What a Christmas present this was! Vista Transformation Pack 6 was just released yesterday with all kinds of new goodies including 3rd-party applications for providing features like Taskbar thumbnail previews and a remarkable sidebar just like Vista’s. In case you are unfamiliar with this application I will forewarn you that there is a tendency for it not to uninstall all the way in case you decide that you don’t like it. I think most of the time the problem lies within replacing the icons with the old Windows XP ones, but I have personally never had issues.

With that being said I want to give credit to “Windows X” for making this release better than all previous versions. After installing the Vista Transformation Pack you’ll notice that all of the following have been changed to appear more like Vista:

• Boot screen
• Welcome Screen / Logon Screen
• New msstyles files (visual styles)
• New desktop and file icons
• New toolbar icons
• Progress Dialogs
• Sounds scheme
• System Tray icons
• New Wallpapers
• Windows Media Player Skins

 Besides for bug fixes, here is a list of what’s new in version 6:

• Additional Vista related applications:
  • Vista Sidebar
  • VisualTooltip (Taskbar thumbnail view and also have docking mode)
  • Styler with Kaye Irene’s Vista Perfection X4 Styler Toolbar
  • Start Orb (fix cutting edge start orb in msstyles)
  • Vista Live Messenger RC skin
• Applying Vista setup screen transformation in setup integration
• Browsable System files source for uninstallation so user can restore original system files from setup CD during uninstallation
• Display configuration for the best view of machine’s display
• Fixing file’s PE checksum after resource patching to keep files more secure
• Launch & Maintenance Center in transformation destination in case user already have transformed the system
• Partially x64 support for Vista visual stuff but not for system files (experimental)
• Option to reserved updated system files after uninstallation or not
• Skipping system file verification patch on setup integration
• Vista RTM system applications transformation:
  • Photo printing wizard
  • Remote Desktop Connection
  • Volume Control
  • Windows Task Manager
  • System Restore
  • Connection Manager
  • Windows Update Client
  • Media Center

Those of you attempting to upgrade from a previous version of Vista Transformation Pack shouldn’t have a problem, but if you do please mention it in the comments so others know what to expect. This application is so close to Vista that I bet you could trick 99% of the population that don’t have hands-on experience with Vista. So if you are looking to give your XP machine a fresh new look you should check out the new Vista Transformation Pack 6!

Depending in your level of geekness, an extravagant mod can be pretty cool. And arcade consoles are damn near always really cool. But making a stand-up console game out of your beloved Nintendo DS? That is pretty amazing. And throwing in a Sony PSP for good measure — well, that might just elevate your project to a work of art. We don’t have too many technical details on this bad boy (after all, the hacker is in Japan — and there is a bit of a language barrier) but you we think the video of the thing really says it all — if not in so many words. Remember that guy who uber-hacked his Eee PC with a GPS, Bluetooth, draft-n WiFi, FM transmitter, SDHC card reader, modem, USB hub, 2GB RAM? Well, we got one more for him. This enterprising gentleman, fed up with suffering through the three-finger scroll of his Eee PC 901, integrated the trackball of his Apple Mighty Mouse into the netbook’s palm rest. Of course, this took some time and effort: in the end, the trackball leads had to be unsoldered from the mainboard, the trackball itself soldered to the mainboard, and the whole shebang installed under the surface of the netbook itself. But you know what? It works. That is, until the Mighty Mouse itself craps out — as they have been known to do. Still, it’s all in a day’s work for a heroic modder. Right? We won’t bother detailing just how sophisticated the system is that’s powering the wild whip you’re peering at above. We won’t bother mentioning just how many A123Systems batteries are installed, nor how intelligent the creator is. We won’t bother wearing our jealously on our sleeves. Homebuilt motion controllers may be a fairly common occurrence these days — especially with the Wiimote simplifying things considerably — but this so-called “PC VR Game Gun” takes a slightly different approach than most, and has the added benefit of a pitchman firmly committed to selling it as the greatest thing since ShamWow. As you can see above, the rig consists of a toy gun with an LCD screen attached to it, but the real secret is a Gyration Air Mouse mounted on top, which allows for some full, seemingly responsive motion-tracking in any PC game. To really finish things off, our fearless modder also ripped apart a gamepad and wired it up to the trigger in the gun, which turns out to be just the thing for playing F.E.A.R…. on the highest difficulty setting.
