Apple iOS 4.3 GM available now to developers

That’s right, kids! The Golden Master version of iOS 4.3 has become available — it’s seeding as we speak. If you do any development on the iPad, iPhone or iPod touch, and you’re ready to get to partake in (or even dev for) all the new AirPlay and Personal Hotspot capabilities (for starters), you know where to go. As for the rest of us, we guess we’ll have to wait until the OS gets its official release on March 11. By the way, there’s no word of an OS update for Apple TV yet. Sorry, kids. That’s what they call “tough love.”

[Thanks, Gregg!]

AT&T to offer mobile hotspot on iPhone 4 starting March 11th, requires usual $45 data plan

Though it was kind of implied during the iPad 2 event yesterday when we learned that the GSM (that is, non-Verizon) version of the iPhone 4 would be getting iOS 4.3 with mobile hotspot capability on March 11th, we’ve doubly confirmed with AT&T today that the carrier will be offering the feature right out of the gate — a departure from the tethering delay of days gone by. Naturally, you’ll need the tethering feature added to your account, a $20 surcharge over the standard 2GB DataPro plan for a grand total of $45 with a 4GB bucket. Makes the extra coin a little easier to swallow over cabled and Bluetooth tethering alone, we suppose.

Jam guitar input for Mac and iOS devices gets your axe into GarageBand

Jam guitar input for Mac and iOS devices gets your axe into GarageBand easy

Hello Cleveland! Or, you know, wherever you are. Are you ready to rock? No? Oh, well, maybe just a little jam session, then? Apogee Electronics (no, not the company that brought you all those Duke Nukem releases back in the day) has announced the new Jam device, which enables a digital connection for electric and bass guitars into iOS 4.2.1 (and greater) devices or into any Core Audio compatible apps on Mac. You can record straight into GarageBand if you like and use the built-in control knob to adjust your levels. That connectivity won’t come for free, naturally, with a $99 MSRP slapped on this one. It’ll start rocking stores in March — plenty enough time to find another new drummer.

TruPrint brings proper printer support to iOS if you brought the jailbreak (video)

TruPrint brings proper printer support to iOS if you brought the jailbreak

AirPrint is great in theory, but in practice your chances of finding a supported printer in the copier room are roughly equivalent to spotting a yellow-eared parrot in the wild. TruPrint boosts those chances dramatically, adding iOS support for “most” printers that are shared on the network. Unfortunately no actual listing of supported models has been provided, but there’s a three day free trial if installed over Cydia so you can try it for yourself — yes, you’ll need to jailbreak first. After that it’s $9.99, which is a bit steep, but if it saves you having to wait in just one line at the airport terminal to print a boarding pass it’s well, well worth it.

Apple’s Digital AV Adapter also works with iPhone 4, fourth-gen iPod touch, and first-gen iPad

In case you’re wondering whether Apple’s forthcoming Digital AV Adapter is worth your $39, you might be pleased to know that said HDMI dongle is also compatible with the latest crop of iOS devices before the iPad 2. This includes the iPhone 4, fourth-generation iPod touch, and even the first-generation iPad. Alas, both movies and slideshows will be capped at 720p output from these older devices, whereas the iPad 2 goes a little further with screen mirroring of up to 1080p — we’re guessing the beastly dual-core A5 chip is what makes the magic happen here, though movie output’s also limited to 720p. And hey, we’re only a few months away from finding out if the next iPhone will also get some 1080p love, so no pressure on buying this dongle just yet.

Apple iOS 4.3 coming March 11 with iPad 2, includes new AirPlay features and FaceTime

https://i0.wp.com/www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/03/20110302-10322071--img4602.jpg

Along with the iPad 2, Apple’s releasing the final version of iOS 4.3, which features the Nitro Javscript engine from Safari on OS X, new iTunes Home Sharing features that let you play content from desktop iTunes over WiFi, and the updated suite of AirPlay features from the betas — including the ability for App Store apps to share audio and video. Apple’s also finalizing the new option that lets you assign the side switch to either rotation lock or mute, and it’s adding Personal Hotspot support. There’s also those rumored iOS versions of Photo Booth and FaceTime for the new cameras. It’ll be a free download for all iPads, the GSM iPhone 4, the iPhone 3GS and the third- and fourth-gen iPod touch when it’s released on March 11. When will it hit the Verizon iPhone 4? We don’t know yet.

Apple Exec Tips Cheap iPhone, Maybe

Thumbnail image for Tim Cook Viphone.jpg

If the rumor mill has taught us anything this week, it’s that we should really be looking past today’s event to whatever Apple has planned next. According to at least one employee, today’s iPad announcement is going to be a bit of a snoozer. But while an iPad 3 announcement is likely still a ways off, we’ll no doubt being seeing some kind of of iPhone announcement at around the halfway mark this year.

In an recent meeting with Bernstein Research, Apple’s COO (and stand-in CEO) Tim Cook let slip a little bit of information that many are jumping on as evidence of that cheap iPhone/iPhone nano we’ve been hearing so much about in the past month.
Toni Sacconaghi, the Bernstein analyst who met with Cook, reported that the exec “appeared to reaffirm the notion that Apple is likely to develop lower priced offerings,” in an attempt to shoot down the notion that Apple products are “just for the rich.”
This, of course, is far from a concession–Apple’s executives are generally pretty good about keeping things under wraps (particularly due to the fact that, until fairly recently, only one of them really did any speaking on behalf of the company). It’s something to think about, at least, as you spend the day refreshing the Apple Store page.

Visualized: if the iPhone had happened in an alternate reality

This collection of devices — from Germany’s SKS Hinkel, and winner of an iF Product Design Award this year — is really a video intercom system. But if you use your imagination, from left to right, it looks like an iPod shuffle, an iPod classic, an iPhone shuffle, and an iPhone classic all developed in some awesome alternate dimension where coiled phone cords are still cool.

Admit it: you miss the click wheel.

iFart (the Company) for Sale on eBay

ifart ebay.jpg

Can you put a price on memories–memories like “Howard the Duck,” “The Bubbler,” and “Jack the Ripper?” How does $1 million sound? That’s the going price of iFart Mobile, the developer behind the eponymous app that set the mobile world on fire–or at least gave it a slow, burning sensation in the seat of its collective pants.

iFart’s owner has apparently put the company up for sale on eBay. There’s currently one bid for $1,000 (reserve not met) on the auction, which ends nine days from now. The app, of course, became one of the iPhone’s best sellers, after launching in December 2008–no doubt to the chagrin of Steve Jobs. iFart rocketed to the top of the sales chart, manging to sell 40,000 downloads in a single day.
The page reads like a shrine to iFart, with video of TV appearances on The Today Show and The Daily Show and photos of celebrities like Demi Moore, David Ducovny, and Helena Bonham Carter, who are all apparently all big fans of the farting app.
So, why would someone sell such an amazing, world changing product? That question is, thankfully, answered in the “Why Am I Selling iFart Mobile” section,

I speak internationally and domestically to Fortune 500
corporations and small businesses alike. As creator of iFart, I have leveraged
this simple novelty app into worldwide fame. The app has been featured in The
New York Times Sunday Magazine, Wired Magazine, Gizmodo, Techcrunch, Mashable, The
Washington Post, CNN/Money and a host of papers, blogs and media outlets around
the globe. However, I am now focusing on my latest agency offering,
IMDirect.com, and it is time to pass the baton to someone who wishes to own
iFart and take it to the next level.

Just imagine. That someone could be you.

Piolo iPhone Stand the Most Minimal Yet

Everything about the Piolo iPhone stand is minimal — including the price

If you liked the minimal MoviePeg iPhone stand, you’re going to love the Piolo, which offers more — or really less — of the same. Hell, even its name is shorter.

Where the MoviePeg was a chunky, rubbery clip-on stand with a satisfying heft, the Piolo is a thin strip of TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) with a notch cut to hold the iPhone. It works in both horizontal and vertical configurations and props up the handset by working as a tiny kickstand.

Wired.com’s very own NYC Bureau Chief Mr. John C. Abell had the MoviePeg for his iPhone 3GS and regarded it as good. The Piolo seems to be the same, only even more pocket friendly, and even has a hole to hook it onto a keychain.

But the very best thing about the Piolo, designed and made in the gruffly charming city of sheffield in England, is its price. The designer, Andrew Bond, has even applied his minimalist creed to the cost, and the Piolo sells for just £4, or $6.50, plus flat rate shipping for just £1.85 ($3). What’s not to like? And how can you not like a man whose bio includes the following: “I like a good cup of tea, bacon sandwiches, sleep, photography, films.”?
