We have to hand it to Research in Motion. No matter what feelings you may have for (or against) the company, it’s sure doing a great job staying in the news day after day. After unleashing a bevy of reviews for the Bold 9930, Torch 9810 and Torch 9850, now we’re hearing whisperings about the latest Curve. The 9360, aka the Apollo, is ready to make its way to both sides of the northern border, beginning its North American tour with Bell on August 29th and swiftly making its way to T-Mobile September 14th. We’re hearing that the 9360 will have a 2.4-inch screen with 480 x 360 resolution, an 800MHz CPU, and BlackBerry 7 installed. As is the case with most leaked screenshots, we can’t know for sure that these days will actually stick, but at least it gives us a solid indication that the device is inbound sooner than we were expecting.
Android’s always had a best friend forever (or, for the time being) in Verizon. Together, the two companies were able to establish Andy Rubin’s mobile OS as a serious platform competitor, fighting back against the then threat of AT&T’s exclusive iPhone juggernaut with Moto’s Droid. Flash forward to present day and it’s no wonder Big Red’s SVP John Thorne is giving a public-facing, albeit tentative, thumbs up to Google’s Motorola Mobility acquisition. Thorne’s official line on the deal concerns the “stability [it might bring] to the ongoing smartphone patent disputes,” but the executive declined to comment further, citing a lack of known details for the proposed buyout. Certainly, the wireless operator has good reason to keep a close eye on the takeover, as a recent Chitika survey pegs it with a commanding 41 percent share of active Android handsets. So far, only Nokia has come out from behind Microsoft’s shadow, hailing the move as a boon for WP7 and casting shade on Google’s intentions. Not much is known about the HTC Vigor, but if the above image is accurate, we have more than a wagonload to look forward to. A supposed render and spec list of the new superphone showed up on The Phone House, a Dutch online retailer, and was quietly taken off the site at a later time. According to the site, the Vigor will have a 4.3-inch HD display with 1280 x 720 resolution; it’ll also offer a 1.5GHz dual-core CPU, Android 2.3.4, and integrated Beats Technology — which would make the Vigor the first labor of HTC’s latest purchasing decision. There’s no word on if the device will have LTE inside, though Verizon docs indicated previously that it’s geared up to be the Thunderbolt’s replacement sometime this fall. This time, let’s get that battery life figured out, okay?
Are you excited that a 3D phone is coming to AT&T? If you answered yes, sit down and think happy thoughts, because we’re now hearing that the Thrill 4G — aka the LG Optimus 3D — may be delayed once more. According to a screenshot leaked from Radio Shack, the ill-fated device is getting pushed back to a tentative September 4th launch date for unknown reasons. As such, the reseller’s putting a halt on pre-orders of the phone until further notice. We’ve reached out to AT&T for official comment and will let you know if we hear anything back. Regardless, at the rate this phone is going, the Thrill is quickly devolving into a depression.
The BlackBerry Colt — RIM’s presciently named round three handset entry, or last grasp at smartphone dominance? You’ll have to wait until the end of the year to decide, as this latest bout of insider hearsay points to a sooner-than-expected launch. Citing several trusted industry sources, Dutch website Tweakers.net reports that the Canadian electronics company is rushing its first QNX-based smartphone out to the mobile market ahead of its previously rumored 2012 Q1 launch. The phone, purported to lack BES, is said to pack a 4.3-inch display and a single-core (yes, you haven’t misread that) 1.2GHz Qualcomm MSM8255 processor. We can understand if you’re already underwhelmed. Releasing a single core device into an impending quad-core wireless world is one sure way for the company to castrate its young mobile buck. Still, with gossip being what it is, we’d advise you to take this news with a heavy lick of salt. You never know, those co-chairs up in Waterloo could still surprise us yet.
Oppo, beloved maker of a variety of electronics rarely released outside of China, is jumping into the smartphone business with an Android-powered slider called the Oppo X903. Take the following specs with a pinch of salt, but the device is believed to have a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8255 CPU and comes with an eight megapixel camera and a 3.97-inch WVGA IPS screen. So far, so normal — what’s not normal is the ad campaign for the phone, in which a bemused Leonardo DiCaprio stares glumly out of a moving train as a woman writes “find me” in condensation on a perfectly clean window. That’s right after the break and you won’t have to look too hard to find press shots of the phone itself either. They’re down there in the gallery.
Japanese breakbeat band Hifana have teamed up with the digital contents label of Wieden and Kennedy Tokyo, W+K Tokyo Lab, to produce a very cool sound sampler, sequencer and game free iPhone App. After running a similar game on the Hifana website in the past, the app is a revival that similarly lets users simulate different sounds that Hifana use in their live performances. Making it that bit more interactive though the App also features a socially interactive game, pitching competing “iPhone Djs” against each other to see who can perform the best recreation of a Hifana track.
What is nice is that this app isn’t just a marketing gimmick for the band but actually a very cool music tool, just check out the video below to see what can be done with it! As well as being able to tap out various different breaks and rhythms using the Apps functions users can also record multiple sounds themselves and lay them into a track. Hifana have been signed to W+K Tokyo Lab since their first album and the app is in keeping with the band who are renowned for using an MPC sampler as a musical instrument in their live performances to create real-time breakbeats without the use of any pre-programmed sequences.
Cleverly widening the reach of the band as well as adding another interactive layer to the App, it uses Twitter to let players publish their scores from a game. Players can choose either band member Keizo or Juicy and perform songs by tapping the correct corresponding flashing pads. The tie in with both the music and the app is a clever way at not only pushing the bands album “24H” but a way of creating a more interactive platform for fans and building on the bands image of using “innovative technology-based creative expressions”.
Icelandic singer Bjork recently released her “App Album” Biophilia, which mixed up the way that digital music is distributed and aimed at tying in the music, the concept of the song, lyrics, visuals and the interactivity of the app. Similarly the Hifana App adds another experience to the albums music, letting fans experience making the bands tracks themselves, almost a behind the scenes peak at the different sounds and techniques the band employs. With the music industry struggling with the rise in listeners choosing alternative, less legal, routes to get their hands on music today, this kind of extra brings added value incentive for the fan to buy into the band as a whole package. Labels and bands that start to make use of ubiquitous smartphone capabilities or tablet devices can now leverage a whole new market, and could even be taken to the next level maybe tying in live performances, visuals and apps for one unified, fully interactive experience.
Anxious RIM fans tired of waiting for that app to download will be happy to know that AT&T has confirmed August 21st as the official launch date for its “4G” BlackBerry, the Torch 9810. Although the new QWERTY smartphone is powered by AT&T’s 4G network of the HSPA+ variety, the release still marks an upgrade from the previous gen Torch 9800‘s 3G speeds. Running BlackBerry 7 OS, the 9810 will have a 1.2GHz processor, 3.2-inch touchscreen display, 8GB of onboard memory (with microSD expansion up to 32GB), and a 5 megapixel camera with 720p HD video capabilities. It’ll ship for $49.99 after rebates and a two-year contract.
Is Microsoft preparing to fill in Google’s old mobile boots? It could very well be, now that the search king has firmly committed to the hardware side of the mobile business. According to a report on GigaOM, MS was one of many potential suitors circling Motorola’s treasure trove of patents, effectively forcing El Goog to swoop in for the $12.5 billion kill. Moto’s portfolio of 17,000 patents and 7,500 patent applications would have significantly strengthened Redmond’s attack on the Android platform, but it appears the loss might actually benefit MS in other unintended ways. Despite the cheery, public well-wishing from handset makers, insider rumblings indicate a possible mass OEM defection to Windows Phone 7 could shortly be afoot, paving the way for a fierce, three-way mobile OS fight. For its part, Google doesn’t seem too worried about the competition, considering the deal’s hefty $2.5 billion break-up fee — a percentage three times that of the AT&T / T-Mobile merger penalty — a confident financial sign it intends to win this wireless race.
Google’s announcement today of its planned Motorola Mobility acquisition may come as a surprise to some, but Moto’s dedication to producing Android handsets, along with its recent $56 million Q2 net loss and comprehensive patent portfolio, make this a logical next move for Mountain View’s search giant. Operating independently — for the near-term, at least — both companies will cooperate to grow Android, while Google claims that it will remain committed to its other partners as well.
