HP’s Pavilion dv2 spotted in the wild, on sale in Thailand

The first machine to rely on AMD’s Neo MV-40 processor has officially been spotted outside of a show floor, though you’ll have to jet to Bangkok if you’re looking to touch one yourself. The atypically well-specced 12.1-inch Pavilion dv2 has been spotted over in Thailand for around $720, and while it doesn’t look drastically (or at all, really) different than what we saw at CES this year, it’s good to see this bugger finally creeping into homes. Check the read link for a few more angles and impressions, and feel free to get your hopes up for a US release in the not-too-distant future.

HP TouchSmart airport kiosk hands-on

HP has hooked up with the City of Chicago to install a whole bunch of TouchSmart 2-powered kiosks for a period of six months, offering weary travelers an all-too-brief respite from their normal routine as they wander through O’Hare International Airport’s many nooks and crannies. In terms of functionality, we’re not talking about much action here — don’t expect to plop down and catch up on email or video call the fam on Skype — but users can head over to the city’s tourism website, watch a video about the TouchSmart’s capabilities, and browse a whole bunch of sweet (and huge) images of the city courtesy of GigaPan. The high-megapixel imagery suits the system’s multitouch capabilities to a T, but needless to say, the high-gloss display doesn’t get along too well with Terminal 1’s harsh lighting; check out the video after the break to see what we mean.

WSJ: Android being considered for HP netbook, Dell MID and smartphone

Sure, we’ve already seen Android pop up on the HP 2133 Mini-Note thanks to some intrepid DIYers, but now comes word from The Wall Street Journal that HP’s got programmers looking into using the Google OS officially for an upcoming netbook. VP of the PC division Satjiv Chahil’s quoted as saying they’re in the process of assessing its capabilities, so don’t get your hopes up anytime soon. Also mentioned is Asus, which we already knew about from back in February. Interestingly, the report states that Dell’s been tweaking the software for use in multiple devices due out this year, including a MID and one of those long-rumored smartphones — that is, assuming they make one that can tickle the carrier’s fancy.

Update: HP confirms that it is testing Android but “has made no decision yet whether to offer Android in products.”

Greenpeace slams HP, Lenovo, and Dell in latest report

HP, Lenovo, and Dell haven’t fared too badly in some of Greenpeace’s previous e-waste reports, but it looks like three companies have fallen well short of the organization’s expectations this time around, with each getting called out for failing to live up to their promises. Specifically, all three had said that they would eliminate vinyl plastic (PVC) and brominated flame retardants (BFRs) in their products by the end of this year, but they’ve now apparently told Greenpeace that they won’t be able to meet that timeline, and only Lenovo has come forward set a new deadline (the end of 2010). The big winner, on the other hand, is Philips, which has jumped from 15th place to 4th as a result of some new recycling initiatives, prompted at least in part by public pressure. And, as you can see above, Nintendo is once again dead last, although we’re pretty sure that’s simply a result of sheer mass at this point.

HP Z800 workstation supports SLI Multi-OS, newest Xeon processors

What do you get when you mash up yesterday’s Intel Xeon 5500 and NVIDIA Quadro FX announcements with a bruiser BMW DesignWorksUSA case? The HP Z800 workstation, that’s what — and while it’s clearly more machine than most of us need, it’s almost just as certainly the machine we deserve. Right? Right. Inside the super-configurable case beats two quadcore Nehalem Xeon 5400 CPUs that appear as 16 cores to Windows, and optional SLI Multi-OS-capable NVIDIA graphics cards that allow you to use SLI under virtualization. Pricing starts at a seemingly-reasonable $1,999 and cruises north of $14K — anyone want to lend us some cash?

New HP MediaSmart Server LX195 caught out there by Mr. Blurrycam

HP MediaSmart Server enthusiast skeeter has uncovered what looks like the latest addition to the line, the LX195. Sporting a mere 640GB, MediaSmartServer.net speculates this edition could be a single drive model, slotting in below the EX475 and EX485 with additional hard drive space added via USB. That’s all there is to know, at least until someone gets a peek at one outside the box.

Someone Found Microsoft’s Lauren! And She’s an Actress

We were hoping to catch up with Microsoft’s “Lauren,” a regular gal who Microsoft surprised with $1,000 to buy a laptop…in a national commercial. And it ends up she’s an LA-based, SAG-eligible actress. UPDATE

Tracked down by TechFlash, “Lauren” (who is really Lauren De Long) says on her site “[she] booked what she thought was a “Market and Research” job regarding laptops. But that’s not all she booked…actually Lauren found out they were shooting a national commercial! Tears, laughter and excitement greeted this new development.”

The Wall Street Journal reported that the Microsoft test group had been assembled from “recruited prospective computer shoppers.” Shoppers are distinctly different from people looking for jobs. Regardless-

Reading through De Long’s resume, you find that her “special skills” include Cheerleading, Ear Prompter, Hula Hoop, and Stage Combat. So wait, she’s an actress AND a cheerleader AND a stage combatant, but she’s STILL not cool enough to use a Mac? No way. We just don’t buy it.

We were unable to reach Lauren De Long, but we did leave her a message mentioning one of our readers’ offers to give her a free 17-inch Apple PowerBook. When site TechFlash called, apparently De Long said she had signed an NDA restricting her from speaking about her experiences with the HP laptop.

UPDATE: Lauren De Long just returned our call. She said, “Thanks for tracking me down and everything…I’m humbled and honored by all the attention, but I’m trying to gracefully turn down any interviews.” She then confirmed that an NDA sealed her from talking about anything pertaining to the commercial (which means that our own Mitch is out of luck—Lauren can’t do any sort of Mac vs. HP value comparison). But we have good news, Mitch. A number of our readers wrote in letting us know that they’d be happy to take the laptop off your hands! [Lauren’s Site and Lauren’s Bio via TechFlash]

HP Mini 1000 VGA cables: hard to get, hard to use?

HP’s Mini 1000 certainly hasn’t had much difficultly attracting its share of fans, but it looks like those wanting to hook the netbook up to an external monitor have been having their patience tested considerably as of late. According to reports on the HP Support Forums, the promised VGA adapter for the netbook has been nigh impossible to come by and, for the time being at least, HP doesn’t seem to be getting any more specific than “early 2009” about widespread availability. The headaches might not end then, however, as some folks have been reporting problems with the VGA out for the very similar Mini 2140 netbook, and with a USB-to-VGA adapter used with the Mini 1000. In both cases, the Mini 1000 is apparently unable to automatically detect the external monitor’s native resolution, so it simply pumps out a standard 1024 x 768 resolution no matter what size monitor is hooked up. Looking for more tales of woe? Then dive into thread linked below for the full rundown of laments.

[Thanks, Shane]

Cheap Geek: Archos Media Player, wiRevo Bluetooth Adapter, Toshiba Laptop and HP Printer

archos.jpg

Before most of us make a purchase, the question “Do I really need this?” comes into play. The answer could be yes, but you can mull that over while checking out these bargains. Here are Gearlog’s deals for Wednesday, March 11:

1. Amazon.com has a hell of a deal on the 30GB Archos 605 Wi-Fi Portable Media Player. Normally $299.99, today, the Archos is just $159.99. You can record TV shows, stream and watch videos from your PC, and download movies and music directly. The deal ends today, so move fast.

2. Today’s deal at sellout.woot is the wiRevo A100 Stereo Bluetooth Adapter for iPod and iPhone. Originally with a list price of $99.99, the cheapest I’ve seen it is $19.99, but today’s deal brings it down to $9.99. The adapter allows you to stream audio from an iPod to a Bluetooth stereo headset so you can listen to music wirelessly from your iPod or iPhone.

3. Looking for an inexpensive laptop? The Toshiba Satellite AMD Athlon X2 Dual-Core 2.0GHz 15.4-inch notebook is on sale at OnSale.com for only $449.99 after a mail-in rebate of $50 for the notebook. But that’s not all, you can also get a HP Deskjet Color Inkjet Printer in the $450 bundle. The printer comes with a $70 mail-in rebate as well, saving you $120 off the total price. Both rebates expire March 28. [Via Bargainist.com]

HP rolls out Compaq CQ2000M nettop for Europe

HP’s mini-Q nettop first turned up in Taiwan way back in November, but it looks to finally be making its way around the world, and it’s now shown itself in Europe in the form of the Compaq CQ2000M. There doesn’t appear to be any significant changes beyond the slight name change, however, with the nettop still packing the standard issue 1.6GHz Atom Z230 processor, 1GB of RAM (expandable to 2GB), a 160GB hard drive, Intel GMA950 graphics and, of particular note, a dual-layer DVD burner. Unfortunately, there’s also still no indication of a release on this side of the pond, but those in Europe can apparently grab one now bundled with a 20-inch monitor for €349, or about $440.
