Energizer Keeps Phones Going and Going

energizer.pngThe Energizer Inductive Charger keeps your phone going, and going, and going, just like that rabbit!

A wireless induction pad, the charger works with all Qi-enabled devices. Not quite a square, the charge plate measures about 7-inches by 8-inches, and is less than a half an inch thick. With two large inductive charging areas on the pad and one USB charging port, the cord-free station can power three devices at once.

You can place the phone anywhere on the circles that mark charging area. There are no magnets or hidden docks, or rules about where exactly the phone needs to be within the circle. Put it down and you are set.

The Qi-enabled sleeve for the iPhone 3G/3GS and batery door for the BlackBerry Curve 8900 are also available separately.

Pricing and availability information has not been disclosed.

Speech-to-Text Glasses use Augmented Reality to Aid the Deaf

babelfisk.jpg

Danish designer Mads Hindhed has created glasses that instantly take spoken speech, converts it into readable text, and project them onto the inside of glasses.

The tech is called “BabelFisk,” which is Danish for “Babel Fish”–not to be confused with Yahoo!’s Babel Fish translation site (hey there, impending Yahoo! law suit). This tech is designed to bring the hearing impaired into
any conversation. And that’s going to help a lot of people.

On a sidenote, BabelFisk offers a hint of what we should expect from augmented reality. For convenience alone, a pair of projection-ready glasses really makes far more sense than holding up a cell phone to gain additional information from the world around you. That’s clunky, offers no privacy from lookie-loos around you, and busies at least one of your hands which you could otherwise be using for all sorts of neat stuff.

Projection-ready glasses that combine the true world with added information will be the future. Think the way the Terminator saw the world. It makes me want to hunt down Edward Furlong just thinkin’ about it!  Expect something along those lines when we live blog Apple’s media event in 2014-ish.

DIY Mini-BBQ Made From an Altoids Tin

Altoids_BBQ.jpg

The DIY-tacular folks over at Instructables have all sorts of crafty shenanigans that you can get yourself into should you be stuck home with the kids on a rainy afternoon, unemployed, or a just some kind of nut who likes to keep their hands busy. The whole spectrum. And they’re gonna make the most out of this last unofficial weekend of summer.

They have step-by-step instructions on how to prepare an adorable (functioning!) little mini-BBQ out of nothing more than an Altoids tin, pair of computer fan guards, and assorted toolbox crumbs. It is fueled by a standard-sized briquette and–the author claims–is capable “of cooking a full-size hot dog (cut down to size) or smaller hamburger
patties with ease.”

So while all those suckers are out there fighting with Hurricane Earl for their burgers, you can sit by your open window with your adorable little mini Altoids grill and pass judgment on your culinary inferiors. And isn’t that what summer is all about?

Dont Walk, Zoom with Titan High-Roller Suitcase

titan_luggage.jpgEver sprint across the airport terminal to reach the gate and still miss the flight? Next time, skip the running and zoom through the concourse via a TITAN High-Roller Suitcase.

Still a concept, the suitcase comes with a footrest to transform into a scooter. The suitcase (with your beginnings) remain in the front. The three-wheeler uses the two wheels on the suitcase front and the single wheel  on the back footrest.

A laptop case slides off the top of the suitcase to slightly shrink the bag. When placed under the seat in front of you, the space cleared by the laptop case creates a perfect footrest.

Designed for the business types who fly regularly, the High-Roller would appeal to aynone who sees a kid fly by on a scooter, “I wish I didn’t have to walk.”

Perform CPR Correctly with PocketCPR

zoll-pocket-cpr.jpg

Be a hero and save a life with Zoll’s PocktCPR. Intended to be used by people already trained in CPR, it reminds the user what to do and gives feedback on whether it’s being done correctly.

Performing CPR incorrectly may harm the victim. For that reason, many bystanders are often reluctant to step in and be the hero. PocketCPR issues step-by-step audio and visual instructions on what to do.

By placing the PocketCPR on the victim’s chest before beginning CPR chest compressions, the device can give real-time verbal feedback and visual indicators to ensure it is being done correctly. If it’s done correctly, PocketCPR will say, “Good compressions,” and flash four LED lights. Otherwise, it will say “Push harder,” and flash just one LED.

The accelerometer inside the device measures the rate and depth of chest compressions and an audible metronome helps maintain the rate and rhythm.

Before beginning the compressions, the instructions remind you to calm down, check for the victim’s responsiveness and call for help.

There is a silent mode to suppress audible feedack. The lights continue to flash in silent mode.

The battery lasts about 12 hours before needing to be changed.

PocketCPR is approved by the FDA and is available for $149 online. Disposable sanitary slip-covers are sold separately. An app is also available to transform the iPhone into a PocketCPR. The app is not cleared by the FDA and should be used for training purposes only.

Johnathan Fatal1ty Wendel to Design Gaming Furniture

That chair you’re sitting on right now–it’s nice, but is it really, you know, gamey? I mean, you don’t really plan on doing all of your gaming on that thing, do you? n00b. It’s hard to find good dedicated gaming furniture these days. Thankfully, professional gamer/licenser of video game-related products, Johnathan “Fatal1ty” Wendel, is on the case.

Fatal1ty has signed on with Southern Enterprises, a Dallas-based furniture company, with the intention to “develop and distribute a custom line of gaming furniture tailored specifically to the ergonomic requirements and performance enhancement features of gamers.”

So, what precisely are the needs and concerns of your average hardcore gamer? Says Fatal1ty, “I’ve played on a lot of different setups at LANs and tournaments and plan to build the ultimate experience in furniture for a gamer to dominate his world.”

Okay, well, that’s not really helpful. Let’s see what Southern Enterprises’ executive VP Dirk Brinkerhoff has to say about the matter,

It is our hope that our collaboration with Fatal1ty will enable us to create furniture gaming pieces that will provide enhanced capability and functionally, added comfort and ease of use, and that the combination of these features will ultimately enable each player who uses our Fatal1ty branded furniture to be a better gamer than they were without it.

Comfort and functionality, check. What about the cupholders?

The fruits of Fatal1ty and Southern Enterprises’ labor will arrive in spring of next year.

Smart Toilets Will Rule the Bathrooms of the Future

smart toilet.jpg

While I’ve never experienced them firsthand, I’ve heard tales of Japan’s futuristic Buck Rogers toilets. While the US has become complacent with the singular functionality of our toilets, the Japanese are living it up in the bathroom with heated seats, water jets with pressure and temperature controls, hot-air dryers, and background music.

And now, the Japanese are rocketing their toilets into the information age.

The newest model offers an instant health check-up every time someone makes a deposit in the porcelain bank. The toilet has the ability to collect urine and measure it for sugar content, temperature checks, blood pressure, and more. The information can then be displayed on a wall-mounted display.

The so-called “Intelligence Toilet” is available from the Toto company for between $4,100 and $5,850.

If you’ve gotten through your adolescent, scatological tee-hee-ing, you will appreciate the role these toilets can serve for the well-being of the elderly and the sick. It can add an element of dignity and self-sufficiency to patients who otherwise might need the aid of a nurse or caretaker to take these measurements.

Thank you, Japan, for your magical toilets from the future.

Play Your PS3 like an XBox 360 with the Nyko Raven Controller

Nyko Raven Wireless ControllerIf you ask gamers whether they prefer the controller that ships with the PlayStation 3 or the one that comes with the XBox 360, you’ll probably get passionate defenders on either side, but most will likely choose the XBox 360 controller, mostly because of the way it fits in your hands and the placement of the buttons. If you’re one of those gamers who really wish they could use their XBox 360 controller on their PS3, the new Nyko Raven Wireless Controller for the PlayStation 3 is a dream come true.

The Raven looks like an XBox 360 controller, and if the buttons weren’t labeled with Sony’s signature square, triangle, circle, and X buttons, you wouldn’t think it was for the PS3. The entire controller is covered in rubberized plastic so it won’t slip during long, sweaty-palmed gaming sessions, and has a 25-foot range. It uses a rechargeable battery that can be connected to mini-USB for power, and alert lights that let you know when power is scarce. Best of all, the controller has motion and rumble support, so you don’t lose features by buying a new controller. The Nyko Raven can be yours for $34.99 list.
