Hotmail adds ‘My friend’s been hacked!’ feature to finger phishers

Hotmail adds Hotmail’s spent the past few years playing catch up with the competition, but for the most part, it hasn’t done anything particularly groundbreaking with its services. Earth shattering might not be the appropriate descriptor for its latest addition, but Hotmail’s added a helpful new feature to distinguish plain old spam from the kind that comes form a trusted source. Now, when you get an email from a friend that smells of something sea dwelling — say a plea for some extra scratch from abroad — you can select “My friend’s been hacked!” from the “Mark as” menu, alerting the powers that be that your friend’s account has been hacked. When you mark a missive as junk, you can likewise click a box that reads: “I think this person was hacked!” Once that’s done, the spammers are kicked to the curb, and your friend is put through an “account recovery flow” the next time they attempt to log in. On the prevention front, Hotmail will soon roll out a new service that blocks users from selecting common passwords. It might not be enough to coax us over, but maybe this time the other guys could learn a few lessons.

Microsoft Store to expand retail presence by 2014, makes shopping for a PC redundant

Microsoft really wants to hang with the cool kids at the mall. Or, at least park its retail derriere next to the likes of Apple’s sleek boutiques — to the tally of 86 stores by 2014. We know most of you are scratching your heads thinking, “Microsoft store? Don’t you mean Best Buy?” Aye, but we don’t. The MS-branded outfits started cropping up in 2009 and with 11 locations already dotting our map, COO Kevin Turner hopes to plant some more Windows flags in California, Florida and most of the northeast. Comments regarding the Ballmer-led company’s retail expansion came during the 2011 Worldwide Partner Conference and centered mostly on the benefits of customer feedback. It sure is nice to see the former market monopolist catering to us plebes, but we’re more interested in the D-list stars and awkward dancing destined to accompany opening ceremonies.

Microsoft snatches up a pair of Sony related domains, internet runs amok with rumors

Companies snatching up domain names to protect their brand is nothing new, nor is it particularly interesting (unless that company happens to be Bank of America, and the domain in question is BrianMoynihanSucks.com). But, a recent a pair of recent registrations by Microsoft has piqued our curiosity. The folks at Redmond picked up both Microsoft-Sony.com and Sony-Microsoft.com, which has spurred speculation that everything from a Sony-Ericsson WP7 handset to a PlayBox 720 is on its way. The move is worth noting if only because the company doesn’t own similar domains, like LG-Microsoft.com or HTC-Microsoft.com. Of course, it could be something as mundane as a joint marketing campaign for Sony laptops or nothing at all — we’ll just have to wait and see.

Microsoft leaks Tulalip internal project, planning to launch social search… thing?

Google’s Social Search may have to make room for an extra guest at the table, now that Microsoft has leaked the homepage for what looks like a new social service — of some sort. Fusible first discovered the page sitting at socl.com, a domain that MS recently purchased. Known as Tulalip (also the name of a group of Native American tribes near Redmond), the project promises to help users “find what you need and share what you know easier than ever” — which, at this early stage, is pretty difficult to do, considering that the page’s search field is non-functioning. The platform also features sign-in buttons for Facebook and Twitter, the latter of which leads to an authorization page explaining that Tulalip is an “experimental app,” and that it will be able to “update your profile” and “post tweets for you” (see the screenshot, after the break). It’s too early, of course, to say whether or not the service will launch as a direct competitor to Social Search, or if it’ll even get off the ground, though Microsoft insists that it didn’t mean to tip its hand so early. The Socl.com welcome page now reads: “Socl.com is an internal design project from one of Microsoft’s research teams which was mistakenly published to the web. We didn’t mean to, honest.”

Microsoft promises Mango phones in September for Imagine Cup finalists

Another year, another Imagine Cup. The annual competition, sponsored by Microsoft, gives students the opportunity to apply technology to tackle hunger, poverty, and other global problems, thereby making the world a better place (for you and for me, and the entire human race). We’d say the finalists deserve a pretty cool reward for their efforts, right? According to a status update on the Cup’s Twitter account — an update that’s conspicuously been pulled — one of the prizes for finalists is a Windows Phone with Mango pre-loaded, a jackpot they’d receive by September. We’re not completely certain if this will be a pre-release version intended for developers or if it’s an indication that the final iteration will be ready for public use by this time; we’ve only heard that Mango’s slotted for a fall release, so both are definite possibilities. Since many of these students are developers, however, it’s entirely possible they’ll receive a prototype device with an early version of the firmware. No phone could replace the warm feelings in their heart for such a great accomplishment, but at least they can share their joy with built-in Twitter integration.

Microsoft licenses GeoVector’s augmented reality search for local guidance (video)

After the ho-hum AR demonstration of Windows Phone Mango, Microsoft appears to be stepping up its game by licensing a mature set of technologies from GeoVector, (a company previously known for its defunct World Surfer application). While the details remain elusive, Ballmer’s crew was granted a multi-year, non-exclusive right to use and abuse the pointing-based local search and augmented reality elements of GeoVector’s portfolio — surely capable of bringing Local Scout to the next level. While much of the technology relies on GPS and a compass for directional-based discovery, the licensor also holds intellectual property for object recognition (à la Google Goggles), although it’s unclear whether this element falls within the agreement. Of course, Microsoft could have turned to Nokia’s Live View AR for many of the same tools, but that would have been far too obvious. Microsoft’s Andy Lees on Windows’ future: one ecosystem to rule them all

Microsoft has seen the future of personal computing, and it’s a world with a single Windows ecosystem. Windows Phone head honcho Andy Lees — who said that we won’t be seeing WP7 on tablets during Microsoft’s Worldwide Partner Conference yesterday — still sees slates, phones, consoles, and PCs playing together in perfect harmony. His plan is to provide users with a consistent experience across all Microsoft-powered devices, though he didn’t flesh out exactly how this singular ecosystem will work. Given recent evidence indicating Xbox integration in Windows 8 and the UI similarities between the forthcoming desktop OS and WP7, it seems that Microsoft is well on its way to a consolidated future. But, only time will tell if Mr. Lees’ can deliver us from fragmentation with a unified Windows.

Nokia prepping $120 million ad campaign ahead of Windows Phone launch?

With the dust from its Microsoft partnership having somewhat settled, Nokia is reportedly looking to kick off its forthcoming line of Windows Phones with a major marketing campaign. According to Marketing Magazine, Elop & Co. have already devoted some £80 million (about $127 million) to the six-month ad endeavor, which is expected to launch in October. Considering all the job cuts and downwardly revised corporate forecasts, an advertising refresh would seem like a logical way for Nokia to embark on a new era. But the company is remaining rather mum on the subject, saying, “We are excited about the Nokia with Windows phone, but it’s not our policy to comment on specific campaigns for unannounced products.” Awkwardly executed “leaks,” on the other hand, are an entirely different matter.

Andy Lees says no to Mango on Windows tablets

Microsoft’s Andy Lees quashed dreams of Windows tablets running a Mango-style OS during a talk at the company’s Worldwide Partners Conference today, saying the mobile operating system would conflict with the outfit’s ideas of what makes a slate. According to Electronista, Lees said the computing giant sees tablets as PCs, making the mobile OS incompatible with its vision. He went on to say that Windows 8’s networking and printing functions make it more suited to the needs of tablet users. So, if you’re looking for the sweet style of Mango, it looks like you’ll have get your hands on one of these bad boys.

Ballmer: Microsoft will launch Xbox Music this fall (update: not true)

Steve Ballmer revealed a new service yesterday that should be, ahem, music to your ears when it starts spinning this fall. During Microsoft’s Worldwide Partner Conference in Los Angeles, the Windows chief mentioned Xbox Music — a MS-branded music streaming service, with over 11 million songs and Kinect compatibility. That last feature will let you shout your music selections across the room, and could result in some pretty gnarly sibling battles whenever music tastes don’t match. Unlike the console’s current last.fm offering, we can only hope that Music will support multitasking, allowing you to settle those musical differences in the virtual boxing ring as the beat goes on, rather than on the living room floor.

Update: The Business Insider editor who reported the quote tweeted a correction and updated the article, explaining “No new Xbox Music service coming this fall. Just voice command to existing service. ‘Xbox. Music.’ Correction posted.”
