Nexus S still leaking on public photostreams, showing exciting new angles

We know that Samsung’s upcoming Gingerbread-powered Nexus S is curved in a pretty unusual way, and a new photo on Picasa — on one of the same photostreams where we’ve seen “Nexus S” and “GT-i9020” in the EXIF data before — gives us a new glimpse of the phone at a three-quarter view where we can really see just how curved it is. It’s still unclear to us whether the display is involved in the curving or if it’s restricted to the bezel above and below the actual screen, but either way, it’s a distinctive design element that’s sure to attract a lot of attention. Interestingly, the picture was captured on a Google employee’s stream just this weekend, suggesting devices are definitely still out in the field — so let’s hope it launches right alongside Android 2.3 in the next few weeks.

[Thanks, John]

Viacom drops the ban hammer on Google TV devices, blocks streaming episodes

Viacom drops the ban hammer on Google TV, platform gets a little less attractive

We have high hopes that Google TV will evolve into something magical and wondrous over the next year or so as its namesake adds apps and features to flesh out the platform’s somewhat underwhelming current state. Today, though, it just got a little less attractive thanks to a move by Viacom to block full episodes from streaming on your Logitech Revues and your Sony Internet TVs and the like. We’ve confirmed with our own Revue that attempting to stream episodes from network sites like MTV, Nickelodeon, and Comedy Central show messages like “this content is not available for your device,” which is an unfortunate and frustrating change. Yes, the user agent tweak still works, but wouldn’t it be nice if we could all just get along? Surely Google is still working on its content partnership agreements and hopefully things will improve in the future, but given how friendly the company’s past dealings with Viacom have been we’re not optimistic about this particular front.

Gmail Redesigned 2.0 Released; Better Gmail Updated

This article was written on July 30, 2008 by CyberNet.

gmail redesigned.jpgI know that there are a lot of you out there who are using the Gmail Redesigned skin, and you’ll be happy to know that version 2 of the theme was recently released for all Firefox users. This new version includes a few dozen bug fixes, but more importantly they focused on increasing the performance. Gmail Redesigned 2.0 is almost half the size of the first one, and is actually available in three different formats:

  • Standard – This is the standard compressed version of the script. It will have to load all the images it uses (logo, buttons, etc…) from the developer’s website, which may or may not be something you want to rely on.
  • Embedded – This version is also compressed, but the big difference is that it doesn’t retrieve any of the images from the developer’s website. All of the images are embedded directly in the script using base64 URI’s. The bright side is that none of the images have to be downloaded, but this can hinder performance.
  • Developer – This is the full uncompressed version of the skin that even includes comments. It’s really geared towards other people who are looking to modify the skin.

Gmail Redesigned 2.0 also supports all versions of Gmail, both new and old, including the HTML-only view. Now that’s impressive!

Lifehacker has gotten around to updating their Better Gmail extension to include the new version of Gmail Redesigned, which means you can enjoy a refreshing Gmail interface without needing Greasemonkey.

The same developers have also released a dark theme for Google Calendar, and a Google Reader version is apparently on the way. Pretty soon all of your favorite Google products will be sporting a fresh new look!

Special Google Reader Optimized for Wii

This article was written on May 08, 2007 by CyberNet.

Google Wii

There is a new Google Reader available for Wii users that will make reading your news even easier. To access the Wii version just go to http://www.google.com/reader/wii and you’ll see something similar to the screenshot above.

Google WiiSince this has to be optimized for low-resolution screens this version removes the sidebar that lets you select the subscriptions and also uses large fonts that are easy to read. To select from certain subscriptions you can press the “1 button” on your Wii remote which will show a transparent menu similar to the one pictured to the right.

Here are the rest of the shortcuts you’ll need to know when using this on your Wii:

  • up/down: scroll up/down
  • right/left: next/previous item
  • 1 button: show subscriptions (opens in transparent menu)
  • 2 button: show links (opens in transparent menu)

When showing the list of subscriptions you can use these shortcuts:

  • up/down: previous/next subscription
  • right: select current subscription
  • left: close
  • -/+: collapse/expand folder

I’m not sure if I would want to use this as my dedicated feed reader since I have hundreds of subscriptions, but it would be great for any casual reader just wanting to see if anything interesting has come up recently. It loads pretty fast and makes it easy to go from one feed item to another by using the right/left buttons on your Wiimote.

I played with it on my desktop browser (since I don’t have a Wii) and it seemed to work pretty good there, too. All of the shortcuts were still functional, but the text is so big that people would think I was blind. ;)

For those of you who do have a Wii you’ll have to let me know how well it works, and how easy it is to navigate through your feeds.

Visit http://www.google.com/reader/wii to see the Wii-optimized version of the Google Reader.

New “3D” Buildings Feature with Google Maps

This article was written on April 12, 2007 by CyberNet.

Google continues to add new features to their map service, and the latest is a “3D” buildings feature which you can find in some of the major cities around the United States and Tokyo, Japan. It’s really more like 2.5D buildings as Google Earth Blog is calling it.

When you go to Google Maps, select a big city like San Francisco, Chicago, New York, etc., and then zoom in. I found that the “2.5D” looks best when it’s either one notch away from being fully zoomed in, or zoomed in all the way. The screenshot below came from New York City.

3dgooglemap

There are 35 cities in all that have this look to them.  Unfortunately there’s no rotating or tilting, what you see is what you get.  But because of the shading, you can get a general idea of the height and shape of the building.

One exception to this that some of the taller buildings in big cities like the John Hancock, and the Sears Tower in Chicago don’t exactly look 3D. Certain buildings look better than others.

If you’re not a fan of the new look, unfortunately you’ll have to live with it because this isn’t a feature that can be disabled.

I think it’s a nice addition because you’re able to get an idea of what’s surrounding you, and when you switch to the Satellite mode, there’s not that many differences between the views.

AutoBot app tracks your car if it tries to roll without you

AutoBot app lets you track your car if it tries to roll out without you

We smell a Hasbro lawsuit coming with this one, but for now AutoBot is a funky name for a potentially great iPhone and Android app. Working in concert with a Bluetooth OBD-II dongle (not unlike the Superchips Vivid), it lets you diagnose engine troubles, keep track of maintenance, and locate your car via GPS coordinates — useful for when some Decepticon tries to make off with your ride or when you’re simply running low on energon and can’t remember where you parked. It can even be configured to automatically send a text to loved ones should you get into an accident, specifying your GPS coordinates and ruining any hope of hitting the body shop before dad finds out. The Mavizon-developed app recently won a startup competition at i-Stage 2010 and sadly isn’t slated to be available until 2012, but we should be getting an early look at CES. When it does ship it’ll cost $300 for the hardware and the software, though an extra fee will be required if you want to banish pop-up ads back to Cybertron.

Velocity Micro’s 7-inch Cruz Tablet now shipping for $300

Not kosher with ponying up $500+ for an Android tablet? You’ve got options, kid. Velocity Micro’s Cruz Tablet has finally hit the shipping stage, and sure enough, it’s doing so in the month that was promised back in September. $299.99 lands you a 7-inch Android 2.0 tablet with an 800 x 480 capacitive touch panel, 512MB of RAM, 12GB of total storage, 802.11n WiFi, inbuilt speakers, a headphone jack, mini-USB port and a rechargeable Li-ion good for around ten hours of use — or so they say. Of course, you’ll be stuck accessing the Cruz Market rather than the bona fide Android Market, and you can forget about embedded 3G. But hey, it’s three Benjamins sans any sort of life-altering contract. And that’s got to count for something, right?

[Thanks, Anonymous]
