Porsche promises to unveil ‘new model’ in Detroit, could it be the 918 Spyder plug-in?

Porsche promises to unveil 'new model' in Detroit, could it be the 918 Spyder plug-in?

Maybe this is wishful thinking and maybe we’re optimists, but maybe, just maybe, Porsche could be ready to unveil to the world the final version of its supremely hot hybrid. We already know the company has given the 918 Spyder plug-in hybrid a green light for a run down assembly lines, a legitimate supercar with a 700+ horsepower on tap despite achieving near 80mpg. But, we don’t know the when nor the all-important how much. With Porsche promising to give “a new model its world debut” at the North American International Auto Show we can’t help but hope that this is it. Want to be the first to find out? When the time comes you can watch the unveil yourself, live streamed at www.porsche.com/detroit.

Update: Marco wrote in to let us know the spoil-sports at Autobild are indicating this will be just the relatively plain 918, neither a spyder nor a hybrid. We’ll just have to wait a few weeks to see.

Fisker raises Karma plug-in hybrid base price to $95,900, brings that 750i back into consideration

Oh, sure — gas is bound to hit $4 a gallon before 2020, but you can buy an awful let of petrol with the money you’ll save from dodging Fisker’s increasingly expensive Karma. ‘Course, those looking to blow 100 grand on an eco-friendly automobile are probably doing so just to throw Ma Earth a bone, but still — money matters. Originally teased way back in the fall of 2007, Fisker’s first plug-in hybrid still hasn’t ended up anywhere near mass production, but it has managed to see two rather significant upticks in price all the while. Right around two years ago, we saw the $80,000 MSRP boosted by $7,000, and today, prospective customers are being notified via email that the Karma’s base price is now sitting at $95,900 before a $950 destination fee. Granted, the company insists that this includes an integrated solar roof panel (valued at $5,000), and it still starts at $1,400 less than a Panamera S. And yeah, that base price does shrink to $88,400 after you include federal tax incentives. That said, we’re doubting high-rollers that were dead-set on handing over $73,000 or so after tax breaks are currently stoked about an increase this large, particularly when there’s still no definitive ship date. To Fisker’s credit, we’ve seen General Motors go through similar trials and tribulations surrounding the Volt, and even at $95k, you’ll be hard pressed to find more sexy than this on four (street legal) wheels.

Toyota looks set to launch two new Prius models in Detroit, one’s a mystery

Toyota looks set to launch two new Prius models in Detroit, one's a mystery

It’s a sure-fire bet that Toyota will unveil its upright Prius MPV at the North American International Auto Show in a couple of weeks, a rather more roomy and practical version of the hybrid that really started it all. And, of course, the plug-in model we tested in October will be surely rocking the floor. Now we’re hearing that another as of yet unreleased Prius will be on display, simply referred to as a “Prius concept vehicle.” Concept cars of course range from the mundane to the insane, and knowing Toyota we’re guessing this one will fall squarely into the former category. Just the same we’re hoping for a tire-shredding, slalom-eating, RWD hybrid Prius Supra model. We’ll be there in Detroit when the unveil happens and we’ll be sure to bring some tissues to wipe away our tears of disappointment.

GM making Volt parts from oil-soaked booms used in Louisiana, getting greener by the minute

GM making Volt bumpers from oil-soaked booms used in Louisiana, getting greener by the minute

You can be as jaded as you like, and trust us we’ve offered our own fair share of cynicism, but let’s put that aside for a moment as we learn that General Motors is pulling in about 100 miles worth of oil-soaking booms, 100,000 pounds worth that would have otherwise gone into landfills, and turning them into stacks of plastic parts that will go under the hood and in the front bumper of the Chevrolet Volt. The booms of course come from the Louisiana coasts, where oil is still being collected despite the US media having collectively forgotten all about it. These 100 miles of booms will provide enough parts to outfit the entire first-year production Volts and, while we’re sure this is as much a PR move as it is a practical or environmental one, we’re going to go ahead and just call it a win-win.

Russian Hybrid Officially Unveiled, Finally Gets A Name

e-mobile.jpg

The unnamed, Russian built hybrid car that was announced a few months back finally has a name: ë-mobile. Pronounced yo-mobile, the name was announced at the car’s official unveiling in Moscow on Monday.

In addition to the name, the unveiling also showed off the very first prototypes of both the coupe and hatchback versions of the vehicle. It also looks like some of the details have changed since we first heard about the car. It’s now expected to cost around $10,000, achieve a maximum speed of 81 miles per hour, and get 67 miles per gallon. It also includes some nifty features like ability to start the engine with a smart phone app. It’s expected that by 2012, 10,000 ë-mobile cars will be on the road in Russia.

Russian Yo hybrid said to offer 67mpg, cost under $15k, gets a billionaire's backing

Russian entrepreneur Mikhail D. Prokhorov may have big plans for moving the Nets downtown and turning them into the Brooklyn New Yorkers, but another of his big plans will stay a little closer to home. Well, his home anyway. It’s the ë, the Cyrillic character “yo,” and a funky name for a recently revealed hybrid that has scored the billionaire’s support. The ë is a little four-door, four-seater car with a top speed of 80mph and a range of 680 miles, delivered by a hybrid powertrain with two electric motors and a single internal combustion lump. However, unlike the parallel hybrid Prius and the (mostly) series hybrid Volt, both of which rely on expensive and heavy battery packs, the ë will only be able to hold a small charge. Instead the engine, which uses a rotary vane design, will run continuously, spinning a generator and providing the current to turn the wheels. It’s an unusual layout for a car, but if it can deliver its supposed 67mpg at its proposed $14,500 MSRP when it’s slated to hit the streets of St. Petersburg in 2012, you can call us converts — and comrades.

New York City Gets World’s First Hybrid Street Sweeper

Alianz 4000.jpg

A new hybrid vehicle is helping to keep the streets of New York City clean.

Dubbed the Allianz 4000, the new vehicle is touted as being the world’s first hybrid street sweeper. The vehicle features a 200 horse power diesel engine and two 12 volt lithium-ion batteries. It can reach speeds of up to 60 miles per hour and, according to the manufacturer, provides 40 percent in fuel savings when compared to non-hybrid sweepers. As it turns out, the process of making a hybrid sweeper is more difficult than you might imagine.

“A sweeper is not a typical light duty truck and therefore we need to be able to accommodate many different functions including transport, sweeping, dust control, and emmission compliance,” Allianz sales manager Chad Bormann told Wired. “We have the ability to operate using a smaller single diesel engine running at lower RPMs. This alone creates savings against any street sweeper that requires an auxilliary engine in conjunction with the chassis engine to drive and operate the sweep functions. The fuel savings are extreme and the carbon footprint minimal considering that street sweepers are operated for long shifts daily all over the world.”

The Allianz 4000 is currently prowling the streets of New York, but the manufacturer hopes to expand to other cities in the future as well.

Senate approves Pedestrian Safety Enhancement Act, ensures a future for noise pollution

http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/24/prius-gets-optional-underhood-zombie-deterring-noisemaker-soun/

If you’ve been lucky enough to occupy the driver’s seat of a hybrid or electric vehicle you’ve surely enjoyed the bliss that comes from smoothly and silently pulling away from a stoplight. You’ve also, surely, run over at least a couple of pedestrians while doing it. (We hit at least eight of the poor souls during our latest Volt test drive.) Sadly, here comes John Kerry and the rest of the US Senate to ruin our Carmageddon-esque fun. The Senate has unanimously approved the Pedestrian Safety Enhancement Act, which requires:

…minimum level of sound emitted from a motor vehicle that is necessary to provide blind and other pedestrians with the information needed to reasonably detect a nearby electric or hybrid vehicle operating at or below the cross-over speed

How much sound? Well, they haven’t figured that out yet, nor have they figured out up to what speed it must be required, nor what sort of noise is required, but by golly there will be noise. Those answers will in theory be found through the course of a study that will take no more than 48 months to complete, leaving us wonder if current noisemaker options on the Volt, Leaf, and Prius will meet the need. Regardless, if you want a quiet car you’d better start your financing.

Ward’s 10 Best Engines Includes 2 Electric Motors for 2011

Nissan_Leaf_motor.jpg

For the first time ever, two of the world’s top car engines are electric motors, on the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid and on the all-electric Nissan Leaf. They’re on the 2011 edition of Ward’s 10 Best Engines, awarded annually to the most technically advanced automotive powerplants. As proof of how rapidly car propulsion technology changes: Only two of the engines are carryovers from the 2010 winners, two are heavily modified repeaters, and six are new.

Shenzhen netvertible flips its lid, apes Dell Inspiron Duo with days to spare

If you thought the Inspiron Duo would be the only netvertible to have a slick spinning screen, think again — with less than three months since Dell’s design debuted and ten days till it ships, that trap-door design’s been copied by the gadget giants of Shenzhen. This time around, it’s not an obvious KIRF, but it’s also not a terribly powerful little PC — where Dell at least attempted to push the envelope with a dual-core Atom N550 processor, 2GB of RAM and a Broadcom Crystal HD chip, here we’re looking at a bargain-basement netbook with all the usual suspects (Atom N450, 1GB RAM, 120GB HDD, Intel GMA 3150) and what looks like a tiny optical trackpad. At least it’s got a capacitive screen! No word on when or how much you can expect to pay if flipping bezels are your thing.
