AT&T discontinues A-List feature for new customers, effective today

Nearly two years after AT&T introduced its A-List with Rollover plans to become more competitive against the likes of T-Mobile, Alltel and Verizon, the carrier has decided to nix the feature as of today. After receiving screenshots and a leaked memo detailing Ma Bell’s intent, we reached out to company reps, who confirmed to us that these plans are indeed going away. While new customers will no longer be able to benefit from having a pool of five or ten numbers (depending on the plan) to call as much as they want, anyone currently using the service will be grandfathered in. One more disclaimer: switching rate plans from individual to family (or vice versa) may wipe the A-List feature off, so proceed with caution. Head below to read AT&T’s official statement regarding the matter, as well as a few shots of the leaked memo.

Samsung Galaxy S II LTE ready for your reservation on Rogers

There was much rejoicing Stateside upon Tuesday’s unveiling of the Samsung Galaxy S II, but it’s Canadian fans that are getting the party favors ready. A reservation page for the Galaxy S II LTE — essentially the device we’ve grown to admire, but with an added 4G turbo boost — is now up and running on Rogers’ site. As a disclaimer, the only way to get one put on hold with your name on it is to fork over a $40 refundable deposit. We haven’t seen any change in the phone’s official release, so for now we should still expect it before the end of Autumn; at least speed enthusiasts are now one step closer to having the highly-coveted device in their hands.

[Thanks, Mariano]

The Nokia N9 will be considered a rarity in the US, UK and Germany when it’s released, but at least fans Down Under won’t have to look very far to get their hands on one. Espoo’s officially announced its intention of selling the MeeGo device on Telstra, Optus and Vodafone, in addition to distributing it through several major retailers. Look for the one-of-a-kind handset to make its way to Australia in October for roughly $850; those who opt for the 16GB model will be able to choose from black, blue and pink, whereas the 64GB version will only be made available in black. Sprint to double Upgrade Fee to $36 starting September 9th?

It’s time to either find your favorite teddy bear or pinch a few hundred pennies. In today’s second bout of unfortunate news coming from Overland Park, SprintFeed is reporting that we should brace ourselves for yet another hike in one-time charges on September 9th. This time, it’s the oh-so-beloved Upgrade Fee that’s the victim of inflation, getting beefed up to $36 for any existing customer who desires a new phone; if you’re hoping to renew contracts on multiple lines, Sprint is graciously willing to cap the fees at a maximum of $150. There’s speculation that these bumps may have something to do with the latest rumor coming out of Cupertino, but it may also simply be a routine policy change. Regardless of the motive, it means anyone holding out for the next best thing should start looking under every couch cushion they sit on, in hopes of scrounging up a few extra bucks.

HTC working on Sensation special edition with Beats and 1.5GHz dual-core CPU?

Looking for a way to listen to some sensational beats? Soon, we hope to do so using a Sensation with Beats. According to a document leaked to CNET, HTC is planning a revised Special Edition of its popular Sensation that throws in Beats technology and adds a few other improvements at the same time. On the drawing board is a ramped-up 1.5GHz dual-core CPU (up from 1.2GHz), a massive 1,730mAh battery and four times the internal storage at 4GB. If we can trust the above doc, it appears the phone will be offered with GSM and TD-SCDMA — pegging China as a key market — and has a starting price of $850. We can only hope the high cost is an extreme case and won’t be a precedent set for all future HTC / Beats devices.

Windows Phone 7 Mango will play nicer with Macs, update your Connector app now

Windows Phone 7.5 will be wearing more Mac-friendly pajamas when it comes. Microsoft’s Connector app just got updated to Version 2.0 and it enables both Marketplace support and ringtone transfers for Mango-equipped handsets. It also packs some other improvements which already work with WP 7.0, including drag-and-drop file importing from the Browse Device window, better backup and restore operations, and full sync and import support for Apple Aperture software. Connector 2.0 is ready and waiting at the App Store and Mango should poke its head around the mountain any day.

Samsung GT-i9220 confirmed as smartphone with dual-band WiFi, specs remain in rumorville

Samsung’s GT-i9220 has been swirling through the rumor mills for a while now, and we’ve seen tons of conflicting reports regarding this little monster. While its specifications remain shaky at best, a few solid tidbits courtesy of the Wi-Fi Alliance indeed reveal the GT-i9220 as a smartphone, which counters previous speculation that it was merely a media player. Additionally, this Sammy will feature dual-band 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi, the latter being an uncommon (though entirely welcome) feature for smartphones, and lending credence to its high-end specs. As for those details, the most plausible rumors suggest we’ll see a dual-core 1.4GHz CPU, a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display at 720p along with an 8 megapixel camera. Obviously, internals like these are fightin’ words in the smartphone domain, so we’re forced to take them with a grain of salt until something more solid crawls out of the woodwork.

Motorola Pro+ announced with Gingerbread, few other improvements

As it turns out, Plus is becoming the new Moto sequel. Soon after announcing the Defy+, a phone that offers a moderate bump in specs from its predecessor, HelloMoto is back at it again with the Pro+. This obvious follow-up to the Motorola Pro (or Droid Pro, as it’s known in the US) doesn’t bring much of an improvement to the table. It’s adorned with the same 1GHz CPU, 3.1-inch VGA (640 x 480) display, 512MB of RAM and five megapixel camera; the largest differences in the new model are the inclusion of Android 2.3, 4GB of internal storage, an improved battery (1,600mAh) and a rounded design — in contrast to the original’s squared look. It’s due in Asia and Europe starting in October, so keep an eye out… if that “Plus” is enough to excite you. Head below for the full press release.

Huawei Honor leaks into the wild, prepares for ascension to the flagship throne?

Huawei’s handsets may not get the high-profile, stateside attention other OEMs are subject to, but that’s no reason for us to turn a blind eye to the company’s efforts. Spotted out in the wild with an accompanying spec list, the Honor (or U8860) purportedly packs a 1.4GHz processor, 4-inch FWVGA LCD display, 5 megapixel rear-facing camera capable of 720p video, a thickness of 9.9mm and an unspecified version of Android 2.3. Judging by the phones Europe- and Asia-only UMTS 900MHz / 2100MHz bands, it’s highly likely we won’t have the honor of seeing the company’s rumored flagship device grace North American shores. We’ll keep an eye out and let you know if we catch this one slipping through the FCC’s arms.
