Elpida and Spansion move from ‘it’s complicated’ to ‘engaged,’ look to conquer NAND universe

The more the merrier, right? Cutesy sayings aside, the world is gearing up to say “hello” to yet another player in the NAND flash memory market, as Japan’s own Elpida Memory (which currently specializes in DRAM) will be joining the fray in the coming months. Said outfit stated this week that it has entered into an alliance with Spansion (the former flash memory joint venture between Fujitsu and AMD), with Spansion licensing its NAND flash intellectual property to Elpida as part of the deal. If all goes to plan, Elpida will begin producing flash chips at its western Japan plant “as early as next year,” with some of the output being funneled directly to Spansion. ‘Course, with the explosion in smartphone popularity, it’s not shocking to see a DRAM stalwart looking for ways to dip its toes in that high-demand NAND stuff, and as consumers, you certainly won’t find us kvetching about the competition.

Dell ships Precision M6500 laptop with 32GB of RAM: drill, baby, drill

Nah, that’s not us yelling to dig deeper into oceanic unknowns — it’s a megaphone originating from Dell’s campus in Round Rock. As the story goes, Dell’s “oil and gas” consumers have been clamoring for more system memory on their mobile workstations, with the revamped Precision M6500 — which allows them to “review larger slices of the earth to find oil, enabling faster and more accurate drilling to find oil and gas reserves.” We say all that to mention the 32GB of system RAM that’s now shipping on fully loaded M6500s, but with four RAM slots, that’s not as difficult to accomplish as you might expect. Still, having 32GB in a single laptop is a rare sight these days, and if you aren’t into coughing up a fistful of Benjamins for that, Dell’s Precision M4500 is now available with 16GB of memory. You know, for running Maya with less lag… or something.

iPhone 4 Has More RAM Than iPad

The iPhone 4 is an even bigger upgrade than you thought.

When Steve Jobs introduces new iPhones, he skips talking about memory capacity and processor speeds: The idea is that this is an automatic computer that just works. But you’d think he would’ve at least bragged that the iPhone 4 has significantly more memory than previous iPhones and even the iPad.

Our friend Arnold Kim of MacRumors has verified that the iPhone 4 contains 512 MB of RAM, up from 256 MB in the current iPhone 3GS and the iPad. It turns out that Apple mentioned this during a session with developers at last week’s Worldwide Developers Conference. The session (#147) is downloadable for free for registered Apple developers.

512 MB of RAM would explain why the new iMovie app only works on the iPhone 4. It would also suggest that multitasking (coming with iOS 4) and general usability will be much smoother on an iPhone 4 compared to Apple’s other mobile offerings.

So let’s run down the list: a memory increase, the higher-resolution (960-by-640-pixel) display, a slimmer profile, a front-facing video camera, a 5-megapixel camera and 802.11N Wi-Fi. These are all improvements that make buying a current iPhone 3GS, even at its discounted rate, look like a sucker’s deal. No wonder Apple received 600,000 iPhone 4 pre-orders on day one.

Apple has traditionally been — how shall we put it — cagey with revealing memory and CPU specifics of its mobile devices, but MacRumors is today reporting its discovery that the fourth-gen iPhone’s RAM apportionment will be a very healthy 512MB. We’ve heard similar rumblings from reliable sources of our own. What it means is that iPhone 4 users can look forward to not only the same processor (though potentially at a lower speed) as their iPad compatriots, but also double the memory allowance. Of course, this will hardly be the first handset to offer half a gig for the OS to dance inside, but at least Apple’s keeping up with the times. Wouldn’t wanna disappoint all those pre-orderers now, would we?

Toshiba cooks up 128GB NAND flash for next-gen phones and PMPs

Leave it to Toshiba to make even the latest smartphones feel somewhat undernourished. Quadrupling the current high-end standard of 32GB of embedded memory, the Japanese company has announced an all-new 128GB slab of storage, built on a 32nm production process. It’s somehow managed to fit sixteen 8GB NAND chips, plus their controller, inside a 1.4mm tall structure, and samples are about to exit the factory doors this September. A 64GB variant will also be making an appearance, with both scheduled to enter mass production sometime during the fourth quarter. Should go pretty nicely with that 2GHz beastphone Moto is planning, don’t you think?

SanDisk ships first licensed Xbox 360 USB flash drive

Seems that April 6th ship date that GameStop posted back in March was a bit off, but hey — beggars can’t be choosers, yeah? SanDisk has just announced that it’s now shipping the planet’s first licensed Xbox 360 USB flash drive, which just became useful for easily transferring gamertags, game saves, map packs, Arcade downloads, etc. from one console to another. The device is pre-configured for plug-and-play, and SanDisk is even throwing in a one-month subscription to Xbox LIVE Gold for good measure. Naturally, you’ll be paying a premium for that Microsoft seal of approval, with the 8GB unit boasting an MSRP of $34.99 and the 16 gigger going for $69.99 (or £29.99 and £51.99 respectively in the UK). Hang tight if you can, though — we get the impression that loads more are on the way from every other storage outfit, and you know what competition does to pricing. Don’t you?

New Smartphone Memory Boosts Battery Life

Samsung has announced a new kind of memory module, built from phase change material, that’s three times faster than existing flash memory and could boost battery life by up to 20 percent, BBC News reports.
Phase change material for memory is an idea that dates back over four decades, but it’s only now becoming a possibility for today’s mobile devices. In essence, the material can record or erase data when heated, and tends to use far less power than existing equivalents.
The material can be constructed in a variety of ways, but the most common is a glass-like alloy of germanium, antimony, and titanium. Heating the material turns it into two separate forms with very different electrical resistances, meaning it can represent binary 0s and 1s, the report said.
The company plans to begin producing 40-nanometer, 512 megabit (Mbit) phase change memory (PCM) chips en masse toward the end of 2010, and will build them in the same format as existing designs. This way, vendors needing a little extra battery life can drop them right into existing production runs.

In the event that none of Eye-Fi’s existing 802.11n-capable offerings meet your wireless photo upload needs, take heart, because there’s a new model getting shoehorned between the $49.99 Connect X2 and the $99.99 Explore X2 that might just satisfy your discerning tastes. Like the entry-level Connect X2, the Geo X2 brings 4GB of Class 6 (read: high-speed) photo and video storage plus an “Endless Memory Mode” that can automatically delete shots once they’ve been safely uploaded to their destination — but like the name implies, the new model adds the automatic geotagging support offered by its pricier siblings. It’ll be an Apple Store exclusive starting next month for $69.99.

Along with the Geo X2, Eye-Fi is announcing a partnership with Devicescape that’s yielding significantly expanded support for open WiFi hotspots with splash screen logins such as those offered by schools, cafes, and WiFi providers like Boingo, arguably addressing one of the card’s biggest weaknesses. The new capability will be available to users by the end of May — so start finding more awesome stuff to photograph, alright?

Samsung first with 20-nm NAND Flash: cheaper, faster SD cards on the way (update)

Let it sink in, 20 nanometers. It wasn’t that long ago when 45-nm manufacturing processes were all the rage. Now we’ve got Samsung following Toshiba with a sub-25nm flash memory announcement all its own. Samsung’s 20-nm class 32Gb (gigabit) MLC NAND is sampling now, however, for use in embedded memory solutions and SD memory cards ranging from 4GB to 64GB. In addition to increasing densities and decreasing manufacturing costs, Samsung’s 20-nm class NAND is claimed to be more reliable and 30 percent faster than the 30-nm MLC chips forming the core of its existing 8GB and higher SD cards. That translates to cheaper class 10 (20MBps read, 10MBps write) SD cards when these ship to consumers later this year — always a good thing.

Update: There’s a chance that Samsung is playing fast and loose with words here. It repeatedly says “20-nm class” without specifying the actual node size. Is it 20nm, 22nm, 27nm? We’re digging for details and will update this post when we have them.

Update 2: Samsung’s response: “Unfortunately, we are not disclosing the actual process node for our memory devices. Thank you in advance for your understanding.” Yeah, we understand: Samsung’s process node is likely larger than the 25nm threshold set by Intel and Micron.

HP on Track to Build Computerized Real Brains

Scientists at Hewlett-Packard will soon announce advances in atomic-sized memristors, or memory resistors, that could set the stage for replacing transistors in today’s computers, the New York Times reports.
Memristors aren’t a new idea; a fellow by the name of Dr. Leon O. Chua first proposed them in 1971 at the University of California, Berkeley, but it’s only now that they’re becoming possible.
Memristors are smaller than semiconducting transistors; current 3-nanometer prototypes are an order of magnitude less than the smallest transistors available today. They store information even without an electrical current, and can be used for data processing as well as storage, according to the report. They could even form the core of analog computing systems that act as biological brains.
“Our brains are made of memristors,” he said, referring to the function of biological synapses, in the article. “We have the right stuff now to build real brains.” Scared yet? (Via Engadget) (Image credit: IEEE Spectrum/Wikimedia Commons)
