4G variant of HTC’s Radar spotted in the wild, flying a magenta flag

The Radar’s arrival in this world was overshadowed by the massive Titan released on the same day. But if a batch of spy shots sent to TmoNews is to be believed, then this mid-specced 3.8-inch Windows Phone could be about to get some much needed 4G pep on T-Mobile’s network. The photos also reveal plenty of magenta branding, Tango video calling and of course Mango running under the hood. Further corroboration probably won’t come til we detect an HSPA+ Radar at the FCC, but with some decent 6/7Mbps real-world download speeds and hopefully some mobile hotspot action this could well be a device worth having.

Samsung SHV-E120L comes out of the development dark, is the Xtina to LG’s Britney

Brothers from another mobile mother, or just a case of copycat syndrome? We’ll let you be the judge, but from the looks of this latest leak, Samsung’s SHV-E120L could be sharing some of the LG LU6200’s special spec sauce. Outed over on Cetizen and iNews24, the full breakdown of the device’s innards point to a dual-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 4.7-inch 1280 x 720 HD display, 2 megapixel front-facing / 8 megapixel rear camera, 1GB RAM, 16GB of onboard storage, WiFi, Bluetooth and NFC. We’ve seen conflicting reports as to the exact version of Gingerbread that’ll ship on the phone, with Android 2.3.5 in the running. As for the handset’s radios, its purported MDM9600 Gobi chipset indicates tri-mode LTE, HSPA and CDMA compatibility. Sammy’s super-sized smartphone could hit South Korea later this month, or in early October — if the passable English in that Google translation can be believed.

Whoever’s cranking out the kernel source in Samsung’s headquarters has some serious aspirations. Cooking it up for the Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch the day it was released was a rather snappy process, but the manufacturer’s managed to one-up even itself by pushing out AT&T’s version a full week and a half early. Talk about an exciting deal for developers, who now have a sizable head start ahead of the Galaxy S II’s October 2nd launch. Not too shabby, right? Let’s see exactly what those with the know-how can build in the meantime — we predict customization options aplenty by the time the phone’s officially stocked on store shelves. How early can we expect to see the kernel for T-Mobile’s Galaxy S II? Hard to say, but for now you can grab the kernel source at… well, the source below.

HTC Raider 4G arrives bearing South Korean LTE, looks a lot like the Holiday

HTC has bestowed a sparkly new handset upon its South Korean customers today, with the release of the Raider 4G. Sporting a 4.5-inch qHD display, this Gingerbread-coated device is powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and boasts 1GB of RAM, along with 16GB of internal storage. Graced with what appears to be HTC’s Sense 3.0, the Raider also features an eight megapixel camera, 1.3 megapixel front-facing shooter and supports 1080p Full HD video recording, as well as the usual smattering of WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0 and GPS capabilities. When connected to a South Korean LTE network, this handset can reportedly achieve downstream / upstream speeds of 100Mbps and 50Mbps uploads, respectively, with HSPA downloads clocking in at 21Mbps and uploads at 5.76Mbps. The manufacturer hasn’t revealed any plans for an international release, though rumor has it that this Holiday-like device may be heading to AT&T at some point. HP’s unreleased white TouchPad and Pre 3 for AT&T (hands-on video)

What’s this? Some of HP’s unreleased WebOS devices? Well yes! Say hello to the white european TouchPad, the black TouchPad 4G for AT&T, the Pre 3 for AT&T, and our very own Veer 4G review unit, all gathered on a fine specimen of new century modern upholstery. We were able to unbox these devices and handle the hardware, but the software was off limits. The owner of the Pre 3 did activate it for us, but that’s as far as we were able to go. While still heavier and thicker than the competition, the white TouchPad — a 64GB model with the faster 1.5GHz CPU — is significantly more attractive than its black sibling, and less of a fingerprint magnet to boot. AT&T’s TouchPad 4G — with 32GB of storage and the same 1.5GHz processor — features a working SIM slot for the carrier’s faux-G network (HSPA+), but is otherwise cosmetically identical to the existing WiFi version. The Pre 3 is is identical to the one we handled during HP’s announcement last February, save for the AT&T logo on the back. Check out our gallery below, and hit the break for our hands-on video.

‘Personalized Wireless’ launching September 26th (update: it’s Cellular South, and it’ll be regional)

Does America need another wireless operator? Is the MVNO boneyard really due for another? Are you eager for a carrier that adapts to your needs, and magically delivers “stuff” that matters to you? Have you watched Napoleon Dynamite with your closest friends within the past week? We can’t promise that “Personalized Wireless” (or whatever it ends up being called) is destined to answer all of those inquiries, but it’ll at least strive to formulate a logical response to one of ’em. A newly-aired teaser clip promises a network of a different color here in the States, and the company’s product page (captured above) leads to believe that all will be revealed come September 26th. We’re surmising that this has something to do with either Comcast or Clearwire given the token “C” logo at the end, but we’d be happy hear other opinions of the origin down in comments below. Update: We have it on good authority that the launch here relates to Cellular South’s recent buyout of a number of southern cellular shops, with this being the merger of those. There aren’t any details yet on what it’ll mean for prospective customers in that region, but it seems — at least for now — that this won’t be a national rollout.

Game on: Sony Ericsson Xperia Play 4G ready at AT&T for $50

Just over four months after the unique device hit Verizon stores, the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play 4G has now made it past AT&T’s front door and onto shelves nationwide. The unique factor on this particular version of the “PlayStation Phone” is the inclusion of 14.4Mbps HSPA+ — with enhanced backhaul, naturally — and will be the first PlayStation-Certified smartphone on AT&T’s network. At $50, the pricing is certainly competitive since it ships with Android 2.3.3, a 1GHz single-core CPU, Adreno 205 GPU, 4-inch 854 x 480 display, and seven pre-loaded games. At a full $150 less than Big Red’s launch price, the carrier may move a few units. If you’re one of those that could be persuaded, head to the source link and get your shopping on.

4G Samsung Galaxy S II X coming to Telus, still as Herculean as ever

It looks like the Samsung Hercules name won’t live on in mobile infamy, after all. Canadian carrier Telus is now the second (and last) company to shed the Greek God title in favor of the more traditional Galaxy S II moniker — albeit with its own unique twist, of course. The company’s got an official page up for its forthcoming flagship, dubbed the “4G Samsung Galaxy S II X.” Talk about a mouthful, right? The device mirrors T-Mobile’s version rather closely, improving upon the original model with a 4.5-inch Super AMOLED Plus display, HSPA+ download speeds of up to 42Mbps and — here’s where it gets interesting — a 1.5GHz dual-core CPU. We’re still unsure of the chipmaker responsible for supporting the AWS 4G radio, but our money’s on the Qualcomm APQ8060. The ever-frustrating “coming soon” is attached to the page, which seems to be fairly common practice with new phones lately; regardless, we imagine enough people will be willing to forgive and forget once their future toy decides to show up.

Acer Iconia Tab A501 with HSPA+ hits AT&T on September 18th: $330 on contract

As promised, the Acer Iconia Tab A501 is hitting AT&T just before summer draws to an official close. The carrier just announced it’ll start selling the 16GB model next Sunday, September 18th for $480 — or $330 with a two-year contract. When we first heard about this way back in March, we knew it would be a “4G” device, and today AT&T clarified that this means HSPA+, not LTE, so sorry to burst anyone’s bubble. Even so, five months after the A500 went on sale it remains one of a select few slates with a full-sized USB port, so there’s that to consider if you’re still on the fence about getting a tablet. As planned, it’ll ship with Android 3.0, and an Acer rep confirms 3.1 is coming via an over-the-air update, though she couldn’t say when, exactly, that’ll happen. You can sign up for a monthly plan, if you so choose, though you can also pay as you go, with $15 getting you 250MB and $25 expanding your allowance to 2GB. Customers who commit to two-year agreements will have the same choices, to be honest, except they’ll also have to contend with overage fees — $10 per gigabyte or $15 per 250MB, depending on the plan.

Update: We’ve added Acer’s official press release below. Heads up: you’ll notice that Acer lists the price as $499.99 for the 16GB model and $549.99 for the 32GB version. That’s just the manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP). It doesn’t say so in the press release, but AT&T confirmed to us before we published this story that it will actually be selling the 16GB version only, and for $480 (again, that $330 with a two-year contract).
