Verizon prolongs its free hotspot party on 4G LTE phones, but then what?

If you’ve been maxing out on Verizon’s mobile hotspot offer that came with your new Samsung Droid Charge, HTC Thunderbolt or LG Revolution, then do carry on. The offer has been extended again, letting you use your 4G LTE handset as a WiFi hotspot for free until July 6th. On that miserable day, a software update will pull the plug and then who knows how much you’ll have to pay? Verizon says its $20/GB tethering charge won’t apply to 4G LTE phones, but it doesn’t state exactly how much it will cost. Oh well, who needs 12Mbps anyway?

99% of Android devices vulnerable to authentication attack

By this point, just about everyone knows how risky connecting to an unsecured wireless access point can be. Unfortunately, many public Wi-Fi hotspots forego security in exchange for convenience, and that ultimately leaves users exposed to attacks. Based on new research from the University of Ulm in Germany, Android users appear to be in even […]

Samsung Droid Charge gets minor update to Media Hub, Verizon extends free Thunderbolt hotspot offer

Wondering why your barely-out-of-the-box Droid Charge is already getting a software update? Wonder no more, as it’s merely a tweak for Samsung’s Media Hub application that disables downloads over 3G. It’s kind of a shame, really, as that means if you don’t live in an LTE market you’ll need to be tied to a WiFi hotspot to get your multimedia there, but Verizon claims it’s a compromise to “ensure quality and speed.”

Meanwhile, Verizon’s other LTE handset is getting an additional boon — the carrier’s extending its free wireless hotspot offer through June 15th for the HTC Thunderbolt, after which you can expect to pay $20 a month for the WiFi tethering privilege. Enjoy it while it lasts, folks.

Houston grandmother becomes host of first ‘super WiFi’ hotspot, proves you’re never too old for wireless

This ain’t your grandma’s WiFi — that is, unless your grandma is 48 year-old Leticia Aguirre. The Houston woman became the host of the very first “super WiFi” hotspot, earlier this week — the new network takes advantage of unused UHF TV channels to bring internet service to underserved communities. In collaboration with researchers at Rice University, a Houston-based non-profit fittingly referred to as Technology for All (TFA), facilitated the setup and is in the process of deploying more whitespace hotspots across the area. The FCC approved use of whitespace for the new “super WiFi” back in September of last year. Full PR after the break.

Verizon brings out LTE-riding MiFi 4510L, asks for $100 on a two-year contract or $270 without

We saw this little guy back at CES in January and then last month heard it wouldn’t be long before it started retailing around the good old US of A. That day has now come, with Verizon officially kicking off sales of its first LTE MiFi device, the 4510L. It’s not cheap, at $100 on contract (with a $175 ETF, to boot) or $270 when bought by its lonesome. Still, if you can afford it, this Novatel-produced gadget will turn the nearest Verizon airwaves (4G or 3G, it can handle both) into familiar 802.11b, g or n WiFi signals, which your laptop, smartphone, tablet, or LAN rig can then gobble up with gay abandon. It’s capable of serving as a mobile hotspot for up to five devices at a time, and promised LTE speeds range between 5Mbps and 12Mbps on the downlink and 2Mbps to 5Mbps when uploading. Check out the press release after the break or the source link to get your own.

P.S. — Verizon has also tweeted a promise that it’ll be launching LTE service in “a mess of new cities and towns” on Thursday.

T-Mobile’s 4G Mobile Hotspot going on sale April 13?

Well, well. Android Central got a hold of a leaked document revealing that T-Mobile’s 4G Mobile Hotspot, the first of its kind for the carrier, is slated to go on sale April 13th. We’re inclined to believe it, since T-Mo just confirmed that the LG G2x, also named in the doc, will indeed go on sale April 15th. Alas, if you’ve been waiting for more info about the pricey, Honeycomb-powered T-Mobile LG G-Slate, you can keep holding your breath: all we know is that it’s coming “soon.”

Verizon’s Samsung LTE Mobile Hotspot goes on sale: $100 on contract

We’d heard March 31st for this thing, but hey — are we about to complain when it goes on sale early? That would be a definitive “no,” and we’re happy to report that Samsung’s SCH-LC11 Mobile Hotspot with 1x, EV-DO Rev. A, and LTE compatibility on Verizon’s network is now being offered on the carrier’s website for $99.99 on contract after a $50 instant discount. That makes it the cheapest way to get five devices attached to some of the fastest wireless broadband around — sure, you can do it with a Thunderbolt, but it’ll run you a little more upfront and you need a voice plan. Who’s in?

[Thanks, Nick R.]

London Underground to get 120 WiFi hotspots in advance of the 2012 Olympics

A big announcement arrived today if you live in or around London: to prepare to the onslaught of data-hungry visitors for the 2012 Olympic games that the city is hosting, 120 WiFi hotspots are being added to various locations along the Underground subway system’s stations and platforms, in addition to other measures being taken to beef up tech. No WiFi will be in the actual tunnels, mind you, but it should definitely come in handy for all those tourists trying to find their way around the city. British Telecom has already tolled out a trial run at the Charing Cross station, with further installations expected in the lead up to the games.

ZTE gets tight with T-Mobile, launches Rocket 3.0 modem and 4G Mobile Hotspot for HSPA+

ZTE gets tight with T-Mobile, launches Rocket 3.0 modem and 4G Mobile Hotspot for HSPA+

T-Mobile‘s 42Mbps HSPA+ coverage is expanding and expanding, and ZTE is helping to bring it back down to earth. The company has launched two new wireless devices especially for the T-Mo’s 42Mbps service, the first being the Rocket 3.0, a USB modem that’s due this spring. The second is the simply titled 4G Mobile Hotspot, the same we got a little quality time with earlier, which beams out WiFi connectivity for up to five devices at one time. If you can’t handle all that speed, ZTE also has the Jet 2.0 and Rocket 4G, both of which top out at 21Mbps. All should be available in the next few weeks, and all should help you get your bits on from anywhere.

Audi Connect signs contract with T-Mobile, surprised like the rest of us by the AT&T thing

Audi Connect signs contract with T-Mobile, surprised like the rest of us by the AT&T thing

T-Mobile subscribers at this point are preparing for what could be a new, blue overlord, and now you can count Audi among the ranks of those wondering what’s next. Yesterday the company with the rings signed on with the company with the magenta to power its Audi Connect system on US cars. It’ll launch first with the 2012 Audi A7, where it will provide the wireless data pipe through which the car’s MMI infotainment system will pull down Google Earth imagery, Local Search POIs, Sirius Traffic information, and even act like a Quattro hotspot for folks in the back seat. Audi’s not specified how much this service will cost, but “not free” sounds like a safe bet for now.
