads of the applications but also the source code!

So what has he done that is so great? The video below shows off two projects that he has been very successful at. The first is a budget whiteboard that will cost just barely more than the Wiimote itself. And the second project is a head tracking gadget that could bring a new meaning to 3D games. If you’ve got about 6-minutes to spare I’m sure you’ll find this video thoroughly entertaining:

Pretty cool, huh? It’s really amazing that something as simple as a game controller could have so many different uses.

If you didn’t get enough geekiness from that video you should head on over to Johnny Lee’s site where he has some less formal, but more detailed videos of the projects in action. Let us know if you decide to take it to the next level and actually get one of his projects running yourself. ;)

This is your brain. This is your brain on video games

Sure, you’ve probably seen countless scientific studies involving video games — but have you have you ever wondered what your brain actually looked like while your playing video games? Well, feast your eyes on the image above. That’s an MRI scan of New York Times writer Matt Richtel’s brain that was captured while he played a simple driving game — all in the name of science (and journalism), of course. As Richtel notes, however, that’s just one example of the ways researchers are using such technology to “map the ethereal concept of attention,” and scientists have turned up some other interesting findings as of late. Researchers at the University of Utah, for instance, have found that people’s ability to juggle two tasks begins to drop off in their 30s and then sharply drops in their 40s, which contradicts earlier suspicions that people’s ability to multitask only began to degrade when they’re much older. Some other researchers are still suspicious of those findings, however, and Dr. Gazzaley of the University of California at San Diego is quick to point out that all of this research is still in the earliest stages — he’s expecting some more detailed findings next year when his team expands their tests and begin to incorporate EEG monitoring as well.

LucidLogix virtualization tech enables AMD and NVIDIA GPUs to play together with Sandy Bridge

It’s baaack. We’ve gone well over half a year without hearing a peep from black magic makers LucidLogix, but here on the doorstep of CES 2011, the company has resurfaced just in time to ride on the coattails of Intel’s forthcoming Sandy Bridge platform. Sandy is expected to take over CES when companies start to introduce new PCs in just a few days, and thanks to Lucid’s virtualization software, we wouldn’t be surprised if a few are served with NVIDIA and AMD GPUs. This here technology enables the two to play nice, making the outlandish fantasy of using a multi-GPU, multi-vendor setup a reality. DirectX 11 is also supported, with the only real requirement being to “connect the display screen directly to the motherboard’s Sandy Bridge display output.” We’ll be taking a closer look at the peacemaker once we land in Vegas, but for now, go ahead and prepare yourself for a beta version of ‘Virtu’ — it’ll hit at some point next month.

Wii Laptop mod ditches the disc, gets ultra portable (video)

The famed Ben Heckendorn concocted the first Wii Laptop of note way back in 2007, but ever since, the modding community at large has been toiling away on ways to improve it. ShockSlayer, a member over at Mod Retro, has accomplished just that, with his predictably titled Wii Laptop relying on a 7-inch LCD, an integrated sensor bar, a couple of polycases and inbuilt speakers. There’s hardly anything here that couldn’t be found at your local Radio Shack, save for the SunDriver — that particular product has enabled him to ditch the DVD drive and install a SATA HDD within. From there, he burned his Wii game discs and loaded ’em all inside, making the whole thing extra mobile. Oh, and did we mention that it’s powered by rechargeable batteries? Because it is. Marvel at the completed device in the video after the break.

MSI teases Killer NIC integration in Big Bang motherboards

You won’t be coloring us surprised here — when we spoke with Bigfoot Networks CEO Michael Howse back at Computex, he didn’t hesitate to disclose his interest in embedding Bigfoot’s networking technology into motherboards and GPUs of the future. And now, it seems that the future has arrived. Based on a sneaky, nondescript release posted after the break, it looks as if Bigfoot and MSI will be hooking up at CES next week to introduce a newfangled version of the Big Bang motherboard. The announcement doesn’t come right out and say it, but considering that at least one MSI motherboard will be “blazing with Killer 2100 performance,” we’d say it’s fair to read between the lines. Howse is also quoted as saying that he’s “pleased to be working with MSI,” and up until now, there’s been no public partnership between the two firms. According to him, the Killer 2100 gaming network card “is a perfect complement to the MSI Big Bang family of mainboard solutions,” and you can bet we’ll be on the hunt for a model name, price and release date just as soon as we hit Vegas.

Japanese paper pegs PlayStation Phone for spring launch

In case you needed any more evidence that Sony is ramping up to launch a gaming system on a phone in the next few months, here you go: Japanese rag Asahi Shimbun says that the PlayStation Phone — which could be known as the Zeus Z1, Xperia Play, or something else altogether by the time it’s on store shelves — is expected in the spring of 2011 for a North American and European release. That lines up with virtually everything we’ve been hearing lately, and it’s also fortuitous timing considering that both CES and MWC are right around the corner; we don’t know what Sony Ericsson might have on tap for CES, but we definitely know they’re planning some new Xperia-branded models for MWC. There are many questions left unanswered — how (and if) any of this ties into the standalone PSP2, how gaming titles will be purchased, and how many models will be available that support the platform, just to name a few — but hopefully Sony can clear all that up here within the next few weeks.

The Legend of Zelda prototype surfaces, makes itself readily available

Retro gamers, take note — The Legend of Zelda is back, and this version’s more intriguing than ever. From the pits of a mythical, magical unknown lair has arisen an early build of the original FDS version of Zelda, and thanks to the wonders of the internet (along with a few dedicated Earthlings), we’re able to break down the differences between the prototype and the retail edition, download the FDS image and pore over the disk scans. From what we’ve been able to gather thus far, the early version is quite a bit easier to beat than the final build, with fewer enemies, easier money and more gullible partners. Sounds like our kind of place. Hit the links below to nerd out in fantastic fashion.

Nintendo 3DS pre-orders begin at GameStop, still no official US price

The forumites at NeoGAF were chatting it up all evening, and sure enough, it’s true — starting this morning, you can reserve a Nintendo 3DS by dropping a stack of change at any GameStop store. How high you’ll have to pile the coin seems to depend on the location, as a New York employee wanted us to deposit $50, even as an Arizona store said we’d only need to bankroll a modest $25. Not that it much matters, as either way your money will go directly towards the as-yet-undetermined (likely $300) purchase price. Should your local GameStop fail to recognize the autostereoscopic handheld’s impending availability, just kindly ask them to consult their computer, find the SKU field, and type in the magic numbers “020132.” Then, painstakingly wait until March to claim your prize.
