Hasta La Gadget!

The folks from Clamcase stopped by our trailer this afternoon with some of the first finished products to roll off the assembly lines, and while we didn’t get to spend as much time as we would’ve liked, we got to take a ton of photos of this intriguing accessory that essentially converts your iPad into a netbook. In our few moments actually using the thing, we can say that it’s got a sturdy build quality and a decent keyboard; although there’s a fair amount of travel, it just feels a bit cheap. It’s also a bit cramped, but as the company rep pointed out to us, it’s as large as they could’ve made it without adding to the iPad’s already large bezel. We’ll update this post when a real review unit lands back on our trailer front door, but for now enjoy our photos below.

The LG Revolution, HTC Thunderbolt and Samsung’s SCH-i520 were the obvious stars of Verizon’s 4G LTE presser today, but a truckload of lesser devices are sure to delight end users when they ship later in the year. 4G mobile hotspots were on hand from both Novatel Wireless and Samsung (with the former working on both 3G and 4G networks), as were a pair of netbooks from HP and the LTE-enabled (and Hummingbird-powered) Galaxy Tab. The MiFi devices were decidedly thicker than our existing MiFi 2200 (shown left, above), but it’s a price we’d be willing to pay for the ability to surf on both of VZW’s networks. Gallery’s below for those seeking a closer look, and you should expect the whole lot to hit your local VZW store between March and July.

Among the many new-product announcements that have been released in the time leading up to CES, word on the web is that Dell will launch a new Latitude 2120 netbook at the Vegas convention next week. Apparently, the 2120 has specs identical to the previously available 2110, but gets double the computing power of the single core Intel Atom N470 chipset in its predecessor courtesy of a dual core N550 processor. While the upgraded processor is the big news, sources indicate the newest Latitude gets an optional Broadcom Crystal HD video accelerator, which should be a welcome addition for those students planning to watch March Madness during that 10AM lecture this spring semester. No word on price or availability, so interested parties will have to wait until the official launch for such details.

We weren’t actually expecting to see any Zacate-based machines until CES 2011 kicked off in earnest, but it looks as if MSI is hoping to snag a little wind from the sails of its competitors. In a small Taipei-based event, the outfit quietly snuck out a machine that we can only assume will become official in the coming days — the Wind U270 netbook is an 11.6-incher with a 1.6GHz Zacate processor, 4GB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive and no optical drive to speak of. Other specs include a VGA output, two USB 2.0 ports, a single USB 3.0 socket, a Kensington lock port, 4-in-1 card reader, Ethernet jack and an overly glossy 1366 x 768 resolution panel. Courtesy of Netbook News’ hands-on, we’ve spotted a traditional chiclet keyboard, a split mouse button (huzzah!) and a trackpad that may very well not exist if it were any smaller. MSI wasn’t about to spill any details on a ship date or price, but feel free to get yourself acquainted with the aesthetic in the video just past the break.

Believe it or not, it’s been almost a year since we caught a look at Lenovo’s IdeaPad U1 Hybrid, and while we’ve heard numerous times that the device and a new tablet part — the LePad — were still kicking, we’ve got some rock solid evidence this time around. Okay, we got some of the best evidence out there — pictures and early impressions of the China-bound 10.1-inch LePad tablet and its U1 dock / shell. Now, we don’t want to get your hopes up too much — we didn’t get to spend all that much time with either of the units and they were in very early form, but that didn’t stop us from playing around with both of them and taking some notes.
