ASUS Eee PC 1201N review

Six months ago netbooks all had 10-inch displays, fairly cramped keyboards, and couldn’t manage to play a 1080p video even if they trained with the best of marathoners. The world’s a lot different now: the King of Pop has passed away, the unemployment rate has dropped, and netbook manufacturers have realized 11- and 12-inch displays provide a more comfortable experience — especially when paired with more powerful hardware that adds multimedia prowess.

We’ll stop there with the Netbook 101, but looking at the past is necessary in realizing what a game-changer the ASUS Eee PC 1201N really is. The 1201N’s dual-core Intel Atom processor, NVIDIA Ion graphics, Windows 7 Home Premium, and 2GB of RAM make it the most powerful netbook to ever grace the purchase pages of Amazon. But does the $500 machine fix all the issues and frustrations we’ve ever had with netbooks when put to the test? Can it make us forget about cramped keyboards, strained eyes and sluggish video performance? Find out in our full review.

Marks & Spencer exclusive netbook offers lots of hyperbole, little substance

Marks & Spencer exclusive netbook offers lots of hyperbole, little substance

The status quo for the netbook has not shifted much since the Eee PC took over the world, but now Marks & Spencer has come along to revolutionize the segment with the Elonex-sourced MSNB-2009. Delivered using the company’s typically overstated advertising techniques, the machine is said to be “stylishly designed for life on the move,” “both portable and powerful,” and “style and sophistication” wrapped in a “glittery high-gloss finish.” What’s inside is rather less sparkly, the same ‘ol 1.6GHz Atom and 160GB HDD configuration that put us to sleep years ago. M&S calls this “an aspirational laptop for the modern lifestyle” and we totally agree: if you buy this you’ll aspire to buy something better. Available now in three shocking colors for “only” £279 — about $450.

ASUS Eee PC 1005P/PE with Atom N450 and 12.5-hour battery breaks cover

You do realize that all those Atom-based netbooks on sale for the holidays will be abandoned entirely in January right? Go ahead and pull the trigger for that “new” ViewSonic netbook if you must, just realized that you’ll be running last-gen hardware in less than a month if rumor, innuendo, and leaks all converge with the release of Pineview netbooks as expected. More details have appeared today at retailers listing specifications and pics for the unannounced ASUS EeePC model 1005P and 1005PE. Sporting the Eee PC Seashell design, we’re looking at a pair of 10-inch LED backlit displays with a 1,024 x 600 pixel resolution, Intel Atom N450 proc, 1GB DDR2-RAM, and a Windows 7 Starter Edition preload riding GMA 3150 graphics — a slightly faster version of Intel’s G31 based GMA 3100. The PE model sports a bigger 250GB hard disk and higher capacity 6-cell battery for a reported 12.5 hours of go-go juice thanks, in part, to the more efficient N450 CPU. Expect to see these Eees get official with price and launch date any day now.

Packard Bell Dot VR46 gets the endorsement of Valentino Rossi, nobody else

Wow. You know a product’s reached its tipping point when the only way to freshen it up is to go ultra-glossy and get a celebrity to spill some inspired paint upon it. Valentino Rossi, for those of you who don’t know, is a nine-time motorcycle racing champion, which means he’s not suffering from impaired vision and therefore lacks a valid excuse for the abomination above. Internal specs aren’t yet finalized, not that they really matter, though you’d be safe to look at Acer’s current lineup and cherrypick a suitable set of components. If you’ve been a bad boy or girl today and feel the need to be punished, there are two more snappy snaps of the VR46 after the break.

[Thanks, Sal]

Rumor: The Google Chrome Netbook

Google’s already said you’ll need to buy a Chrome OS machine if you want it officially, but if TechCrunch’s sources are right, they could be launching Google-branded hardware for the platform, much like they’re doing with the Nexus One.

Sure, you may’ve already downloaded an early Chrome OS build on your current machine, but unless you want it to be your sole platform, and running just the way Google intended, then you’ll need to buy the official hardware. Acer’s stated its intent to be first with a product release, presumably at the tail-end of next year, but ASUS, HP, Lenovo and Toshiba are also involved in the Chrome OS project too.

A “request for proposal” has already been issued to potential suppliers, such as those mentioned above, supposedly listing the specifications Google would like to see in that first netbook. Google is believed to be working with just the one manufacturer, to build the ideal netbook. TechCrunch’s sources are claiming they’ll be 3G-embedded, and quite possibly subsidized by a carrier.

Michael Arrington, editorializing at this point, goes on to say that:

“I’d be willing to bet one of our writers’ right hands that it’s ARM [as opposed to an Intel Atom processor]. And I’d even go out on a limb and suggest that they may very well be targeting Nvidia’s Tegra line.”

Adobe, Freescale, Qualcomm and Texas Instruments are the other parties already working with on the Google Chrome OS project, so presumably the netbook will contain some components from them as well.

So, which company do we think Google will choose in this all-important talent show? Acer, ASUS, HP, Lenovo or Toshiba, or even someone else? ASUS obviously has strong heritage with netbooks, thanks to inventing the market for it back in 2007, but Acer launched the first Android-powered netbook. HP, Lenovo and Toshiba have all produced some solid netbooks in their time, but haven’t quite measured up to Acer and ASUS’ success just yet. [TechCrunch]

ViewSonic VNB102 netbook gets price, release date, a handful of pretty renders

If you were waiting for ViewSonic to finally put out a netbook, the wait is over. If you weren’t, we don’t blame you — we weren’t either. Things are pretty much as you were expecting: 10-inch display, Windows 7, Intel Atom N270 CPU, 1GB memory, 160GB hard drive, a six cell battery, and 802.11b/g WiFi. This bad boy can be yours for the MSRP of $399. Intrigued? Hit up the gallery below of fly past the break for some stunning PR.

Ultrathin LG XNote LGX30 surfaces at FCC rockin’ Windows 7

Looks like Dell isn’t the only one who knows how to produce an ultrathin laptop, as LG’s latest concoction has just landed at the always-revealed database of the FCC. The XNote LGX30 (not to be confused with the Ion-based X30) is an 11.6-inch netbook with a 1,366 x 768 resolution panel, solid state drive, integrated webcam, Bluetooth, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, a multicard reader, GMA500 graphics set and a 3-cell battery. The machine weighs just 1.74 pounds and is based on some sort of Atom CPU, and as expected, it’s Windows 7 running the show. We’re hoping to hear a lot more about this thing when CES rolls around, but till then, feel free to peruse the user guide down there in the source link. It’s a riveting read, we tell ya.

Nokia Booklet 3G slips to $199 on contract ‘through the holidays’

Few people were debating that the $299 on contract price for Nokia’s Atom-powered Booklet 3G was a bit steep, but now it has fallen more in line with its closest competition thanks to a price drop at Best Buy Mobile. From December 13th “through the holidays,” the Windows 7-packin’ machine (which we just recently reviewed) will be available for $199.99 with a two-year AT&T Data Connect plan. Of course, there’s a good chance you’ll regret the decision to jump on this when the next-generation Atom hits at CES (which is happening, right Intel?), but hey, Santa’s got to do what Santa’s got to do.

[Thanks, Hary]

Packard Bell said to be planning color e-reader for late next year, convertible tablet too

Packard Bell said to be planning color e-reader for late next year, convertible tablet too

The huge popularity of netbooks caught most manufacturers by surprise, and some of those who joined the party late definitely missed out on the most bacony of hors d’œuvres. Now many are eager to sink their teeth into the next two “big things,” e-readers and tablets, and according to Actualitte Packard Bell has one of each coming next year. First up will be an 11.6-inch convertible netbook arriving in February, probably a slightly re-styled version of the Acer 1820PT, which will apparently launch with a netbook-specific content distribution system to push music and movies to its tiny little hard drive. More interesting is word of a color e-reader said to come sometime later in the year. No other details are known, leaving us to wonder who will provide the screen. Samsung, Bridgestone, Plastic Logic, and PVI are all planning to launch color products next year, meaning PB will have plenty of options — assuming it doesn’t just slap a traditional LCD in there and call it a day. That’d be a shame.

Kohjinsha DZ gets unboxed and stretched out

It’s been a good while since we’ve seen an unboxing as thorough as this, even if the quality of the recording could be better. The chaps over at Wow Pow have sourced one of them dual-screen Kohjinsha DZ netbooks, which have had us intrigued since we saw them at CEATEC earlier this year. What we find from their cardboard adventuring is that the DZ comes with a LiteOn charger, a 6-cell 5,200mAh battery with endurance rated at four hours (though they’ve suggested that might be for only one screen), a 1Seg tuner that works only in Japan, and a multitouch trackpad. Powered by a 1.6GHz AMD Neo and 4 gigs of RAM, this machine definitely wants to escape the netbook tag, and its neat inclusion of an internal USB port intended for wireless connectivity dongles gives it another unorthodox selling point. Go beyond the break to see its de-boxing.
