Prius Sells Two Million, Pick-up Trucks Still Much More Popular

Toyota recently announced that it had reached a new milestone, selling more than two million Prius hybrids since the car first launched back in 1997. And the sales number for the Prius have been steadily increasing as well, with the car selling more than 400,000 units in 2009 and already in 2010.

But while these numbers sound great, when put in perspective it’s clear to see just how far hybrid and electric vehicles have to go to achieve mass market penetration. Automotive blog Jalopnik has put together a chart outlining this fact, by showing that over the same period of time, while two million Prius’ were sold worldwide, more than 34 million pick-up trucks were sold in the United States alone. And even with the sales of electric and hybrid vehicles on the rise and those for pick-ups in decline, there’s clearly still a lot of ground to make up.

Interesting news from General Motors today that’s resulted in some puzzled expressions at Engadget HQ. We’ve learned that the Volt, which Chevrolet has been making quite a fuss about calling an “extended range electric vehicle,” is actually just a traditional hybrid with some… potentially misleading marketing behind it. Since the concept stage the company has been saying how the onboard internal combustion engine was just to charge the batteries, that only the electric motors (there are two) are actually connected to the drivetrain. Indeed that’s what we were told in person when we test drove the thing back in March. We’re now learning that is not the case, that the Volt’s gasoline engine can directly provide power to the wheels in concert with the electric motors.

Is that a problem? In terms of efficiency the answer is “apparently not,” as we’re guessing the car would not have been designed this way if it weren’t the most frugal way to go. So, why all the deception? Why insist this isn’t just a hybrid when it apparently is? When the company went looking for a government bailout it was in part awarded one because of the innovation shown in the Volt. Now that we’re learning the Volt is basically just a plug-in hybrid with a bigger than average battery pack (Popular Mechanics is finding 30-odd miles of purely electric range), we’re left wondering: where’s the innovation?

Hitachi-LG unveils 2nd generation hybrid optical drive with flash-based storage to boot

The Hitachi-LG Data Storage joint venture has itself fostered yet another mixed product, combining both an optical disk drive and flash storage into a single form factor. The 2nd generation of its Hybrid Drive uses Micron’s 25nm NAND flash memory in 16GB, 32GB, 64GB capacities (with those figures to rise in later iterations, naturally) and can be united with either DVD or Blu-ray players — perfect for laptops and other portable devices with just one drive to spare. (The one stretched out on display, pictured above, was a 12.7mm slim DVD-RW tray type). Hitachi housed samples of the drive at its CEATEC booth and even showed off a few example products (first generation drive, too). Care to see what could be under the hood of a future purchase? Usually when we cover military gadgets it’s things like super-strong robots or skateboard tanks. But, even the U.S. Army needs practical, sensible transportation (apparently), and heaven forbid it buys some standard car from a standard dealership. Instead in this case it went to Bright Automotive, who whipped up a custom version of its Idea plug-in hybrid van, a 10kWh battery pack offering 30 miles of purely electric driving before spinning the internal combustion engine under the hood. On top of that, the Idea can actually act as a generator, exporting 3.3kW of power continuously at either 110 or 220v. What can’t it do? Well, look cool on a battlefield for one, or intimidate our enemies, for another — nothing a roof-mounted ball turret and a coat of olive drab can’t solve.

Sony A55 / A33 video recording limited by overheating sensor

So this is why the promo video accompanying Sony’s launch of the A55 and A33 was set against a snowy backdrop. It turns out that these oh-so-revolutionary translucent mirror shooters can’t keep their cool for any longer than 11 minutes when recording video at a temperature of 20 degrees Celsius with Image Stabilization turned on. The A55 is even quicker to overheat at 9 minutes, though it’s worth noting that with IS switched off you can obtain the maximum of nearly half an hour of footage — provided the weather doesn’t heat up. Sony blames this on the APS-C-sized sensor within, and it’ true that plenty of DSLRs come with artificial time limits — our D5000 won’t let us get past five minutes however we try to sweet-talk it — but it’s an irksome limitation to consider if you’re thinking of buying either of these Alphas for their otherwise awesome video capabilities.

Startup Plans Pocketable Dual-Screen E-Reader

Just seven months after unveiling the Entourage eDGe, a device that somewhat awkwardly combined an e-reader and a LCD screen, Entourage is gearing up to launch a pocket-sized version.

The original dual-screen eDGe has a 9.7-inch E Ink screen on the left half and a 10-inch touchscreen LCD on the right. That means you could use it as an e-reader, a notepad or as a netbook–or all at the same time. In practice, it wasn’t all it was cracked up to be.

The Pocket Edge will have folding, book-like body with a six-inch black-and-white E Ink screen on one side and a seven-inch color LCD touchscreen. It will still run the Android operating system, says The Digital Reader.

Entourage is planning a 3G edition of the Pocket Edge for Verizon and a separate, Wi-Fi-only model.

The original Entourage eDGe made its debut at the Consumer Electronics Show in January. Then, e-readers and netbooks were two of the hottest consumer electronics products. Entourage tried to combine the two and birth the eDGe. But the Frankensteinish device suffered from some major problems.

For starters, the eDGe was just too big and heavy. The 10-inch screen size meant that it couldn’t easily be whipped out and used to read e-books on the train or browse web pages on the road. The device’s weight, about twice that of the iPad, put a strain on the arms if it was held up for more than 15 minutes.

The eDGe ended up as a device too big to be an e-reader and, without a keyboard, too uncomfortable to be just a netbook.

The Pocket Edge hopes to correct some of those problems. In terms of tech specs, it will have features similar to the bigger version. It will come with a USB port, a micro SD card slot, a  camera and a non-removable battery.

Along with the smaller screen, the changes mean that the Pocket Edge will be lighter, about one pound, compared to the three pounds of the original.

What’s disappointing to hear though is that the Pocket Edge will use the older Vizplex version of the E Ink screen and not the new Pearl E Ink display that’s in the latest Kindle and Sony e-readers. The Pearl has a much better contrast and for e-reader enthusiasts the older technology in the Pocket Edge is likely to be a disappointment.

It’s also indicative of why the eDGe didn’t become a hit the first time around. If the device is mediocre e-reader and a passable netbook, consumers have little incentive to buy a half-baked device that’s doesn’t offer the best of either worlds. Instead, they are better off getting a Kindle or a Nook that does one thing very well and using a netbook or a tablet for their other computing needs.

Entourage hasn’t said how much the Pocket Edge will cost but the device is expected to ship in late October. So far, the word is it will be cheaper than the $500 original model.

Dell Inspiron Duo hybrid netbook / tablet stars in another film

We’ll freely admit how smitten we are with Dell‘s concept, the Inspiron Duo. While it’s supposedly coming to retail by the end of the year, it’s so special that every time we spy new photos or video footage of it, we watch joyfully. Of course, Intel doesn’t need to watch from afar, as demonstrated in a new video — they simply asked Dell’s Inspiron Product Marketer, Dave Zavelson to show it off on film. The Duo, in case you’ve been hiding under a rock since before IDF, is a 10-inch netbook with a swivel screen which enables you to use it as a sort of tablet… you know, those things that everybody’s cranking out these days. It also boasts a dual-core Atom N550 CPU and Windows 7 Home Premium. Regardless, we still haven’t heard any pricing or definite availability info yet, but the video is below.

I know what you’re thinking — how can you combine the awesome power of electrical generation with the subtle charms of your housecat? The Wool Ball hybrid humidifier, designed by a certain Yuan Gu for the Chinese firm Yadu, gets its power from the playful swipes of your pet — or from a wall socket, if your tabby is as lazy as ours. There’s no telling when this one will make it to market, but sometimes gadgets are better in the abstract anyways.

Car Review: Lincoln MKZ Makes Hybrid a $0 Option

The 2011 Lincoln MKZ midsize sedan makes a hybrid drivetrain a no-cost option to go along with the dazzling Sync music and Bluetooth feature. Gas or gas-electric hybrid, it has a $35,180 base price including freight. Technically, the 2011 MKZ adds knockout features to an aging platform. Its uncertain success may hinge on factors unrelated to high-tech, such as whether the Lincoln brand has traction with upscale consumers in the near-luxury segment that Lincoln declares to be in tune with uncertain economic times.

Did you know that Ford‘s first electric car, the Comuta, was released way back in 1967? It was a perfectly goofy looking thing, with a top speed of 37mph and a range of 40 miles — if you didn’t go near that top speed. More of a concept than anything, only a handful were made available for sale, and at this point it certainly looks like the company’s immediate plans for EVs are similarly conservative. DailyTech pulled together an analysis of Ford’s future offerings in the electric and plug-in hybrid space and it’s obvious the Blue Oval is taking its time making sure the EV water is warm before jumping in. First up is the Transit Connect, a 100 mile range electric van intended for fleet use and, with a price well north of $30,000, not expected to sell in droves. Next will be the Focus Electric, due next year and, while this one will be substantially cheaper and more consumer-friendly, Ford execs expect it too will have low demand.

The primary reason for this is that Ford still believes that pure EVs are not ready for mainstream adoption, with battery technology unable to provide reliable power at the range of temperatures people actually want to go somewhere. The Focus Electric mitigates this with both liquid heating and cooling, but for now the company thinks the best mix is a traditional, power-split hybrid, where the gas engine can drive the wheels if the batteries can’t cope. That’s unlike the Chevy Volt, which is only driven by batteries. To this end Ford has a new, mystery plug-in hybrid vehicle coming in 2012. What kind of car? All we know is it’s “not a Focus.” That can mean only one thing: F-350 Super Duty PHEV edition.
