Hasta La Gadget!

The stars are really aligning for this shindig HTC has scheduled in London for next week, aren’t they? All signs point to the launch of the Android-powered Desire Z and Desire HD — international versions of the G2 and EVO, respectively — and this render pulled off of German site BestBoyZ matches up perfectly with in-the-wild shots we’ve seen of the HD before. The only sticking point, really, is that there’s a Windows Mobile 6.5 Sense UI shot inexplicably plastered on top, which makes about as much sense as… well, re-releasing the HD2 right now. Bottom line, we think the hardware part of this picture is real; software, not so much.

I’ve long held that ROMs are the biggest selling point for Android phones that no one wants to talk about (or are at least neck and neck for those of you who absolutely need your porn on the go). If, after a few drinks, I start having a good natured debate about smartphones with an iPhone owning friend (which does indeed happen more often that I’d care to admit), I’ll usually break out my Droid and start playing a round of Super Mario 3.

However, the Droid QWERTY keyboard is okay–but not great–for such gaming. In fact, I’ve actually worn down some of the keys on the thing playing Super Mario Brothers. And, all things considered, I’ve actually got it good. There are plenty of Android handsets that rely entirely on the touchscreen for control–a pretty miserable way to play a console-formatted sidescroller.

Game Gripper offers a decent and intriguing answer–a controller that slips right over the keyboard of a number of handsets. But let’s be honest–you’re still not playing the way that god (and Shigeru Miyamoto) intended.

With that in mind, I submit to you my nominee for hack of the day. Using an HTC EVO 4G, a BlueSMiRF Bluetooth module, an Arduino board, and, of course, an original NES controller, this fellow designed what is quite possible the ultimate Android/Nintendo hack.

The final product ain’t all that pretty–and, let’s be honest, you’d look pretty dumb playing it on the subway (where most of my own handset gaming occurs)–but damn it if it doesn’t work like a charm

We’ll admit, we’d kinda figured that HTC’s venture into the seedy underworld of dumbphones with the introduction of the Smart earlier this year was a non-starter and that it’d quietly fade into the night before 2010 was out, but apparently not — at least, not if you ask AT&T. We’ve been slid a couple shots of a new handset from HTC for Ma Bell going by the model number F8181 (it’ll have a fancy name like “Bacon,” “Double Rainbow,” or “Nilay Patel” by the time it launches, obviously) that runs the Brew MP platform Qualcomm has been pushing this year for the sub-smartphone category; of course, it seems to us that smartphone hardware is getting cheap enough to push through nearly every price segment, but if we can expect this to be free on contract, we suppose there might be a market here. No word on dollars or dates just yet, but naturally, we’ll keep you in the loop.

It’s been known for some time that Twitter would be moving away from basic authentication to OAuth for third-party apps; in fact, they’d already officially pushed back the drop-dead switchover date once to mid-August before finally pulling the plug this week. Be that as it may, it makes sense that a bunch of lesser-known, less-maintained apps would fall by the wayside once the old security mechanism got shut down — but HTC’s Peep? Really? Sure enough, we’ve been able to confirm on our own Desire that the Twitter app HTC bundles with its Sense UI for Android is no longer working this morning, giving users an “incorrect username or password” error when they try to connect. We’re not sure if they’ll be able to fix this with a Market update across the board or if it’ll take a bunch of firmware updates to get everyone back on the up and up, but either way, something tells us Twitter isn’t going to flip the switch back on for these guys.

Remember that T-Mobile G2 build that leaked out earlier this week? Even if you didn’t, the ROM still managed to find its way onto other Android devices by way of some clever (if not elementary, dear Watson) hacking, and from that very binary comes some vivid imagery. Nothing too surprising or earth-shattering, unless of course you find a Google Voice widget absolutely mind-blowing. And if you do, well, you’re welcome.
