Nokia’s FourSquare-enabled vending machine offers free smartphones, Butterfingers (video)

Sure, it’s one thing to hit up the vending machine at work to get your Doritos fix, but free gifts? That’s exactly what Nokia‘s doing at the Skypark in Glasgow for the city’s Social Media Week with the help of 1000heads. Dubbed the “Nokia Gift Machine,” it allows event attendees to obtain one free gift per day including candy from the US of A, Nokia accessories and even smartphones for a lucky few. All it takes is a quick FourSquare check-in with #NokiaConnects followed by a share over Twitter, and a goodie-filled tube will be yours for the taking. It’ll only be in place until the 23rd, so if you’re there and haven’t given it whirl, consider this a quick heads-up from your friends at Engadget. Plus, who doesn’t love getting awesome stuff for free? Exactly. Full details in the PR past the break.

Microsoft boots Windows Phone manager following mini-review of Nokia’s Mango handset

The man who previously led the development of IE Mobile for Windows Phone is no longer with Microsoft, whose termination followed a series of tweets regarding one of Nokia’s unreleased Mango handsets. A representative of Ballmer & Co. has confirmed to us “that Joe Marini no longer works at Microsoft,” and while the company refuses to discuss the details of his termination, you be the judge. In his first tweet, Mr. Marini expressed glowing enthusiasm for the device, having called it one of Nokia’s slickest ever. Then, however, he went on to give the phone an “8” (to summarize his 144 character review), criticize the camera as being good, but not great, and bemoan its screen size. Oops. If anything, unbridled enthusiasm is encouraged at Microsoft (just think back to Steve Ballmer’s monkey dance if you had any doubt), but when sheer excitement erupts into stunning frankness regarding unreleased products from partner companies, perhaps this ex-Microsoftee should have kept his thoughts offline. We wish you luck, Joe, but next time, just remember that review scores are a relic of the past. Instead, just let the words speak for themselves.

Nokia now shipping 700 and 701 to retailers, all our Symbian Belle are belong to us

The above tweet says it all, folks — the Nokia 700 and 701, two of the three Symbian Belle devices promised for a Q3 release last month, are shipping out to various retailers in just enough time to hit the deadline. As with many 140-character messages, it leaves us in wont for more information; we suppose, though, that most of the finer details were already given to us at the devices’ unveiling, and now it’s just up to the individual retailers to provide any missing pieces (if any) that remain. All that’s left to do is decide on a suitable outlet, right?

Brain scanner app lets you show off your smarts on-the-go

Forget learning how to open a champagne bottle with a saber, because this smartphone brain scanner probably has it beat for coolest party trick ever. After you pull out that 14-channel EEG headset you have lying around, all you need to do is attach the probes to your date’s dome piece to measure his or her neural activity on your Nokia N900. The app then goes to work, taking binary data and reconstructing it on screen in 3D. The result? A new way to elimi-date Match.com candidates based on the real-time image of his or her melon. We can’t promise it’ll get you a second date, but we can give you a glimpse of the app in action after the break.

[Thanks, arek]

Nokia: first Windows Phones still shipping by end of year

Somewhere in the world, sometime between October 1st and December 31st, somebody will be able to purchase a Nokia-branded Windows Phone. Exactly where, when, or who is still in question. But Nokia at least took to the Twittersphere to reassure the masses that the company is still aiming to release a Windows Phone by the end of the year, though we likely won’t be seeing it ship in large volumes until early next year. Curiously enough, Nokia Australia’s Twitter account was included within the short message, which makes us wonder if they’re tossing a little clue our way. We’re hoping to have another entry on our Black Friday shopping list — not that it’s short as it is, of course.

Ballmer: Windows Phones aren’t selling very well, but we’re not worried

Microsoft’s Steve Ballmer was his usual frank self when he met financial analysts yesterday, admitting that the world isn’t yet as keen on Windows Phone as he’d hoped. To be precise, AllThingsD reported him as saying: “We haven’t sold quite as many as I would have liked in the first year.” His cunning plan? Well, that’s easy: make it all Nokia’s problem. Or, as he put it: “With Nokia we have a dedicated hardware partner that is all-in on Windows Phones.” Indeed, the Finnish manufacturer has now staked far more than Microsoft on the success of this “third ecosystem” and, if its imminent Mango handsets fail to turn things around, we may eventually see Stephen Elop standing behind that silent cash register.

Looks like Espoo’s making good on its earlier promise: Nokia’s elusive N9 is now up for preorder on Australia’s Harvey Norman. Offered in 16GB and 64GB variants, all that stands between you and your future Harmattan totin’ self is $829 AUD (around $865). Those who pre-order from the retailer before September 12th will also receive Nokia’s BH-505 NFC Bluetooth headset gratis. Sony launches party pack of noise-cancelling headphones, your personal discotheque awaits

To the joy and delight of babysitters everywhere, Sony announced a boatload of new noise-cancelling headphones and earbuds to keep you sane in loud situations. Leading the pack are the $200, on-ear active / passive MDR-NC200D headphones, which have a 40mm drivers in each ear, 22-hour battery and folding design. For $150, users wanting portability can cop the smaller in-ear MDR-NC100Ds, which have a lower price tag and 13.5mm drivers. Both headphones feature Sony’s “Artificial Intelligence Noise-Cancelling” technology, which claims to automatically reduce ambient noise by around 98.2 percent — because you know, precision matters.

Also launching today are two new smartphone headsets — the $40 in-ear DR-EX14VP and the $60 DR-XB23VP earbuds — with connectivity to Android, iPhone and BlackBerry phones, as well as Sony Ericsson, Nokia and other phones thanks to an included compatibility cord. Pulling up the rear are the new iPhone control headsets — the $60 DR-XB22iP in-ear silicone hybrids, the $40 DR-EX61iP earbuds and the $150 “over-the-head” DR-ZX701iP. Currently accepting pre-orders, the headphones will be available for purchase sometime in October — just in time to tune out the doorbell this Halloween. Check out the full PR after the break.

Unannounced Nokia Symbian Belle handset is a mysterious phone within a phone (video)

Half the fun of trade shows is when unexpected beans get spilled at PR stalls and here, my dear Watson, we have another intriguing example. A TechBlog.gr pundit picked up a new Nokia 700 at IFA and was confronted with a stored promo video depicting a totally different and unfamiliar high-end handset. It looks slightly curved like the N9, runs the latest version of Symbian and possesses a rather attractive edge-to-edge LCD. The main gist of the promo is a wireless platform called Air Cloud, which apparently allows the phone to pair up with an audio system via NFC. Word on the street is this could be the N8’s successor — the so-called 801 — but there’s not a great many clues to back that up. In any case, check out the video after the break and savor that fleeting sense of infinite regress.

Update: Sherlock may have run away with himself slightly here. Mobiflip.de reckons it got a comment from someone at Nokia who said the phone is just a concept, made for the purpose of illustrating Air Cloud. Guess that edge-to-edge screen was too good to be true.

Nokia wants you to create its next iconic ringtone, if you have what it takes

On the streets, in crowded restaurants, and even in movies, you’ve likely heard the same song ad nauseam for the last seventeen years: the rockin’ default ringtone used on virtually every Nokia device since 1994. And while it’s evolved over the years, Espoo’s always taken upon itself to choose the next version of the iconic tune. For the next iteration, however, the company is leaving it up to you to be the creative genius, and is offering a reward of $10,000 for the best one. Five submissions will be chosen as runner-ups, each getting their entry offered in the Ovi store as well as a smaller cash prize for their efforts. So if you’ve always wanted to hear your own creation blasting out of millions of phones each and every day, now’s your chance — you have until October 2nd to get that spark of musical innovation.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
