Entourage Edge dual-screen Android e-reader given lusty hands-on (video)

It’s one thing to see the Entourage Edge in a controlled demonstration by a company representative, something else entirely in the capable hands on CNET‘s Ina Fried. Ina got down with a prototype of the Marvell-powered, dual-display, 9.7-inch E Ink and 10-inch LCD hybrid with built-in WiFi. The video walkthrough after the break shows that Android-powered resistive touchscreen browsing the web and launching other apps from the familiar Android desktop. The E Ink display lets you read EPUB and PDF files, as you’d expect, in addition to taking notes and manipulating text with the help of an included stylus. You can also move content between the displays and record audio via a pair of mics (one to record the lecture, one to cancel the noise). Unfortunately, Fried says that the device is still buggy and “definitely has the look and feel of a first-generation product.” Sounds like the company has its work cut out in order to launch as planned in February as a textbook / notebook replacement for “typical highschool students” with $490 to burn. Let’s hope they have more luck with that than Amazon did in its early Princeton pilot. Right.

[Thanks, Henry]

Kepler Motion brings 800bhp using dual-engine hybrid magic

Since we’re already on the topic of fairy dust, how about a new all-wheel drive supercar that can purportedly thrust you from nought to sixty in 2.5 seconds? New startup Kepler Motors is about to unveil its first vehicle and its ambition is nothing short of staggering. Employing a 550bhp Ford Ecoboost petrol engine to drive the rear wheels and a 250bhp electric motor for the front pair, this machine also comes with a carbon fiber chassis and carbon ceramic brakes to really make the theoretical numbers look ridiculous. Of course, it’s still only a concept for the Dubai International Motor Show, but production plans are already set for 2011. You’ll just have to make sure to be among the 50 richest people interested in owning one, because that’ll be the entire production run.

Toyota’s plug-in Prius hybrid goes into testing across the globe, on sale in 2011

Good news, everyone! The target date for Toyota’s Prius plug-in hybrid (PHEV) is slightly less out of reach than the 2012 window we heard prior: according to Autoblog, it’s now set for late 2011 and the price is deemed “affordable.” Back to the present, as a tease to the world at large, the company’s planning to produce and ship just under 600 of the models over the next six months. That breaks down to around 230 for Japan, 200 for Europe, and just 150 for the ‘States. Government agencies, corporations, and universities are the primary recipients, and interestingly, half of those Euro-bound cars are going straight to Strasbourg, France. The only catch is that it looks like the autos will be sticking with its flashy, hyper-blue paint job — not that we mind one bit, but we can see that bugging a few people out.

DesignLine turbine hybrid buses take off in NYC, could multiply soon

Capstone’s CMT-380 has proven that turbines, batteries and an unconditional love for Ma Earth actually can get along within the confines of an automobile, and now it looks as if the same type of technology will be touching a lot more lives in and around New York City. DesignLine, a New Zealand-based company with an “experimental turbine hybrid” of the same name, is currently being used in three buses in Brooklyn and Manhattan, and unlike petrol-powered alternatives, these are said to be as “quiet as a tomb.” They’re also environmentally friendly, omitting internal combustion altogether and relying on spinning turbines to recharge a Li-ion battery that powers the wheels. If the trial goes over well, 87 more of the $559,000 buses could be ushered into operation, and you’ll know one’s coming due to the shocking absence of creaking, sputtering and black haze rounding the bend to your stop.

[Thanks, Yossi]

Digital Drive Top 10: Ford Fusion

FordFusion_COTY_2010.jpg

The one U.S. automaker that didn’t take federal bailout money has the only two American cars to make the Digital Drive Top 10 for 2010. Coincidence? We think not.

The sleeper car in our Top 10 is the Ford Fusion, and we’re particularly fond of the hybrid version. It’s relatively affordable, the hybrid gets great mileage compared to the gasoline version, and the Sync iPod-and-Bluetooth adapter is on virtually every Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury, which is how it should be. The Ford Fusion provides comfortable transportation and outstanding reliability, according to a number of surveys.

Capstone’s CMT-380 hybrid supercar does 150MPH with batteries and a jet engine

Step aside, Tesla — we’ve just spotted the hottest Earth-lovin’ supercar since the Lightning GT. Shown off to wide-mouthed onlookers at the LA Auto Show this month, the Capstone CMT-380 prototype is an automotive beast unlike anything we’ve ever seen. Rather than mixing batteries and a conventional engine, this whip combines the former with a diesel / biodiesel-powered microturbine, which is — for all intents and purposes — a jet engine. Reportedly, the car can reach 60MPH from a standstill in just 3.9 seconds, hit 150MPH before being cut off by the electronic limiter, cruise 80 miles on battery power alone and drive from Idaho Falls to Spokane on just a single tank of fuel. It’s being bruited about that the company is considering flipping this bad boy into the production line, but with an estimated asking price north of $200,000, there’s sufficient evidence to think that the volume here would remain relatively low. Hit up Autoblog Green‘s gallery of shots from the show floor below, but only if you love peering at high-resolution images of stealthy, sexy things.

Honda’s P-NUT concept is big on puns, short on realism

We get it, Honda, you got some of your crack acronymists on the job and hobbled together Personal-Neo Urban Transport (P-NUT) to vaguely describe this new concept car. But the car itself? It’s interesting, we’ll give it that. The primary idea seems to be the single seat in front for the driver, with two rear seats in the leg-room optimized “flanking” positions. There’s also a modular rear engine bay for working with a regular internal combustion engine, hybrid setup or pure electric power, along with a heads up display in the front windshield. It seems fun, and we like all the legroom, but we won’t start building any locomotion dreams upon the thin, salty shell of P-NUT just yet. Video is after the break.

Universal’s BD-59 Blu-ray / DVD flip discs to debut on Bourne trilogy releases

Once upon a time Universal was the hybrid disc king, with plans to release up to 90% of its 2007 HD DVD titles on the dual sided discs, but we know how that ended. Now the company is back to its old tricks, ready to ship the first BD-59 discs with a 50GB Blu-ray / 9GB DVD configuration promising movie and all available special features in whichever format is desired. The expensive answer to a question no one was asking or the perfect way to add future proofing and extended compatibility to new movie purchases? We’ll know more once a price is announced for the Jason Bourne trilogy of movies — seeing their first individual Blu-ray releases — due on January 19.

U.S. Army and EnerDel team up for electric-hybrid Humvee

EnerDel, who we last saw soaking up some of that Joe Biden stimulus money, is teaming up with the U.S. Army to develop a battery solution for a hybrid Humvee. Of course, your High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle is by its nature very large and very heavy — great for dropping out of airplanes, perhaps, but not so great a candidate for electric power. Two of the company’s battery chemistries will tested in the program, including lithium-manganese spinel (for extending electric vehicle range and electronic systems runtime) and lithium-titanate system (for the hard acceleration and braking required). In addition to “extreme performance simulations” that re-create battlefield conditions, a hybrid vehicle can also sport a “stealth” mode, which kills the diesel generator altogether, allowing the vehicle to run silently with a low thermal signature. And if that weren’t enough, the vehicle is also being designed to perform as a highly portable, temporary power plant for field hospitals or command posts. The program is expected to last eighteen months. PR after the break.

Department of Energy lends Fisker $528.7 million for Karma and Project Nina

Well, it seems like that sex-on-wheels advert has done its job. Fisker’s development of the oh so desirable Karma PHEV and its lower-cost sibling, now known as Project Nina (inspired by Christopher Columbus’ escape from the Old World, no less), has been given a significant boost by the US government. Henrik Fisker himself has been quoted as saying that once the conditional loan is in, “it wouldn’t take long to get the lower-cost plug-in hybrid on the road.” If the company carries over the aggressive styling from the luxury model, it might have a real winner on its hands, though — we know — it’s got to be cheap enough first. While waiting for that $528.7 million to work its magic, you can gawk at the solar paneled roof on the Karma, to be found after the break.
