Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet review

When Lenovo announced a pair of Android tablets this summer, we didn’t even pretend it was the IdeaPad K1 we were most jazzed about. Sure, it was exciting to see Lenovo enter the Android tablet market on any terms, but it was the ThinkPad Tablet that set our curious minds rolling. There was the design, for one — an obvious homage to those black, red-nubbed laptops with the same name. It has personality, one that’s inextricably tied to Lenovo’s laptop know-how. It offers a full-sized USB port, an SD slot, 1080p output, a 3G SIM and a slew of accessories that includes a dock, pen and keyboard folio case. It’s the kind of tablet we don’t review all that often: one that might actually make for some painless productivity on the road.

As you can imagine, we’ve been waiting months to learn more, and if your tweets, comments and emails are any indication, so have you. Well, wait no more, friends. We’ve been spending almost a week with one and have oh-so much to say. So what are you waiting for? Meet us past the break, won’t you?

Lenovo BT820 wireless speaker triggers impromptu rave at the FCC

At first glance this looks like your average, dime a dozen, AA-powered portable speaker. But then you realize the unannounced device is at the FCC because it’s wireless — Bluetooth in this instance. Next, you notice the chunky eight-inch midriff and the large (but still cheap-looking) stereo drivers and you finally acknowledge that this thing might actually beat the puny speakers in your brand new Lenovo Ultrabook. Still, it’s not nearly as surprising as a music-playing lightbulb.

Ex-Acer CEO Gianfranco Lanci joins Lenovo as a consultant

We haven’t heard much from outspoken former Acer CEO Gianfranco Lanci since he left the company back in March of this year, but it looks like he’s now ready to get back into the PC business in a slightly different role. Lenovo confirmed today that Lanci is joining the company as a consultant to “help develop and accelerate Lenovo’s worldwide consumer business.” Initially, those efforts will be mostly focused on Lenovo’s integration of German PC manufacturer Medion, which it acquired in June for $907 million, but it sounds like this is more than just a short-term gig — he does get to stay in Italy, though. Windows 8 can run on an Atom CPU, 1GB of RAM

Curious what the minimum specifications for Windows 8 will be? As are we. Microsoft’s remaining mum on specifics, but the outfit’s Steven Sinofsky — President of Windows and Windows Live — just confessed during the opening Build 2011 keynote that an antediluvian Lenovo S10 was potent enough to run Windows 8. And in fact, it’ll do so with more poise than with Windows 7. A brief demonstration explained that Win8 demanded fewer system resources (barely, but still) than Win7 on the same hardware, proving that an early-gen Atom CPU and 1GB of RAM is “enough” to run the outfit’s upcoming operating system. We highly doubt it’s enjoyable, but at least you (probably) won’t be forced into an upgrade if you don’t want to be. Have a gander at the actual numbers just after the break!

Lenovo Debuts Low-Cost Tablet and Skinny Laptops

Lenovo announced their newest tablet, the IdeaPad A1, which will undercut the competition with a starting price of $200.

The A1 tablet will run Android version 2.3 (Gingerbread), feature both front and back-facing cameras, Wi-Fi connectivity and all of the typical tablet accoutrements. Unique to Lenovo, the tablet will feature offline GPS, which connects directly to a satellite feed rather than through the wireless network. Like Lenovo’s other tablets, the A1 supports apps from both the Lenovo app market, and the Android store.

The A1 follows alongside three other tablets just released by Lenovo, which we reviewed last month.

For those who miss the comfort of a keyboard and a Microsoft OS, Lenovo is also releasing its U Series of laptops, including the U300s which comes in an ultra-slim, MacBook Air-like profile. The IdeaPad  U300s has a solid-state hard drive, and weighs in at .01 kg. less than the 13″ Air. A keyboard-centered fan ensures cooling despite the frame’s vent-less base.

Of course, if you favor computing brawn over slimness and portability, Lenovo’s U300 and 400 models are also available.

Lenovo’s just announced the IdeaPad Tablet A1, a 7-inch Android unit that we got a sneaky first glimpse of back in July. Now it’s real, and it’s cheap, it’s running Gingerbread, and while it doesn’t hold a candle to the Galaxy Tab 7.7, it honestly feels like something far above its price point. Read on for our impressions.

The unchallenged reign of the MacBook Air on the thin-and-light domain is nearing an end — the Ultrabooks are coming, and the Lenovo U300s looks to be one of the strongest competitors we’ve yet seen. It’s a new entry to the IdeaPad lineup, the thinnest and lightest of a redesigned and reborn U Series that will also include the slightly stockier 13.3-inch U300 and the even bigger but even more serious 14-inch U400. All three are shipping in October, and we recently got a chance to try out the tiny trio. Read on for full details and our full impressions.

Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet vs. Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1… fight!

We’ve seen it before, but not against one of its chief rivals: the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. Now here they are, sharing a little table space — but not getting along too well. On one hand the Tab 10.1 is thin and light on its feet. On the other, the ThinkPad Tablet is large and would very much like to be in charge of your corporate lifestyle. Due to Honeycomb’s limited customizations, Lenovo’s tackling this angle thanks in large part to some enterprise- and stylus-friendly software, much of which the device comes with pre-installed. DJ Sound Control computer mod redefines luggable

Few would look at Lenovo’s decidedly ordinary A700 all-in-one desktop and think: DJ rig, but then you wouldn’t be PC modder Chris Blarsky (of the Hulk PC mod fame). After four months of work, he’s managed to transform the 23-inch system into the so-called DJ Sound Control rig you see above, which comes complete with sliding drawer to accommodate a keyboard or other DJ gear in case the slew of built-in options aren’t enough for you, not to mention a separate I/O box that also doubles as a power supply (also of the luggable variety).
