Game Gripper continues its evolution with a new Epic 4G model, Genesis button layout (video)

Sweet, sweet Game Gripper. You make smartphone gaming a rather less cramping experience, and now you’re spreading joy to the fourth generation. Owners of Sprint Epic 4G can now get their Gripper on, and can do so with a lovely new Genesis-inspired layout that offers two rows of three buttons plus a D-pad — and then another four buttons for good measure. It’s rather excitedly demonstrated after the break and, like the earlier models, will set you back $14.99. Now, if only we could get handset makers to start adding shoulder buttons on their cellies.

Chinese man plays MMO on titanic screen, pleads for higher pixel density (video)

Never mind your 103-inch plasmas or Guinness Word Record-holding stadium displays, real gamers do their thing on LCDs that span a cool seven thousand and five hundred square meters (translated into imperial measuring units, that’s… a lot!). What you see above is a little glimpse of an MMO enthusiast with a big passion and no less sizable wallet. The gent in question was displeased by the fact a competing guildmaster in the Chinese MMO Magic World Online 2 got to play in an IMAX theater, and therefore decided to one-up him in the only way possible: by hiring Beijing’s crazily oversized display (titled “All Beijing, look up!”) for a little session of supersized gaming. Jump past the break to see it on video.

Nintendo returning to CES after a 16-year absence

If there’s one event that’s immune to being overhyped, it’s the annual January expo of everything consumer electronics, known to you and us as CES. The only downer to this geek endurance test is that we’ve felt it’s been lacking a little on the gaming front lately, which is why we’re so giddy to hear the news that Nintendo will be rejoining the ranks of exhibitors over in Las Vegas in a few weeks’ time. CES 2011 will be the first time in 16 years that the console sales leader has deigned to pitch up a stand at America’s biggest tech show, with our suspicion being that the event will be used as an opportunity to remind the world about the upcoming 3DS handheld. Or to drop that Wii HD bombshell we’ve all been waiting for. Yeah, right!

Target Breaks Street Date for Xbox 360 Elite – Now Selling on eBay!

This article was written on April 19, 2007 by CyberNet.

One lucky guy in California managed to get his hands on an Xbox 360 Elite well before the launch date of April 29th. He’s got pictures and a receipt to show this, and he’s now selling it on eBay.

Xbox360elite

How could something like this happen you’re wondering? Well, it’s pretty simple.  He purchased this item at Target.  Certain items like this don’t come on the “Target” truck, and instead, they come via special delivery with the “street date” printed in bright colors on the box. The Target employee(s) probably didn’t pay any attention to the street date, and ended up putting them on the shelves (which they can get fined for if this is the case).

Or, this guy works there, or knows someone and managed to coerce them into selling him one. I’d like to think it was an honest mistake by a Target employee who didn’t pay attention to the street date though.

On the other hand, it’s surprising that Microsoft has already made the shipments of these items.  Usually they get delivered much closer to the launch date, sometimes even a day before-hand.

The current bid is $800, and it will be ending tomorrow. The guy paid $514.79 with tax, so no matter what, he’ll be walking away with a decent profit!

Special Google Reader Optimized for Wii

This article was written on May 08, 2007 by CyberNet.

Google Wii

There is a new Google Reader available for Wii users that will make reading your news even easier. To access the Wii version just go to http://www.google.com/reader/wii and you’ll see something similar to the screenshot above.

Google WiiSince this has to be optimized for low-resolution screens this version removes the sidebar that lets you select the subscriptions and also uses large fonts that are easy to read. To select from certain subscriptions you can press the “1 button” on your Wii remote which will show a transparent menu similar to the one pictured to the right.

Here are the rest of the shortcuts you’ll need to know when using this on your Wii:

  • up/down: scroll up/down
  • right/left: next/previous item
  • 1 button: show subscriptions (opens in transparent menu)
  • 2 button: show links (opens in transparent menu)

When showing the list of subscriptions you can use these shortcuts:

  • up/down: previous/next subscription
  • right: select current subscription
  • left: close
  • -/+: collapse/expand folder

I’m not sure if I would want to use this as my dedicated feed reader since I have hundreds of subscriptions, but it would be great for any casual reader just wanting to see if anything interesting has come up recently. It loads pretty fast and makes it easy to go from one feed item to another by using the right/left buttons on your Wiimote.

I played with it on my desktop browser (since I don’t have a Wii) and it seemed to work pretty good there, too. All of the shortcuts were still functional, but the text is so big that people would think I was blind. ;)

For those of you who do have a Wii you’ll have to let me know how well it works, and how easy it is to navigate through your feeds.

Visit http://www.google.com/reader/wii to see the Wii-optimized version of the Google Reader.

Maingear targets mid-range PC gamers with Alt-15 and Alt-17 laptops

Just a month after pushing out a smaller duo of gaming laptops, Maingear has now revealed an entirely new line catering to mid-range gamers. The Alt-15 and Alt-17 both start right around the magical $1,000 point, and moreover, both rely on NVIDIA’s graphics-switching Optimus technology to conserve battery life when you don’t need the GPU pegged. The Alt-15 is a 15.6-incher with a Core i5 or Core i7 Mobile processor, NVIDIA’s GeForce GT 425M (1GB), up to 8GB of DDR3 memory, an optional Blu-ray drive, your choice of an HDD or SSD, Windows 7, a fingerprint reader, HDMI / VGA outputs, a USB 3.0 socket (plus a trio of USB 2.0 sockets) and a $1,049 base price. The bigger, beefier Alt-17 gets away with a 17.3-inch LCD (1080p) and most of the same specifications as listed above, though you’ll see a starting tag that’s $50 more. Hit the links below if you’re up for a little customization.

Shocker! GameStop expects Kinect and Move to be in short supply this holiday season

Are you prepared to be blown away? Have your mind flipped inside-out? Experience a revelation to end all revelations? Tough luck, bubs. During an earnings call yesterday, GameStop president Tony Bartel was cited as saying that both Microsoft’s Kinect and Sony’s PlayStation Move would both be difficult to find this holiday season, noting that the Kinect would be “a hot item through the holiday season and the key opportunity will be just to continue to keep them in stock.” He also stated that the Move would be “in short supply,” and even went so far as to predict that consumers would be “following the UPS truck to our stores to pick up that product as soon as they can find it.” Naturally, GameStop’s in-stock guarantee won’t apply to the two things it actually should (read: Kinect and Move), and Tony stopped short of providing hard evidence that this so-called shortage would in fact occur. But hey, no one ever said that drumming up demand for a product your store hawks was a bad business move, you know? And on the real, we’re guessing that Santa will actually have the hots for these things, and if you’re considering one, it’s always wise to be proactive. Or spend countless nights attempting to snipe Johnny Doe on eBay — your call.

Razer Lachesis 5600 Hands On

Lachesis 5600 - Top Right

Last month, when Razer updated the popular Lachesis Gaming Mouse with a much more sensitive 5600 DPI laser sensor and 9 independently programmable buttons, and updated the Razer control software included with the Lachesis, we sat up and took notice.
The original Lachesis was a great mouse, but considering its price point there were a few annoying quirks about the mouse that made it difficult to use and a little hard to recommend, when compared against similar gaming mice from Logitech and Microsoft.
Razer was kind enough send one of the new Lachesis mice over to us to put through its paces, and while most of the changes and improvements that Razer has made to the gaming mouse are under the hood, overall we were impressed with them.
The increased mouse sensitivity and more granular DPI control are huge bonuses, and the new Lachesis retains the smooth glide and precise control that made the original popular. Add to that easier-to-use control software, more customizable buttons, and on-board memory for more button profiles, and you have a strong gaming mouse.

Rovio feels the burn of Android fragmentation, plans ‘light’ version of Angry Birds

So, it’s real after all, huh? Android fragmentation is making its way into the news again, and this time it counts. Rovio, developer of a little-known title called “Angry Birds,” has just penned a new blog post detailing the night terrors that have come with coding a single program to work on a cornucopia of platforms. In the weeks since Angry Birds was released to Android users everywhere, the company has been inundated with performance complaints, mostly from users with older / underpowered Android devices or phones using Android 1.6 or earlier. A laundry list of smartphones have now been added to the “unsupported” list (shown in full after the break), but thankfully for you, a “lightweight” version of the game is in the works. According to Rovio, that build won’t reduce the number of levels (or amount of fun / frustration, for that matter), but will instead be optimized for dawdling processors and Android versions that have been helplessly malformed by carriers. Nice going, guys.

[Thanks, Justin]

Rage HD review (iPhone)

The iOS App Store might already have its fair share of addictive and compelling games on offer, but when John Carmack comes calling with his latest megatextured shoot-em-up, you’ve got to sit up and pay attention. Rage HD: Mutant Bash TV isn’t so much a full-fledged game in its own right as it is a teaser for the forthcoming Rage FPS for the PC, and yet even in its pretty limited running time, it managed to woo and thrill us with its visceral gameplay and arresting visuals. It’s easily the best-looking game we’ve yet seen on a mobile device and provides a fine demonstration of just how far Apple’s hardware — on the iPhone 4, iPad, and fourth-gen iPod touch — can be pushed when some appropriately adroit hands are at the graphical controls. But, of course, games are supposed to be fun to play, not just to look at, so why not join us after the break to see how well Rage HD handles its mutant-bashing duties?
