Minimal Studios iPod nano watch kits raise a million dollars on Kickstarter, yes, a million dollars

Minimal Studios iPod nano watch kits raise a million dollars on Kickstarter, yes, a million dollarsWell that didn’t take long. Less than a month after we reported on the TikTok and LunaTik concept iPod nano watches hitting Kickstarter the company behind them, Minimal Studios, has met its goal — and then some. Way then some. The project has clocked in nearly $1,000,000 in funding, helped in large part by a $25 pledge getting you first in line for a $35 MSRP TikTok watch kit, while $50 scored you the metallic LunaTik, which will go for $70. If you missed your chance to pile on the money you can now pre-order officially, with an expected shipment date in January. Again we’re not particularly keen on the whole nano as a watch thing, but obviously ya’ll have your own ideas, and we say more power to you — and to Minimal Studios founder Scott Wilson.

The TimeCommand iPhone Dock Controls Other Gadgets Too

TimeCommand Dock

Some of us have a ton of electronic devices on our nightstand: phones in chargers, alarm clocks, media players, radios, lamps, and more. Imagine what life would be like if one gadget would charge your phone, wake you up in the morning, play music and even turn your light on or off based on a time you specify. That’s what you get with the TimeCommand docking station
Simply dock your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad on the top and use the mobile app to program the alarm, radio stations or playlists you want to wake up to, and if you have a lamp with an incandescent bulb, you can plug the lamp into the plug on the dock to have the TimeCommand turn the lamp on or off when you specify.
You can even tell the dock to slowly raise or lower the brightness for easier waking or sleeping, and it has battery backups so you’ll never miss an alarm. The TimeCommand will set you back $99.95 and is available in Apple retail stores now.

iGrill meat thermometer for iPhone is the expensive, unholy marriage of the meat thermometer and iPhone

OK, we didn’t see this one coming: iGrill is a Bluetooth-enabled meat thermometer. That’s right, this bad boy not only displays the temp of whatever you sink the probe into, it also takes that info and transmits it to your iOS device for remote monitoring. Hell, the app itself even features a kitchen timer, alerts for whatever temp you set it to, and more. Because really, you do everything else with your smartphone, so why not use it to free yourself from the tyranny of the kitchen once and for all? Oh, that’s right — because this thing costs $100. See for yourself by hitting up the source link.

Ridgid Jobsite iPod Radio takes a beating, survives long enough to go on sale (video)

So, you’ve celebrated the landing of yet another construction deal by giving the whole crew their own Motorola Defy (except for Derick, who’s saddled with a lowly i365), but there’s still one problem: on-the-job entertainment. Enter Ridgid’s Jobsite Radio, hailed as the first iPod-toting boombox designed to withstand just about anything. As you can tell, the device itself is encased in a ShockMount layer of protective armor, and we have to stress the “armor” aspect. Users simply flip down the lid in the front, slide their iPod in and then change tracks via on-board external controls or remote control from up to 25 feet away. Oh, and if Joe or Buck just so happens to bring their Zune HD into work, the 3.5mm auxiliary input will ensure that no one is publicly shamed. The unit is powered by a standard 120V or Ridgid 18V battery, and if you’re curious as to just how hardcore this thing is, there’s an enlightening video embedded just after the break. She’s all yours after dropping $149 at the Home Depot.

[Thanks, Thomas]

Speakal’s “Cool iPig” is a Stylish iPhone Dock

Speakal Cool iPig

Speakal is well known for their line of adorable animal-shaped iPhone and iPod Docks, but the company just released a new model that’s a little less cute and a little sleeker. The Speakal Cool iPig comes in white and wears a big black pair of shades over his eyes, as opposed to his pink, more docile iPig cousin.
The Cool iPig works with all iPhone and iPod Touch models, plays while it charges, has a massive subwoofer on the underside, and features motion-sensitive volume and music controls that you can control by moving your hands over his ears or with the included remote control. He also has an auxiliary jack you can use to connect another mp3 or CD player.
The Cool iPig is available for an introductory price of $149.99 retail, and Speakal says if you pre-order now you’ll get one before Christmas.

Available Today: 16GB iPhone & 32 GB iPod Touch

This article was written on February 05, 2008 by CyberNet.

expanded iPhone When everybody was making their predictions of what Apple would announce at Macworld 2008, a 16GB iPhone was usually on the list. Macworld came, and what we got was the MacBook Air, iTunes movie rentals, iPhone Firmware, and Time Capsule, but no 16 GB iPhone was to be found.  It’s been three weeks now and apparently Apple wanted to throw a curve ball by releasing an expanded storage iPhone and an iPod Touch three weeks after Macworld.

Double the storage for the iPhone means that there is now a 16GB model.  If you recall, the original pricing of the 4GB iPhone (which is now discontinued) was $499.  Guess how much the 16 GB model is selling for? You guessed it, $499. Quite the deal, isn’t it? The iPod Touch also got double the storage.  Previously they had an 8GB and a 16 GB model, but now there is a 32GB version which is priced at $499 as well.  That means more songs, photos, and videos for those of you who just can’t get enough space.

Many of you who already own an iPhone or an iPod Touch are breathing a sigh of relief at this point knowing that prices have remained the same for the older models. I don’t think Apple would want to repeat the fiasco they went through back in September when they so abruptly dropped the price of the 8GB iPhone and announced that they were discontinuing the 4GB model all together. The expanded storage models of the iPhone and the iPod Touch are available starting today at the Apple store online, or in Apple and AT&T retail stores.

Apple Patent Reveals iPod Theft Deterrent System

This article was written on July 25, 2007 by CyberNet.

White earbudsiPods are everywhere these days, and one of the easiest ways to determine that someone has an iPod is by looking for the signature white cords. For a thief looking for an iPod, it takes no effort to seek out a potential target. And these targets could be anywhere, a mall, on the bus, or walking down the street. What if there was a built-in anti-theft system on your iPod that would only allow your device to charge one time if the device is being used without authorization, thus deterring theft?

According to Ars, a patent that was recently filed by Apple outlines a method that could be used to prevent unauthorized use. They say, “When the device suspects unauthorized use, the recharging mechanism of the device itself is disabled. Consequently, normal use and enjoyment of the device can be significantly reduced when the recharger is disabled.”
An iPod that can’t be charged is worthless which means thieves would be less-likely to target them.

What defines “authorized” use?

The patent outlines several different “conditions” that the user would define to determine whether use is authorized or not. They include:

  • The device connected to unapproved power supply
  • Device used “outside a determined geographical boundary”
  • Setting a timer for authorization to expire in which case user would have to enter in security code

I’m just wondering how long it would take for someone to come up with a way to get around such a system, because it would have to be possible. What if someone forgot their master security code, or the entire iPod freezes up and they need to reset it? I’m sure there are additional issues that I haven’t thought of, so it’ll be interesting to see how Apple would implement such a feature and if it would really deter theft.

Frontal Concepts’ Infuse iPod nano watch strap wins imaginary design award, our hearts

By now, you’ve decided if you’re going to use Apple’s iPod nano 6G as a watch. We obviously have our own feelings on the matter, but those who can’t be bothered with actual functionality should definitely be looking in the direction of Frontal Concepts. This Australian outfit has just released its first product, and it’s far and away the most sensibly designed iPod nano watch strap to date. Rather than just looping a band through the device’s rear clip, the Infuse strap actually has a simple, one-click locking mechanism to keep your digital timepiece in position. It’s also positioned to allow the audio cord to run upwards along the arm, and it’s built from polycarbonate plastics and silicone — plenty tough to withstand the occasional gym visit. Americans can get their pre-order in today for $24.95 (black, white and brown hues are available), with the first shipments expected to head out in around a fortnight. Time’s ticking, Santa.

Apple Updates Universal Dock with Metal Remote, Power-Brick

Apple has updated its Universal Dock for iPods and iPhones. Now, instead of being a $50 box full of plastic parts, it’s a $60 box of plastic and aluminum.

Gone is the old white remote, the one that was the exact size and shape of the little cookies that come with coffee in certain cheesy hotels, replaced by the hefty new aluminum model that comes with the AppleTV.

The plastic inserts are all still there, with adapters for the iPhones 3G/S and 4, all iPod Touches but for the first one, and the previous-generation Nano (the new touch-screen Nano is too small for a dock, it seems.

There is also one addition which should have been included from the beginning: a USB power adapter so you can charge the device as it plays it’s sweet music (or video, with yet another adapter kit).

Available now. And I have one question: why isn’t there a remote-control dock for the iPad, huh?
