Desk Pets TankBot hands-on (video)

Although we’ve only gotten a glimpse of a TankBot as a render, we were more than interested to see this robot toy doing its thing in the real world. We spotted these tiny desk pals at the International Toy Fair and got to take a look at some working prototypes. As we reported earlier, the TankBots have three functioning modes — autonomous, maze solving and iOS controlled. The bots feature LED eyes and two infrared transmitters — that’s how it solves the mazes. Charging is done by plugging in the USB dongle found on the rear of the tank and you’ll get 15 minutes of battery life after a 30 minute charge. And if you’re wondering how your iOS device will play with the TankBots, a free app will be available to download and each toy will come bundled with an infrared dongle. You can grab TankBots from stores for 20 bucks come June. Head past the break to see some cute, yet impressive maze-solving in action.

iPad Overheating Suit Tossed

apple ipad.jpg

A judge this week dismissed a lawsuit regarding iPad overheating concerns. Jacob Balthazar, Claudia Keller, and John Browning filed the suit last year, claiming that the iPad’s tendency to overheat and shut down in direct sunlight undermined the company’s claims that “reading on iPad is just like reading a book.”

The suit was tossed due to a lack of evidence on the part of the plaintiffs. U.S. District Court Judge Jeremy Fogel wrote in his ruling,
The Court concludes that these allegations are insufficient. At the least, Plaintiffs must identify the particular commercial or advertisement upon which they relied and must describe with the requisite specificity the content of that particular commercial or advertisement.
The plaintiffs now have three days to file an amendment to their original claims.

HTC Flyer vs. Galaxy Tab vs. iPad… fight!

In a world of 10-inch dual-core Androids, HTC has opted to tread its own path by cranking up processor speeds, sticking to a 7-inch form factor and eschewing the latest Honeycomb build for a Gingerbread version it could customize more comprehensively with Sense. All that’s well and good, but sometimes all it comes down to is how these gadgets look and feel. So to help you wrap your mind around the Flyer’s new aluminum body, we present a couple of comparison galleries with it set against two devices that need no introduction. Get clicking!

Man Claims Walmart Sold Him a Fake iPad

LiePad

Ken Lamal walked in to his local Walmart and picked up an iPad he wanted to buy, paid for it, and when he unboxed it, inside he found not an iPad, but a display model – plastic that’s been painted to resemble an iPad for display purposes. When he returned to the Walmart to report the fact that he essentially got a display iPad in a box, Walmart told him they couldn’t refund his money, he should contact Apple, and that all returns are processed through them.
The store says that all returns are processed by Apple and they’re not allowed to repack electronics, so the iPad must have shipped from Apple the way Lamal got it, and that the whole thing is Apple’s problem – not so indirectly implying that Lamal is the one who put the display iPad in the box and is now trying to get cash from the store for it.
Lamal, for his part, bought himself a real iPad at his local Apple Store instead, and the rest is history. He plans to file suit, if only to finally get his money back.

Will Apple’s New Content Subscriptions Punish You? (Updated) [Apple]

Apple is now offering the same subscription service used by The Daily to all publishers. Despite all the predicted gloom and doom for the magazine industry, Apple’s terms seem fair: publishers would be able to keep using whatever subscription methods they want. More »

Apple said to be in talks with Samsung to buy $7.8 billion worth of components

It’s not clear if it’s related to that mysterious $3.9 billion “strategic investment” or not, but it looks like Apple could be about to throw some serious cash in Samsung’s direction. According to a report published in the Korea Economic Daily, Apple is expected to purchase some $7.8 billion worth of components from Samsung this year, including displays, applications processors, and NAND flash chips — all intended for use in iPhones and iPads. As the paper notes, Apple would become Samsung’s single biggest customer if the deal goes through, although the two obviously aren’t strangers to massive deals — Apple has already famously run Samsung’s flash memory supplies dry a few times.

Apple Patent Suggests iPhone Document Scanning

6a0120a5580826970c014e5f1ffa78970c-800wi.jpg

Even if Apple never develops anything with the majority of their patents, the documents themselves are always interesting looks into what the world’s biggest tech company might be up to in the future. On Thursday, the blog Patently Apple showed off documents that suggest the company is looking into embedding scanning technology within its displays. These sensors would have two settings: scanning mode and mouse mode.

Scanning mode would allow the device to read any printed information when placed up against its screen. Instead of using the camera on the back to read printed material, you could just hold the screen against a QR code or page of printed text and the i-whatever would scan it in. Unlike traditional handheld scanners, this patent lets the user selectively fill in the document, scanning in sections without the pain of maintaining a straight line and constant speed.

The patent also includes the ability to check the position of the device using the sensors, letting a face-down iPhone connect to a computer and be used as a mouse. Of course, this implies that there would have to be some way of clicking the mouse, and Patently Apple suggests a multi-touch surface on the rear of the device, in a similar style to Sony’s NGP.

Now, there’s no guarantee of any of these things showing up in the iPad 2 or iPhone 5, but it does provide a unique window into what Apple thinks might be part of the next generation of consumer electronics. And that future looks pretty cool.

iPad gets the Opera Mini treatment, we wonder what took so long

Opera’s been working its Norwegian charms on the iPhone since last Spring, and it’s been flirting with tablets since CES, but up until now the browsers yet to put the moves on the iPad. Considering how much it gets around, we’re surprised it didn’t happen sooner, but Opera announced yesterday that it would show off a new version of Opera Mini on a number of platforms at MWC this year, including Android, iPhone, J2ME, BlackBerry, Symbian, and yes — the iPad. There’s no word on what the iPad version will bring — or when, for that matter — but we’re guessing it will probably sport the same smooth zoom and multiple-page grid we saw previewed on Opera for tablets. For more on the world’s most promiscuous browser, check out the full PR after the jump.
