Hasta La Gadget!

You had to know something interesting would come out of the quarter million diplomatic cables that WikiLeaks just, well, leaked late on Sunday, and the New York Times has picked out a doozie for us. As it turns out, that big brouhaha in China surrounding the hacking of Gmail accounts was actually a state-authorized attack. Such was the report from a Chinese informant working for the US embassy, and the disclosure goes on to say that it was part of a “coordinated campaign of computer sabotage,” reaching a wide net of targets, including American government machines, American private businesses, and… the Dalai Lama. Hey, China’s hardly the first country to ever engage in state-sponsored cyber espionage (ahem, Stuxnet), but we can’t say we’re not disappointed. Let’s keep it classy from here on out, alright guys?

Firstly, let’s be absolutely clear that we don’t know this is Nokia’s X7, but given the polished, entertainment-centric design (it has four speakers, apparently), we’re inclined to believe that it’s the real deal. Its screen looks to be the same 4-inch affair as on Nokia’s E7, it’s running the latest Symbian OS (formerly known as Symbian^3), and pictures of its rear reveal an 8 megapixel camera. The last detail of import, naturally, is the reassurance that comes from knowing that this supposed X7 can crunch through Need for Speed quite nicely. Jump past the break to see it on video.

Update 2: Thanks to the lightning-fast gang at Mobile Bulgaria, we’ve got a new copy of the video up past the break. We’ve also spotted that this handset has four homescreens rather than the three available on currently released Symbian handsets. A newer version of the software? Might well be.

That fine bastion of cellular modding prowess known as XDA-developers received some particularly savory snaps this fine Thanksgiving morn — spy shots of Samsung’s elusive Nexus S running an operating system that looks uncannily like Gingerbread, which it calls “Android version 2.3,” and sporting a new back cover that would look perfectly normal on the original Samsung Galaxy S, if not for the extra curves. XDA’s source also claims it has a 720p video camera, though other specs are still a little shaky. To be clear, this is most definitely the phone that Eric Schmidt showed us at the Web 2.0 Summit, though the rear cover looks much further along — assuming Samsung hasn’t scrapped it for a dual-core version, we wouldn’t be surprised if we saw it again in person quite soon. Hit up our source link for some shots of a green-and-black operating system running on that AMOLED screen.

We know that Samsung’s upcoming Gingerbread-powered Nexus S is curved in a pretty unusual way, and a new photo on Picasa — on one of the same photostreams where we’ve seen “Nexus S” and “GT-i9020” in the EXIF data before — gives us a new glimpse of the phone at a three-quarter view where we can really see just how curved it is. It’s still unclear to us whether the display is involved in the curving or if it’s restricted to the bezel above and below the actual screen, but either way, it’s a distinctive design element that’s sure to attract a lot of attention. Interestingly, the picture was captured on a Google employee’s stream just this weekend, suggesting devices are definitely still out in the field — so let’s hope it launches right alongside Android 2.3 in the next few weeks.

No surprise here, but it looks like Verizon’s on-sale-but-never-really-announced Droid 2 Global has its GSM radios locked down, meaning you can’t just throw an AT&T SIM in there and expect anything to work. Of course, the enterprising hackers at xda-developers are hot on the case, so there’s a chance things will be opened up, but we wouldn’t hold our breath.

In other news, it looks like there’s been a slight case modification to the Droid 2 Global — the camera module now sports a slight hump as seen in the comparison photo above. We’re not sure if this is to accommodate the extra radio or (please please please) perhaps a better sensor, but whoomp, there it is. No big thing in the grand scheme of things, but between the dark blue casing and the camera bulge, you’ll totally be able to spot D2G owners out of the crowd. And that… that will make you a super nerd weirdo. But it’s okay, because we love you.
