It ain’t the first Eee PC we’ve seen with a carbon fiber finish, and if the second one in as many months is any indication, we get the feeling we could see quite a few more of these surface at Computex in just a few weeks. The latest netbook from ASUS has found itself plastered on a German e-tailer’s website, with the R101 proudly boasting a 1.66GHz Atom N450 processor, 250GB hard drive, a 10.1-inch LCD, native 1,024 x 600 resolution, Intel’s GMA 3150 graphics and a battery that’s good for 9.5 hours (if you use it sparingly, we’re sure). The only other nugget we’re made aware of is the €299 ($379) price tag, but it’s pretty obvious we won’t be treated to a chiclet keyboard and a trackpad bar with a split in the middle. Fiddlesticks.

It looks like Sony’s having a field day right now in Japan, making its official reveal of the NEX3 and NEX5 cameras, the “ultra-compact” DSLRs with interchangeable lenses we saw back at PMA. The presentation is going on as we speak, and the rumor sites seem to suggest Digital Photography School posted (and subsequently pulled) a review of the NEX3. Quesabesde, however, still has its preview of the not-quite-Micro Four Thirds shooters live, and is also listing some specs and prices. First with the technical details: the NEX3 has a 14.2 megapixel sensor, support for Memory Stick and SDXC media, 720p / 30fps video, and an articulating 2.95-inch LCD. The NEX5 boasts AVCHD 1080i video, and we’re not sure yet as to other differences between the pair. As for pricing, the bodies on their lonesome appear to be worth about €250 and €350, respectively — that’s $320 and $448 in US currency. Throw in a 16mm f2.8 lens for €250 and you’re now looking at a minimum of €500 (or $640) to join the fray. The kits are said to be going on sale in June. Sony’s official site hasn’t updated yet, but with any luck we’ll get the legit scoop in very short time.

Update: Sony made it official, says a firmware update will be released this summer to capture stereoscopic 3D sweep panoramas.

It looks like Nokia isn’t too happy that its big N8 / Symbian^3 reveal this morning was tarnished by Eldar Murtazin’s harsh preview of the device and OS a few days ago: in a new Conversations blog post, the company says that Eldar’s “salacious headlines” masked the fact that he was looking at a “very early, pre-production prototype with dated software that is not yet ready,” and that it only ships products that are “refined, tested, re-tested, evaluated, [and] tested again.” Now, Eldar says the devices he examined had the very latest hardware and software, so it’s a bit of a he-said-she-said at this point, but there’s no denying that Nokia’s definitely shipped some not-quite-ready-for-prime-time devices lately — the N900 and Maemo 5 shipped in pretty roughed-out form, and the company itself has said the N97 was a “tremendous disappointment.” How that recent history reflects on Symbian^3 and the N8 remains to be seen, but it’s clear that Nokia’s feeling pretty defensive about things; Eldar’s been scooping Espoo’s gear for years now and the company’s never made a peep about it. Either that, or someone at Nokia is just trying to cash in on all this iPhone 4 drama by saying things like “we want our prototype back” and “we are not the Secret Police, and we want to maintain our culture of openness,” but come on — that would be a pretty crass publicity stunt, right? We want to believe.

Ah, leaked company presentation slides, they have a clarity only Mr. Blurrycam would despise. EETimes got a batch of them from Samsung dated November 2009 making the rounds, but more important than revealing its equal love for both Roman and Greek mythology, we get a glimpse at its then-planned ARM chip roadmap (yeah, another one) through 2013. In a nutshell, for the Cortex A9 crowd we’ve got the 800MHz dual core “Orion” due for mass production in Q1 2011, a 1GHz single core “Pegasus” for Q4 2011, a 1GHz dual core “Hercules” for Q1 2012, and for sometime in 2012 / 2013, a 1.2GHz dual core “Draco” and quad core “Aquila.” Fear not, Cortex A5 fanatics, you’ve got gifts as well, in the form of 600MHz single core “Mercury” and dual core “Venus” chips, slated for 2010 / 2011 and 2012 / 2013, respectively. We don’t expect the nomenclature to extend beyond internal usage, but frankly, who cares — it’s the devices that count, and unfortunately all we can do is doodle our future gadget hopes and dreams onto scraps of paper while we wait.
