Hasta La Gadget!

While many of us are focused on the future of electric and hybrid vehicles, some are still trying to improve gas-powered combustion engines. And a new discovery could make those engines much more efficient. And it uses lasers.

Laser technology is now at the point where small enough lasers can be designed to fit into a combustion engine, replacing the spark plugs. And not only would the lasers not need to be replaced like spark plugs, but they would also improve the fuel efficiency of the vehicle by creating leaner air/fuel ratios and faster combustion timing. The lasers themselves are just 11 millimeters long.

The team behind the laser ignition system is currently working with both Toyota and an unnamed spark plug company on potential commercial applications.

This year at CES we got our first glimpse of the Toyota Entune infotainment system, and then a week later at the North American International Auto Show we got our first close-up look at the bigger, hatchbackier Prius V. Now, here at the New York International Auto Show, the two pieces have come together into one five-door package. The car and the infotainment suite are slated to hit dealerships this summer and we sat down in one to try out the other. The Dakar is the most grueling race in the world and, while that historic location is no longer the destination, the race itself still serves as the most brutal punishment a car (or bike) can take. If you can cover 5,500 miles across some of the roughest terrain in the world you know you built it right. The Rīga Rally-Raid Team has done just that in the past, and for its next attempt it’ll make things more interesting with a series hybrid powertrain. Its car is called the OSCar eO, an EV with enough batteries to make it between 150 and 300km on a charge. However, most Dakar stages are well longer than that, so the car also carries an on-board generator, a Nissan-sourced engine fueled by a 200 liter fuel tank. That’s 53 gallons worth of the good stuff to keep this thing going over the kind of terrain you can see in the video below, with regenerative dampers helping to add juice as well. Will the whole contraption make it all the way to Dakar Lima? We’re hopeful, but then again we all know how well sand and electronics get along.

Chances are the Secret Service won’t be ditching its signature black SUVs for these things anytime soon, but if all goes according to President Obama’s new energy plan, even the Commander in Chief’s armed guards will be rolling more eco-friendly in the next three years. In a speech given at Georgetown University Wednesday, the President said he expects all government agencies “to purchase 100 percent alternative fuel, hybrid, or electric vehicles by 2015.” Now, that doesn’t mean they’ll have to get rid of pre-existing gas guzzlers, but any new purchases made after the cutoff date will be expected to comply — the government’s current fleet consists of 660,000 vehicles, 400,000 of which run on gasoline. Among other things, the President also called for increased infrastructure for the production of biofuels made from things like wood chips and switchgrass. So no, Cadillac One probably won’t be replaced by a rechargeable egg car, but if Uncle Sam’s taking suggestions, we’d be happy to make a recommendation — Wheego Whip LiFe One does have a nice ring to it. Doesn’t it?

It isn’t quite as hot as the 918 RSR, but it is at least street legal. Or, will be, anyway. It’s the 918 Spyder, one of the hottest hybrids we’ve ever seen, and Porsche has now opened the doors for those who want to order them. $845,000 gets you a car with a mid-mounted V8 putting down “at least” 500HP. That’s paired with two electric motors, one front and one rear, which provide an additional 218 horsepower and AWD handling to boot. Unlike the RSR these motors will be powered by a Li-ion battery pack that will offer 16 miles of purely electric range when charged for about seven hours on a standard 110 outlet. More impressively, this carbon-fiber convertible will get to 60MPH in 3.1 seconds (matching the 911 Turbo S we played with last month) yet deliver 78MPG. That’s not quite up to the levels Volvo’s promising for its V60 plug-in diesel, but we’re thinking this bad boy might be a little more fun to drive. What won’t be fun is the wait: the 918 isn’t expected to start shipping until the end of 2013. That gives you plenty of time to build your dream garage — and practice your pronunciation of “Doppelkupplung.”
