Warner brings Pay-Per-View, Video on Demand to China, hopes people will actually pay for it

Piracy may run rampant in China, but that hasn’t stopped Warner Bros. from launching the country’s first national Pay-Per-View and Video on Demand service. Under the program, movies like Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 1 will be broadcast on You On Demand’s platform, and distributed to Chinese living rooms in cooperation with China Home Cinema — a branch of CCTV-6. According to You On Demand’s estimates, the service should be available in about three million homes by the end of this summer, and will have the potential to reach a full 200 million cable-equipped households. That’s certainly a huge market, and one that could provide some serious revenue — assuming, of course, that people are actually willing to pay for movies. Full PR after the break.

Sony, Panasonic, others to launch cross-platform e-book service, later this year

Don’t look now, but there’s some major synergy going on in Japan’s e-book market, now that Sony, Panasonic, Rakuten and Kinokuniya have all joined forces on a new digital quest. Today, the quartet of companies announced they’re working on a system that would allow users to purchase and read content across their respective e-readers, injecting the e-cosmos with a heavy dose of free love and good vibes. Under the new service, customers would be able to manage their downloads and browse bestsellers within a centralized web-based marketplace, regardless of the device they go to bed with every night. Because within this new universe, there would be no “mine,” “yours,” or “theirs” — all will be one and one will be all. The chieftains have already held powows with a handful of digital publishers, though they expect to have more friends around the campfire by the time the project launches later this year.

Bill Gates’ kids ‘aren’t deprived,’ they have Zunes

Bill Gates doesn’t give too many interviews, but the Daily Mail‘s Caroline Graham sure managed to get a lot out of him during their recent sitdown. Gates spent much of the time discussing his global health foundation, which, according to him, has become “full-time work for the rest of my life.” And, while he acknowledged that he’s still involved with Microsoft on a “part-time” basis, he reaffirmed that he has no desire to return to the throne. Does this mean he’s finally ready to lift his household’s notorious Apple embargo and allow his kids to own iPods? Not exactly:

“They have the Windows equivalent. They have a Zune music player, which is a great Windows portable player. They are not deprived children.”

Hear that? Bill’s kids aren’t in need! In fact, they even earn allowances and “do chores,” just like your kids. Sure, their pops may have billions of dollars stowed away under his mattress, but he says his offspring will only receive a “minuscule portion” of that fortune. Cue the violins.

Apple gives in to publishers, changes policy on in-app subscription prices

It looks like Apple has decided to make some pretty major changes to its App Store Review Guidelines — and, in particular, to its controversial in-app subscription policy. Under the new guidelines, publishers will be able to offer subscriptions to content outside of the App Store, as long as their apps don’t include a “buy” button that directs users away from Apple’s marketplace. Under the previous version of the policy, which was set to go into effect at the end of this month, app owners offering subscriptions outside of App Store were required to sell equivalent, in-app services at the “same price or less than it is offered outside the app,” while giving a 30 percent cut to Cupertino. Now, however, they can price these in-app subscriptions as they see fit, or circumvent the system altogether, by exclusively selling them outside of their apps. Apple will still receive 30 percent of the revenue generated from in-app subscriptions, but won’t get any money from purchases made outside of its domain. Theoretically, then, publishers would be able to offer in-app subscriptions at higher prices, in order to offset Apple’s share. This is how the new rules are worded:

11.13 Apps that link to external mechanisms for purchases or subscriptions to be used in the app, such as a “buy” button that goes to a web site to purchase a digital book, will be rejected

11.14 Apps can read or play approved content (specifically magazines, newspapers, books, audio, music, and video) that is subscribed to or purchased outside of the app, as long as there is no button or external link in the app to purchase the approved content. Apple will not receive any portion of the revenues for approved content that is subscribed to or purchased outside of the app.

It’s important to note, though, that Apple hasn’t made any changes to its policy on sharing user information. Publishers had been lobbying to gain access to subscribers’ credit card data and other personal information, which they see as critical to applying a TV Everywhere model to online publishing. With today’s concessions, though, these demands may become less insistent.

Financial Times web app debuts for iOS, more tablets to come (video)

It’s not often that we get the opportunity to mention the Financial Times and Playboy Magazine in the same sentence, but the two publications do have at least one thing in common: App Store aversion. Today, the FT launched a new, entirely web-based app, designed to circumvent iTunes (and Apple’s 30 percent revenue cut) altogether. The paper says its single, cross-platform app will allow it to issue updates with more frequency, while reaching an audience that extends far beyond the iOS realm. Though the subscription service is only available for iPhone and iPad users at the moment, versions catered for Galaxy Tab, Xoom and PlayBook users are coming soon. Perhaps more important, however, is what this move could mean for other publishers — many of whom haven’t taken too kindly to Apple’s subscription revenue and data-sharing practices. FT managing editor Rob Grimshaw says his paper has “no plans to pull out of any apps store,” but if the system proves viable, it could open the door for others to pursue their own, similarly HTML5-based ventures, in the hopes of retaining full revenues and access to subscriber information. We’ll have to wait and see whether this iTunes exodus ever materializes, but in the meantime, iOS users can hit the source link to enjoy the new app, available for free until July 14th. HTC sales in May reached $1.42 billion, more than double last year’s total

We’re seriously considering just reposting the same bit of text every time HTC’s earnings come up for discussion. The story never seems to change. Taiwan’s premier smartphone maker has once again blown away its performance from the previous year, having informed the Taiwan Stock Exchange that it tallied up T$40.62b ($1.42b) in consolidated sales for May 2011. That’s a neat chunk of change more than April’s T$38.73b and it also comfortably dwarfs last year’s May total of T$18.82b ($656m). There’s no breakdown of what devices are to credit for HTC’s ever-ascending revenues, but if you ask us, its future prosperity looks pretty good with the Sensation, EVO 3D, and a few tablet-shaped things lurking on the horizon.

RiTdisplay begins producing inexpensive a-Si AMOLED displays for smartphone makers

Sure, you’d expect to find an amorphous silicon backplane behind your LCD, but RiTdisplay has now begun producing a-Si AMOLED displays that, according to the company, are a world’s first. Developed in conjunction with Ignis Innovation, the 3.5-inch panel was first unveiled at last month’s SID Display Week, where it beamed images in 320 x 480 resolution. RiT says its a-Si-based AMOLED screens are relatively inexpensive to produce, potentially posing an alternative to its LTPS-backplaned brethren. The company has already begun manufacturing the displays for undisclosed smartphone makers, though there’s no word yet on when we can expect to see them pop up in commercial devices. But if the technology proves to be as cost-effective as RiT claims, it could go a long way toward patching up that AMOLED shortage — as long as you’re not too picky about resolution. Microsoft turns to crowdsourcing service to swat away patent trolls

We’ve seen the havoc that patent trolls can wreak on tech companies and Microsoft clearly wants no part of it. That’s why Ballmer & Co. have joined forces with Article One Partners — a New York-based research firm that crowdsources scientific expertise to figure out whether or not patented ideas or inventions are as innovative as they claim, based on prior art. By subscribing to Article One’s new Litigation Avoidance service, Redmond hopes “to reduce risk and reduce potential litigation cost” brought by nonpracticing entities (NPEs) — companies that collect thousands of patents, in the hopes that one may lay a golden egg. No word on how much the service will actually cost, but we’re guessing it’ll be worth at least a few legal headaches. Full presser after the break.
