MetroPCS may be top contender for AT&T’s post-acquisition assets

The likelihood of a successful acquisition of T-Mobile by AT&T may largely depend on what the latter is willing to give up. The largest GSM carrier in the US may need to throw a few assets overboard in order to satisfy the Department of Justice, and has reportedly been Rethinking Possible by engaging in discussions with several parties interested in scooping up the leftovers. According to Bloomberg, MetroPCS appears to be the frontrunner in the talks, and plans to meet with the Justice Department (alongside AT&T, of course) in the next two weeks to determine if the strategy will appease the regulating body. No guarantees here, of course: it seems like a lot of assets would have to change hands for MetroPCS — a regional carrier with roughly nine million subscribers — to be considered a large enough competitor to assuage the government’s concerns here. We can’t imagine the Feds would be satisfied with any small offering, considering the Department’s filed a lawsuit against Ma Bell to block the merger. We have a feeling this saga is just starting to get real interesting, so stay tuned.

Google spills the beans on Gmail revamp a bit early (video)

You’ve already gotten peek at it… heck, if you’re anything like us you’ve already been using the preview version of it. What are we talking about? Why the newly redesigned Gmail, of course. In late June Google started offering a vision of your web app future. It was a bit sparser, a bit more monochromatic and (dare we say) a bit more finger friendly. Well, it seems like the interface is about to become a lot less optional. A video was accidentally posted to YouTube today by Google (since pulled), offering a tour of the revamped email service. Most of it will probably look a bit familiar, but the Mountain View crew still has a few tricks left up its sleeve. For instance conversation views now more closely resemble IMs (with profile pictures) and the advanced search options are more easily accessible and prominently displayed. The themes are also getting updated with higher resolution wallpapers to better match the spartan UI. Not that you need any encouragement, but you should definitely check out the video after the break.

HTC Rezound render resoundingly revealed

Hark! The first renders of the HTC Rezound have appeared online, thanks to some of the device’s cases going up for pre-order. You can see that, like the Sensation XE, the phone has red-glowing soft keys — a bit of a departure from HTC’s traditionally conservative design language. If you recall, the phone formerly called Vigor is said to have a 4.3-inch screen, a dual-core 1.5GHz processor, 1GB RAM, Beats Audio and an 8MP rear camera. Now that you know what the Verizon 4G cellular telephone will look like, you’ll be able to pick one out of a lineup when it’s available, which should be on November 10th for $300 on contract.

Nokia Sabre brandished ahead of launch, expected to unveil its Mango of steel next week?

Andy Lees mentioned at AsiaD that Nokia would be launching more than one Windows Phone at its London-based event next week, and there’s a chance that the prototype you see above could be unveiled alongside the Nokia 800 Sea Ray. Pocketnow is referring to the Mr. Blurrycam-produced image as the Sabre, said to be running on a 1.4GHz single-core CPU, 1GB of RAM, a 3.5-inch WVGA display and a 5MP rear camera. The alleged price won’t stab your wallet, as the source claims it’ll cost somewhere between $410 and $480. Of course, there’s less than a week before Nokia World begins and the speculation ends, and we’ll be there to deliver the blow-by-blow action as it happens.

Update: Commenters have made the connection between this mysterious device and the recently-announced Nokia 603, a Symbian Belle handset, with the hardware buttons simply whited out at the bottom. And we’re definitely seeing the resemblance — in fact, if you look closely enough at the Metro UI it appears slightly crooked, as if the stack of tiles is leaning to the right. We’d say the chances of this image being a fake are quite high.

Nokia 800 press shots leak, Espoo’s Windows Phone Mango lovechild now close at hand

Stephen Elop famously fumbled when shots of Nokia’s “super confidential” Mango handset made their way to the interwebs. Since then, we’ve seen footage from the factory floor, and even teases of upcoming marketing materials outing the 800, or the phone formerly known as Sea Ray. Now, leaked press shots over on PocketNow, once again, treat us to a preview of the Espoo / Redmond mobile marriage and its candybar-shaped offspring — available in blue, pink and black. From what we can see in these renders, the volume rocker, power button and apparent dedicated camera shortcut key are all placed on the right side of the handset, with a speaker grille located at the device’s base. Of course, there’s that familiar Windows Phone 7.5 live-tiled interface and three capacitive buttons on the handset’s screen. For now, that’s all she wrote, but is it enough to tide you over ’til its eventual reveal at Nokia World? Our trusty magic 8-balls says, “You may rely on it.” We’re inclined to agree.

T-Mobile internal doc leaks, BlackBerry Torch 9810 to bow this November?

A surprise Ice Cream Sandwich handset this is not — for that news, you’ll have to wait until later tonight. No, RIM’s portrait QWERTY slider may not be the freshest bit of kit in the smartphone arena, but for those dedicated CrackBerry few on T-Mobile, it’s 14.4Mbps speeds just might be enough. A leaked screenshot over on TmoNews shows the Torch 9810, currently available on AT&T, alongside a list of its well-known specs. Apart from the addition of WiFi calling and the new Magenta digs, not much here has changed. The capacitive touchscreen still measures in at 3.2-inches, and RIM hasn’t bumped the quality of its 5 megapixel rear camera nor the phone’s 8GB of storage. While this internal pic doesn’t tip us off to an upcoming release window, we’re pretty sure this is the same 4G “Dumoine” handset from that leaked fall roadmap, indicating a potential November 9th launch. So, will this tide you over until RIM gets BBX out into the wireless wild or are you in the market for something a little sharper?

Samsung Galaxy Nexus leaks on official site, flashes Verizon affiliation

Guess what just showed up in searches on Samsung.com? That’s right, the Galaxy Nexus. The official product page isn’t live so there’s not much to see beyond front, back, and side shots of the device. Wondering what happened to that Nexus Prime branding? Several readers have let us know searching for that also pulls up the same result on Samsung’s suddenly leaky homepage. We’ve gotten familiar with the soft keys and rainbow background after many leaks, so check your local Verizon coverage map and come back here ’round 10PM ET for a big bite of Google’s Ice Cream Sandwich.

Galaxy Nexus images, specs and benchmarks apparently leaked

Either these posters are extremely elaborate fakes, or NTT DoCoMo is really bad at keeping secrets. Just hours after it prematurely tweeted a November release for the Galaxy Nexus (aka the Nexus Prime), we now have what appears to be a full spec list and comparison with the other handsets in the Japanese carrier’s range. The details are nearly all familiar from previous suspected leaks, including the dual-core 1.2GHz Texas Instruments processor, 720p Super AMOLED curved glass display, five megapixel camera with 1080p video recording and 32GB of storage (plus 1GB RAM). Now, it’s entirely possible that the fakers are all singing from the same dodgy hymn sheet — but if that’s true, then they’ve also been busily submitting forged benchmarks to GLBenchmark, which displays results from a ‘Galaxy Nexus’ that include the same 1.2GHz clock speed and HD screen (albeit listed as 1196×720, supposedly due to the onscreen buttons). We’ll know the truth soon enough — the full fandango is but hours away.

Motorola Droid RAZR gets an early introduction ahead of tomorrow’s launch

One thing we love about teasers: they oftentimes backfire, allowing the general public to see more of the product than the company intended. This is the story of the Motorola Spyder (aka Droid RAZR), its first teaser attempt spoiled when the phone’s name was included on the image file. The second sneak peek is cleverly designed as an incomplete puzzle with the missing pieces added one-by-one as we get closer to the device’s launch, but Motorola left a full image of the phone hiding in plain view. So what we see above is an uber-thin Verizon LTE device with kevlar backing and a Droid X-style hump on the top, a rear camera (presumably 8MP) with 1080p HD video capture, a front-facing cam, a standard set of four capacitive touch buttons and a redesigned Droid eye. We’re still hoping to get a glimpse of the Xoom 2 before the big event, but at least you can consider us sufficiently teased for now.

New PS3 and PS Move bundles leaked by box manufacturer, Black Friday deal evidently in tow (update)

There may be a healthy selection of new PlayStation kits coming your way in the near future. Images of unannounced bundle boxes have surfaced over at Slickdeals, courtesy of Scream777, who claims to work at a package production facility that makes ’em. Those include a previously unknown Mayhem Edition PS Move kit with a Sharpshooter peripheral and the newest Resistance and Killzone titles, while a Complete Entertainment Bundle packs a 160GB PS3 Slim with a free month of PlayStation Plus and the latest Little Big Planet and Ratchet and Clank. Gaming blog Gimme Gimme Games claims that the CEB will be $250, with Scream777 noting that its order invoice lists it as a Black Friday special. Adding credence to the leak, said poster also threw in box shots of the 320GB Uncharted 3 bundle and Goldeneye 007: Reloaded Sharpshooter set — both of which are currently available for pre-order. Here’s to hoping it all proves true, but in the meantime, you’ll find more details in the links below.

Update: We’ve received a few comments noting the typo of “stereoscopic” on the box. While all of the pictures in the source do seem like they could be valid (as we mentioned, the latter two can currently be pre-ordered), it’s certainly worth raising an eyebrow to.
