Google Testing Groupon Competitor

google-offers-640.jpg

Google is going to get into the coupon business, damn it–whether that means buying the leader in the field (Groupon) or launching a direct competitor. The former didn’t work out so well–while the company reportedly came really close to securing a multi-billion Groupon buyout, but the coupon site ultimately opted to stay independent.

Now Google is apparently starting from scratch with its own Groupon-like site, Google Offers. Mashable managed to grab some info on the yet-to-be-launched Offers. Google confirmed the existence of the site (a welcome change from most companies’ “we don’t comment on speculation” comment), telling the blog,

Google is communicating with small businesses to enlist their support and participation in a test of a pre-paid offers/vouchers program. This initiative is part of an ongoing effort at Google to make new products, such as the recent Offer Ads beta, that connect businesses with customers in new ways. We do not have more details to share at this time, but will keep you posted.

And here’s the explanation from the Offers fact sheet,

Google Offers is a new product to help potential customers and clientele find great deals in their area through a daily e-mail.

Sounds pretty familiar, huh? The user gets an e-mail and has a limited amount of time to respond to it. Offers will utilize Google Checkout and will have the requisite social connections (Facebook, Twitter, Google Reader, and Buzz–remember Buzz?).

Google in the process of recruiting businesses to join the upcoming service. In fact, Mashable seems to have gotten its hands on just such a document.

Everyone’s on Facebook and Twitter, right? Even the U.S. Army. Last year, the Army’s Online and Social Media Division created the 2010 Social Media Book. The handbook provides guidance and information for Army leaders and Army families. It also has operations security tips, branding information, checklists, regulations and frequently asked questions. It’s a veritable one-stop-shop for all your Army social media needs. The new edition has even more guidance, advanced tips, additional case studies, and the best practices.

Google Co-Founder Larry Page Named CEO

Google head Eric Schmidt addressed the company’s admittedly “complicated” management structure today, by offering up a “simplified” version, which featured some significant changes to the way the company is run. Schmidt’s own job will be shifting from CEO to executive chairman, stepping aside to make room for co-founder Larry Page, a role he will start in on April 4th.

“In this new role I know he will merge Google’s technology and business vision brilliantly,” wrote Schmidt. “I am enormously proud of my last decade as CEO, and I am certain that the next 10 years under Larry will be even better! Larry, in my clear opinion, is ready to lead.”

As for Schmidt’s own new gig, “I will focus wherever I can add the greatest value: externally, on the deals, partnerships, customers and broader business relationships, government outreach and technology thought leadership that are increasingly important given Google’s global reach; and internally as an advisor to Larry and Sergey.”

Page’s co-founder Sergey Brin, meanwhile, will take the official title “co-founder.” Easy enough. According to Schmidt, he will, “devote his time and energy to strategic projects, in particular working on new products.”

NFL Gets Football Helmet Impact Removed from Toyota Ad

If there’s one thing the NFL hates, it’s commercials that feature the game of football–let me rephrase that–if there’s one thing the NFL hates, it’s commercial that portray the game of football in a slightly negative light. In fact, the league apparently requested that Toyota pull a clip featuring helmet-to-helmet contact from a recent commercial.

The spot was about crash technology. In it, a spokeswoman mentions a new Toyota technology that has been used by researchers to reduce football head injuries. Apparently the shot of two dudes’ helmets colliding was too much for the league.

Mark Zuckerberg and Katy Perry Are Pals

Look! Proof! A picture! Now if we could just get Perry and Zooey Deschanel in a room together, just to make sure that they are, in fact, different people.

Angry Birds: Coming to a Television Near You

Angry Birds Peace Treaty

Apparently we just can’t get enough Angry Birds. The phenomenon is still going strong: the game holds top honors in the iTunes and Android app stores, has spawned everything from plush toys to a board game, and now, according to a post at Mashable, Rovio is interested in turning the game into an animated television series.
How exactly the cute little physics game could turn into a television show with a coherent story that could run for multiple episodes without becoming a parody of itself is anyone’s guess, but if there’s anyone that could turn a simple premise into something addictive, it’s clearly Rovio.
Rovio CEO Mikael Hed said that broadcast media is a “big focus area” for him, but there’s no indication there are networks lining up to air an Angry Birds Show. Still, there’s clearly no stopping this franchise.

The Turnstyle Concept Turntable Defines Minimalism

Turnstyle Turntable

Turntables have something of a definitive look, but designer R.D. Silva’s Turnstyle Turntable is built to remove all of the bulk and extra material from a turntable and reduce it to its most essential components: essentially a motor that a record can be mounted to, a needle and cartridge on a movable arm, power and volume controls, and a weight in the back to keep the needle on the record and the player in one place.
Ironically, the Turnstyle has a built-in speaker, which most people wouldn’t consider essential on a record player.  The Turnstyle is just a prototype, and it’s not clear if it will ever be a product anyone could actually order, but it’s definitely an interesting design.

HP Investing Mark Hurd Firing Craziness

I’m not going to lie to you–we had a field day with the whole Mark Hurd, HP/Oracle kerfuffle. If you don’t believe me, take a peak over here. The odd executive sexual harassment/ expense report scandal really hit its stride last fall. Now HP is taking a serious look at exactly what went down. The company has formed a committee of directors to investigate Hurd’s exit, says a court document from January 14th.

Hurd exited the company amongst a sexual harassment suit filed by Intimate Obsession and Body of Influence 2 actress Jodie Fisher–though the company ultimately cited “accounting irregularities” as the reason behind his departure, stating that there were issues with a number of expense reports.

The decision to investigate comes after lawyers for company shareholders called Hurd’s $40 million separation agreement “corporate waster.” The former CEO is now a co-president at Oracle.

The Kensington PowerLift Props and Charges Up Your iPhone

Kensington Powerlift

iPhone and iPod docks are a dime a dozen, but the new Kensington PowerLift is a dock that’s designed to fit you just right. The dock is a compact package with a 30-pin dock connector on one side, a kick-stand for your iPhone on another side, a battery under the hood, and a USB cable tucked into the top.
The dock connector folds out to the angle you want to keep your iPhone propped up to, and the kick-stand folds up to keep your iPhone in place and propped up.
The USB cable folds out from the base of the dock and connects to either your power brick or your computer for charging and syncing, but you may not need it thanks to the PowerLift’s built-in 1200 mAh battery, which can give your iPhone a boost when it’s running low. When not in use, the PowerLift folds up into a small square brick and packs away nicely. It’s available for pre-order from Kensington for $49.99 list price.

Microsoft Exec Launches Money-Scented Perfume Line

A Microsoft executive is getting into serious Scrooge McDuck territory with this one. Patrick McCarthy, a Chicago-based VP for the software giant, has given the world a new line of perfume and cologne. It apparently smells like money.

The new, familiar scents go by the name His Money Cologne and Her Money Eau de Parfum. McCarthy believes that spraying liquid money on your body can really affect your outlook on life.

Says the executive-turned-perfumist,

I really feel that people who wear this will feel more confident. I got the idea after reading a story about a Japanese study that showed a significant increase in worker productivity when the smell of money was pumped through vents into factories.

Apparently a trip to the ATM machine also inspired McCarthy to get into the liquid smell business. The stink of cash will run you $35 a bottle online.
