Klipsch Refreshes iGroove SXT Dock Speaker

iGrooveSXT.jpg

Your iPhone’s built in speaker can only do so much. If you really want to get your room rocking, you’re going to need an external speaker system. I like the looks of the newly refreshed Klipsch iGroove SXT. While this speaker was originally released in 2007, the company just refreshed it to make it compatible with new iPhones and iPods.

The new iGroove includes a bi-amplified design, which means each driver is individually amplified–a change meant to remove distortion. The company has also re-tuned the bass ports on the sides to remove any “port noise.”

The iGroove can accept iPod Shuffles and other media players through a rear auxiliary port, and also includes an S-video port for TV connections. One of the more useful features is the rapid recharge circuit, which lets you power-up your dead iPod or iPhone in a hurry.

You can find the iGroove SXT at Best Buy stores or on the Klipsch Web site for $149. The site says it’s currently backordered, however.

Confirmed: Apple to Hold Music Event on Sept. 9; New iPods?

Apple ipod invite.JPGApple has sent invitations to several journalists inviting them to an event in San Francisco on Sept. 9.

The invitation itself seems to confirm the rumors that the press conference will involve new iPods, as the tag line (“It’s only rock and roll, but we like it”) seems to imply nothing else. Remember, this has also been the subject of rumors for weeks now.

Officially, the event kicks off at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater in San Francisco on September 9 at 10:00 AM.

And just like that, Apple’s yearly iPod event is happening. According to an email we’ve just received, it looks like all those rumors we heard turned out to be true. The big A will be holding the proceedings at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater in San Francisco (go figure), and guess what? We’ll be there live.

Just as everyone anticipated, Apple has confirmed a Sept. 9 event taking place at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco. The keynote (hopefully with Steve Jobs as emcee) kicks off at 10 a.m. PDT.

What will be announced? Read our previous story “What to Expect From Apple’s September iPod Event” for our predictions.

It’s here: The official invite for Apple’s September 9 annual iPod event. It kicks off at 10AM Pacific—that’s 1PM Eastern—and we’ll be there bringing it to you live, as always.

What do you think we’re gonna see next Wednesday at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts? iPods with cameras? MMS for iPhone in the US? A time machine that’ll take us back to 2005, like this dancer? (Maybe they’ll be dragging Mick Jagger and Keith Richards through it, judging by the caption. Does that mean no Beatles? Hmm.)

One thing it looks like we won’t see, if the photo is any indication, is a coffin for the iPod classic. Update: Okay, since the headphone jack is on the bottom, indicating it’s an iPod touch, maybe the classic will die after all.

Yoshihiko Satoh’s Wooden iPod speaker bags are definitely re-usable, possibly biodegradeable, totally chic

Yoshihiko Satoh's Wooden iPod speaker bags are definitely re-usable, possibly biodegradeable, totally chic

You can spend a lot of money on a handbag, so why not get one that’s functional? These co-Mobile Speakers designed by Japanese artist Yoshihiko Satoh are not just styled to look like a bag, they are a bag, sporting room for your iPod to serve tunes and maybe a bento box to serve lunch — but admittedly not much else. They’re available in dark wood or maple and will set you back ¥31,500; about $335. Sure, that’s not cheap for a 30 watt speaker dock, but we’ve seen far more expensive purses that are far less tastefully designed.

Altec Lansing Mix iMT800 really wants to be a boombox, isn’t

Gaze upon Altec Lansing’s history of iPod / iPhone docks, and you shall see no hint, not even the subtle off-white coloring of an implication, that the company would go this boombastic with its latest offering. The Mix iMT800 might not quite have the necessary panache to compete with the Lasonic i931, but it still talks a good fight. With a 5.25-inch side-firing subwoofer, it should live up to its boast of “towering volume,” while a pair of useful 3.5mm line inputs will allow you to jack in non-Apple players too. We’ve got a couple more images after the break, including the totally rad remote and mean-looking woofer, and if you like what you see, they’re available now for $299.

SendStation’s latest PocketDock is slightly larger than a penny, has much better audio quality than a dime

SendStation's latest PocketDock is slightly larger than a penny, has much better audio quality than a dime

SendStation has impressed us before with its PocketDock line, back in 2007 releasing a tiny nub to suck audio, video, and even get a USB out from an iPod. The company’s latest, the PocketDock Line Out Mini USB, is far smaller — no bigger than Apple’s own charging plug — yet sports a Mini-USB port for charging and a non-powered 3.5mm line out that enables better quality tunes from your pod when connected to an amplified device. The kit even includes a set of tiny stereo RCA jacks that would like nothing better than to mount the front of your receiver. This latest PocketDock is available right now for $29.95 on the other end of that read link, and we’re told they’ll be showing up in Apple Stores, too.

What to Expect From Apple’s September iPod Event

150714757_d9816ab514_o

Let’s be frank: We all know Apple’s hosting a September event, as it has for the past several years. But this year’s keynote is shaping up to be a bit more interesting than usual, thanks to the frenzy of iPod, iTunes and tablet rumors. Plus, of course, the return of Steve Jobs.

True to form, Apple hasn’t confirmed a thing — not even the existence of an event on Sept. 9 — leaving us to assess the rumors based on the best evidence we can find.

Of all the predictions, which are likely to come true? Let’s take a hard look at everything you can realistically expect from this event, which will reportedly take place Sept. 9 at San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center.

New iPods With Cameras, Microphones

Apple’s September events have traditionally revolved around iPods and iTunes, so it’s obvious this will be the theme of the event. But what, exactly, about the iPod? There’s a pile of evidence suggesting Apple will release new iPod Touch and iPod Nanos with cameras.

Wired.com in July received an inside tip from a well-connected source claiming Apple would soon add a camera and a microphone to the iPod Touch, which would bring it closer in line with the iPhone. Additionally, several other publications reported similar rumors about the Touch and the Nano getting cameras. And the latest iPod-related rumor comes from Taiwanese publication DigiTimes, which claims that not only will the Nano and Touch receive cameras, the iPod Classic will, too.

We’re confident the Nano and Touch will be upgraded with cameras (and, of course, increased storage). Cult of Mac’s Leander Kahney had us convinced when he published a gallery of third-party Touch and Nano cases, which feature holes presumably meant for cameras. (See photo above)

However, we’re doubting the iPod Classic will gain a camera. It’s unlikely Apple would want to invest much more in this product, because its sales have shrunk considerably, thanks to the success of the iPhone. Last quarter, the iPod accounted for 18 percent of Apple’s overall revenue, compared to 55.5 percent in 2006. Also, the iPod Classic is the only hard-drive-based iPod remaining in the iPod family, and flash-memory prices are plummeting. Would a camera really boost this device’s appeal and make it worth the investment? We don’t think so.

One more thing: Because the iPod Touch is basically a phoneless iPhone that many use as a gaming device, the next logical step would be for the iPod Touch to get a performance boost to bring it up to speed with the new iPhone 3GS. We’re so confident in this prediction that we’re willing to bet a Chevy Chevelle on it.

iTunes 9

itunes-9-facebook1The current version of iTunes, iTunes 8, is nearing its one-year anniversary, and an update to version 9 is likely. The Boy Genius Report published a rumor report claiming iTunes 9 would sport new visual organization features to arrange iPhone apps. The blog also received screenshots (see right) purporting to reveal iTunes 9 would feature Facebook integration to share playlists with friends using the social-networking site.

A visual-organization tool would definitely make sense — it would mimic the ability to move around the iPhone’s icons on its springboard. We find Facebook integration probable as well. The latest versions of QuickTime, iPhoto and iMovie each have features that enable sharing media with social networks (i.e., YouTube and Flickr). And in general, an automatic playlist creator integrated in Facebook just sounds like a pretty clever idea.

More foggy is a rumor reported by Financial Times that Apple is working with four major record labels to boost music sales by reinventing digital album art. The collaborative effort is codenamed Project Cocktail, and the idea is to entice music fans with a compelling digital package that will get them to gather around notebooks to listen to music together. How exactly would album art do that? It’s unclear. However, Financial Times is a credible publication with solid music sources. Expect this part of the keynote to deliver the biggest surprise.

No Apple Tablet

Though the release of an Apple touchscreen tablet now seems inevitable, it’s unlikely this will be announced in September. Some publications cite anonymous sources saying an Apple tablet will be announced this fall, while others claim it will launch early 2010. We’re betting early 2010 is more realistic.

That’s because Apple is no longer participating in the Macworld Expo trade show to launch new products, and the company would be wise to save its biggest news to compete with other companies announcing new products at the Consumer Electronics Show in January. Why fire all the ammo in September?

Apple’s rumored tablet, which has been described by tipsters as a larger-screen iPod, is shaping up to be the most anticipated gadget since the iPhone. It could make 2010 a very exciting year. We’ve speculated it will be the “year of the tablet,” citing sources claiming Dell, Intel, HTC and other tech companies are preparing tablets to compete with Apple.

The Return of Steve Jobs

We all miss Steve Jobs, even though his employees might not. Nobody can deliver a keynote quite like ol’ Steve. CNBC’s Jim Goldman said on Twitter that Jobs is “very likely” to appear at the Apple event. That’s good news, and if true, his return would make this a very momentous event.

Excited? We are, too, and we’ll keep you plugged in. Keep reading Gadget Lab, or follow @gadgetlab and @bxchen for updates on the upcoming event.

September 9 iPod event gets some corroboration from AppleInsider, still no word from Apple

There wasn’t much reason to doubt that September 9 date we’d been hearing for Apple’s annual fall iPod event, but now AppleInsider is saying it can independently confirm the date. Sure, it’s just a rumor backing up another rumor, but it’s more than Apple has to say on the topic so far. Meanwhile, AppleInsider also is backing up word that there won’t be a tablet at the event, that an iTunes “social networking” feature of some sort is in the cards, and that the iPods are getting cameras. Not a lot of controversy to be found here, but perhaps a modicum of assurance for folks desperately trying to pin down their iPod events schedule for the next couple of weeks.
