CandyShell Card Case Turns iPhone into Wallet

Speck’s CandyShell Card protects your iPhone and stores your credit cards

The iPhone 5 may or may not have a near-field communication chip with which to make cashless payments, but why wait to find out anyway? You can add cashless payments to your iPhone 4 today, with Speck’s new CandyShell Card case. It has no high-tech electronics — just a slot which will carry your credit cards.

The hard case covers everything except the screen, and round back there is a rubberized slot which can hold up to three cards. These slide in through an opening in one edge, and at the other side there is a cut-out that lets you push cards out with your thumb.

It’s simple, and it lets you leave your wallet at home. It will also let you sample that feeling of terrified helplessness you get when you lose not just your phone, but all of your money and ID too. Get used to it. If NFC payments take off, losing you phone will be a whole lot more inconvenient than just losing the ability to make calls. $40.

Get Your 14 Karat Solid Gold iPhone Today

This article was written on May 14, 2007 by CyberNet.

IphonegoldMany people are anticipating the arrival of the iPhone, and we all know that it’s expected to be released mid-June.  But, why plan on getting a normal iPhone when you could get a 14 Karat solid gold iPhone? Where can you get one? eBay of course!

The gold iPhones aren’t the only ones available on eBay, but they’re probably getting the most attention.  The seller has 101 feedback with a 99% positive rating.  While his feedback score is good, there’s really not much to go off of. Especially because his listings are all private, and no one knows what the feedback was for.

He’s got the 4GB model selling for $9,500 on a buy-it- now, and he had the 8GB model selling for $10,000, however it says that this one was sold.  The buyer’s ID has been kept private, but it wouldn’t surprise me if someone created an account for the purpose of buying the phone with no intent to pay.

The items were just listed today because part of eBay’s policies regarding pre-sales are that the seller must guarantee that the item will ship within 30 days from the start of the listing.

I’m having a real hard time believing that this listing is legitimate, but you never know. Why you’d want a solid gold iPhone is beyond me! Maybe because you’d be the only one with it??

The good news for those of you who don’t want to get a solid gold iPhone is that Apple execs are saying that they’re confident that the product will be shipping on time, and that they will be able to meet the initial demand for the phones.

Apple has their goal set high — they’re hoping to sell 10 million units within the first twelve months of sales which would give them 1% of the mobile market.

Keep in mind, Nintendo also said that they were prepared for the demand of the Wii, and look where they stand today. Until the iPhone actually launches, no one will really know if Apple is prepared to meet the demand.

Copenhagen airport tracks your every move using WiFi signals

Hello, Big Brother! According to the New York Times, Copenhagen International Airport is currently testing a new program that monitors passengers based on WiFi data emitted from devices like laptops and smartphones. Airport officials observe travelers from a remote computer, and can tell, within 10 feet of accuracy, where they spend their time — those arriving and departing are represented by different colored dots. The program, created by Geneva-based SITA, also gives visitors the option to download an iPhone app that provides location-based information, like promotions from nearby restaurants. SITA’s VP said the software isn’t intrusive, as it follows devices, not individuals, but we’re not sure we want anyone to know how long our Android spends in the bathroom — and you thought those naughty-bit scanners were creepy.

Gevey SIM provides janky but jailbreak-free unlock for iPhone 4 on iOS 4.3

If you’ve updated your iPhone 4 to iOS 4.2.1 or above, you might be aware that there is currently no unlocking software available for the accompanying basebands. Naturally, we’d imagine the Dev-Team will soon provide a remedy for this lack of freedom, but for now, Gevey has you covered… somewhat. For $70, this imposter SIM promises to unlock, without the need to jailbreak, all the current basebands found embedded within 4.0 – 4.3. In the video after the break, it appears multiple — and frankly, just plain inconvenient — steps are required to get the kit working on your iPhone. What’s more, apparently you’ll need to do all of this again if you switch off the phone. Oh, and we should mention this involves snipping off a corner on your SIM card, and carriers tend not to like that. Our recommendation regarding this contraption? If you’re absolutely in the need of a carrier unlock and have the cash, proceed with caution. Otherwise, patience is your answer.

“Anti-Gay” iPhone App Pulled

iPhone Exodus app.jpg

Apple has apparently responded to the public outcry surrounding Exodus International’s controversial “gay cure” app. The app, which stirred up protest from gay rights groups earlier this month, culminating in a petition signed by nearly 150,000 people, has disappeared from the iPhone App Store.

The app first popped up in mid-February, offering downloaders “freedom from homosexuality through the power of Jesus.” The church also cited medical research as the evidence for the validity of its mission. Dr Gary Remafedi, a researcher behind evidence cited by the church, has since decried the appropriation of his work as “erroneous,” joining the call to pull the app from the store.
Apple came under fire for allowing the app to pass through its oft-strenuous vetting process. Gay rights group Truth Wins Out sent a letter to the company, stating, in part,
Apple has long been a friend of the LGBT community, opposing California’s Proposition 8, removing the anti-gay Manhattan Declaration iPhone app, and earning a 100% score from the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index. I am shocked that this same company has given the green light to an app from a notoriously anti-gay organization like Exodus International that uses scare tactics, misinformation, stereotypes and distortions of LGBT life to recruit clients.
Apple has yet to issue an official comment on the app.

Google brings check-ins to Google Latitude on iPhone, 30 languages to Places

Unsurprisingly, El Goog gifted the Android versions of Latitude and Places with these updates a few weeks back, but now the iOS loyalists are being brought into a similar circle. The search giant has just added check-ins to the iOS version of Google Latitude, with any iDevice using iOS 4 or higher being deemed compatible. In related news, the Applefied build of Google Places is now available in 30 languages, and there’s an added ‘Saved Places’ feature for keeping tabs on your favorite spots. You can check your phone for updates, or if you haven’t dug in yet, have a poke around in the App Store.

T-Mobile Says “No” To The iPhone

iPhone 3GST-Mobile has being bought up by AT&T (pending government approval, of course), but the phone service provider has no plans to offer the iPhone. T-Mobile claims that the brand will stay independent and will not be absorbed by AT&T.

However, you can still expect other high end smartphones to hit the network. T-Mobile also stated that the process will take at least a year for the buyout to be complete, so no near future changes are expected.

Contour launches Viewfinder App, lets your iPhone talk to your ContourGPS (video)

Contour launches Viewfinder App, lets your iPhone talk to your ContourGPS

Helmet cam aficionado? Contour’s ContourGPS currently has the greatest range of connectivity options, and one of those options, Bluetooth, is finally good for something. The company has just flipped the switch and deployed its Viewfinder app that we last saw at CES, which allows iOS devices to pull live video from the camera, even if it’s still stuck to the side of your head and covered in mud. Users can also tweak camera settings in real-time, which is a huge step forward over the previous process that required tethering the cam and booting up some software. However, there is a catch: to use the device you have to install a little card, called a ConnectView, into your camera. This sucker will set you back $29.99, though we’re told the upcoming Android release of the app will be able to do without. Unfortunately, that version won’t be along until an unfortunately vague “Spring,” but the iOS flavor is a free download right now in the App Store.
