Apple’s App Store hits 10 billion downloads (update: we have a winner)

Now that the number of App Store downloads to iPhones, iPod touches, and iPads around the world has handily exceeded the population of Planet Earth, we can hopefully put this story to bed until they hit another factor of ten — and as unreasonable as 100 billion downloads sounds, we’ll bet it actually won’t take that long. That’s right: just a few days after kicking off its online counter, Apple’s officially hit the 10 billion mark, which is a whole lot of software any way you slice it. So, Android Market, you’re next?

Update: The lucky winner was Gail Davis of Orpington, Kent, UK, who downloaded Paper Glider. PR after the break.

Gadget Lab Podcast: TDK Boombox, Screwy iPhones

The Gadget Lab crew jams into this week’s podcast with an awesomely loud boombox made by TDK. It’s called the Radio Raheem, and it hooks straight into an iPod or any line-in accessory. You can even use it as a guitar amplifier. What a mean machine.

I show off what’s easily one of the dumbest iPad accessories I’ve ever seen: The Padlette is a weird rubber grip that stretches across your tablet so you can cling it to one hand.

Dylan found something cooler at CES: The Victorinox is a flash drive that’s disguised as a Swiss Army knife. (Surprisingly, Dylan managed to get it past airport security without getting groped.)

I close the podcast with a silly rant about iPhone screws, which Apple recently changed to make it harder to repair by yourself.

iOS 4.3 beta suggests iPad 2 has one megapixel rear camera

“The iPad 2 has a camera.” We know, it feels all but certain at this point (even when it’s far from official), but perhaps we can expand on that quoted assertion further. Like everyone else who can laugh at Objective-C jokes, 9 to 5 Mac has been digging through the latest iOS SDK and found some data referring to K94, which it claims is the codename for the next-generation iPad. (For reference, the original iPad was K48.) Anyway, within that code lies a string reference to “Back Facing 1MP Photo.” Going further, the front-facing camera is reportedly VGA — same as the iPhone, same as the iPod touch. It’s unclear if the also-found “K95” files also included the the same data, or what exactly that codename might be, but if you’re the betting sort, feel free to say, “the iPad 2’s megapixel mullet is 0.3 up front, 1 in the back.” It’s still a gamble until Apple unveils it with a puff of virtual smoke on a presentation slide.

iPad 2 Coming February 9th – Rumor

ipad_2_february_9_rumor.jpg

It certainly feels like the iPad 2 is coming in the next few weeks? In the wake of CES’s massive tablet lovefest, we’ve seen a parade of iPad rumors, all seemingly pointing to the fact that Apple would be unveiling something soon. And besides, Apple’s fairly regular release schedule pointed to a late January event (the first iPad was announced on January 27th of last year).

Here’s another interesting little potential hint. In the second beta of iOS 4.2, a thumbnail seems to actually give away the release date of the new tablet. In the past version, the iOS, the old calendar icon had a big “27” on it–the day in January that the last iPad was released. The new icon, meanwhile, spots a big “9.”

Could Apple be releasing the new iPad on the 9th of February? Seems like a long shot, sure, but in the world of Apple rumors, everything is fair game.

iChair Gives your iPad or iPhone a Boost

iChair.jpg

Looking for a case for your Apple portable? Consider the iChair, a slim case with a built in kickstand. iChairs have a rubber-coated matte finish. Because the kickstands are flush with the case when not in use, they don’t add any extra bulk. The iPad version is lined with microfiber and has two kickstands: one that holds it up high at three different angles, and one that holds it lower, just right for typing.

The case is available in black with your choice of an extra top slider case in either blue or white. All models come with a screen protector, cleaning cloth, and squeegee board for pushing out any bubbles when you apply the screen protector. In fact, the iPhone 4 case comes with front and back screen protectors. The iPad version lists for $49, while the iPhone 4, iPhone 3G/3GS, and iPod Touch versions list for $34. Not convinced? You’ll also get free shipping in the continental U.S.

Desk Pets to roll out iOS-controlled TankBot this June

There’s unfortunately no pictures or video of it in action just yet, but it looks like Desk Pets is getting set to join Parrot and its AR.Drone in the wild world of toys controlled by iOS devices. That comes in the form of the company’s forthcoming TankBot, which can not only be controlled by your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, but by gestures thanks to its built-in IR sensors — it’ll also operate autonomously in its maze navigation or free roaming modes, for good measure. Look for this one to be available in June for “under $20” in your choice of four different colors.

XBMC comes to the iPad

We were politely asked to keep quiet about this until today, but here’s the truth: XBMC now runs on the Apple A4, period. As in, there’s no reason why you can’t install that shiny new Apple TV 2 version of the media center software on your jailbroken iPad or iPhone 4 too. Find instructions at our more coverage link… then give the hackers and developers a cheer.

iOS 4.3 beta multitasking gestures demonstrated on iPhone, look like a handful (video)

iOS 4.3 beta mulitasking gestures demonstrated on iPhone, look like a handful (video)

If you came along for our most recent podcast you heard us discussing some of the new features uncovered in the iOS 4.3 beta, including multitouch gestures for multitasking like four-finger swipes to go between apps. They seem hugely useful on an iPad but, on an iPhone, sounded like a bit of a handful. Now we have some video evidence, with Antoni Nygaard managing to get them working on his iPhone, along with the lock/mute switch toggle as well. Given these multitouch gestures aren’t coming to the iPad (yet) we’re guessing it won’t be hitting the iPhone either, but we can always hope.

Update: BGR has a little more information on this, including some screenshots if the video below isn’t good enough for ya.

[Thanks, Crazyyen]

FaceTime, PhotoBooth and Camera Icons ‘Confirm’ Dual-Camera iPad 2

A screenshot inside the latest iOS 4.3 beta from Apple gives further evidence that there will be both front and rear-facing cameras in the iPad 2. The shot, which is used to preview desktop backgrounds in the Settings app, shows icons for the FaceTime, Camera and PhotoBooth apps. PhotoBooth is currently an OS X-only App for taking and applying filters to photos of yourself.

The image is exactly the same as the current one except for the addition of these new icons, and the movement of the icon for the settings app to the last position in the list. Further, MacRumors has also found evidence of PhotoBooth filters within the beta, including “Thermal Camera, Mirror, X-Ray, Kaleidoscope, Light Tunnel, Squeeze, Twirl and Stretch.”

This would seem to be the clincher for expectations of a dual-camera-equipped iPad 2. It also means that I have just lost all incentive to buy an iPhone 4, now that the next iPad will do everything the iPhone can do, only without the pesky phone-calls.

Apple: New Multitouch Gesture Not for Public Consumption

Those looking forward to the new multi-touch gestures in the forthcoming iOS 4.3 for the iPad are in for a disappointment. In the release notes of the latest version, iOS 4.3 beta 2, Apple has made clear that the four and five-finger gestures that appeared in the first beta are merely for testing purposes. They won’t make it into the final version.

This beta release contains a preview of new multitasking gestures for iPad. You can use four or five fingers to pinch to the Home Screen, swipe up to reveal the multitasking bar, and swipe left or right between apps. This feature will not be enabled in iOS 4.3 for customers, but we are providing this preview to gather input on how these gestures work with your apps

This is a crying shame, as these cool-looking gestures were the one thing I was looking forward to in iOS 4.3. The other new features – streaming video from third party apps to AppleTV and iAd full-screen banners are fine, but they won’t improve everyday iPad usage. Still, the wording makes it sound like we may still get it in a future release.
