Nokia N8 to launch on August 25 in UK, according to local store employee

As official confirmations go, this is the weakest kind. A Nokia store employee has informed Pocket-lint that the N8 hero device we’ve all been waiting for will be launching in the Queen’s backyard on Wednesday, August 25. That’s only a day off from the August 24 tip that we had and definitely seems to narrow down the release window, but let’s retain our signature skepticism. Until one of Nokia’s higher-ups or their PR team busts out an official release date, we’re still dealing with speculative information. Then again, if you wanna book that week of August off from work, we’d totally understand.

Foxconn raising wages, relocating 20 percent of Shenzhen workers closer to home (updated)

After a string of highly localized suicides at Foxconn’s manufacturing campus captured the world’s attention — again — the company has decided to increase worker wages by about 20 percent. Foxconn says that the pay raise had been planned for some time but did not say when it would be implemented. Mind you, a 20% bump in the third quarter is not unusual as Foxconn ramps up production for the holidays. In fact, Foxconn has given raises by as much as 50% in the past according to Vincent Chen, analyst at Yuanta Securities in Taipei. At the moment, Foxconn entry-level line workers are paid 900 yuan (about $131.80) per month — remuneration that exceeds the local minimum wage in the area. And that’s before bonuses and that oh-so tempting overtime pay are factored in. It’s also worth noting that Foxconn is said by a factory worker surnamed Wang, to pay 100,000 yuan (about 10 times a worker’s annual base salary) to families of suicide victims — a sum he says has tempted some to their death.

Update: CEO Terry Guo is being quoted as saying that Foxconn plans to relocate some facilities and about a fifth of its Shenzhen workforce (that’s about 80,000 people based on the 400k estimates tossed around) to western parts of China so that the workers can be closer to their families. Meanwhile, Sony, Nokia, and Nintendo, all Foxconn customers, have joined Apple, Dell, and HP in expressing their public concern over the working conditions in Foxconn.

Nokia sells just 100,000 N900s after first five months: so? (updated: more like 5 weeks)

Look, the N900 might be sitting at the top of Nokia’s handset pyramid in terms of capabilities, but as we’ve said all along, the N900 is not a mass-market device. Nokia’s been very clear that the N900 was launched as a means to strengthen its Maemo development community (on the path to MeeGo we now know). And by all accounts, it’s done just that while winning a rabid fanbase of nerds in the process. Nevertheless, Reuters uses Gartner’s estimate of less than 100,000 units sold in the device’s first five months as proof that Nokia can’t mount a challenge to RIM and Apple. True the numbers are paltry compared to the 8.75 million iPhones Apple sold from January to March, but a more apt comparison might be the oft noted Nexus One sales that reached just 135k units moved after 74 days. Regardless, in its defense, Alberto Torres, head of Nokia’s solutions business said that “Sales have substantially exceeded expectations.” So yeah, Nokia has problems, but the N900 isn’t wasn’t one of them.

Update: While Nokia doesn’t normally give out detailed sales figures per device, we’ve just been told that more than 100,000 N900s sold in the first five weeks — not months — globally.

MeeGo 1.0 demoed on MSI netbook, looks shockingly stupendous (video)

You’ve already watched pre-release versions of MeeGo fly around on a number of netbooks, but if you’re still wondering if it’s worth your while to install v1.0 on your own machine, you owe it to yourself to have a look at the video posted after the break. The fine folks over at Liliputing have installed the fresh-out-of-the-lab operating system onto their MSI netbook in order to showcase some of the features, and frankly, we’re duly impressed by what we’re seeing. It’s clearly light on its feet, with an Expose-like shifting of screens happening at speeds which we previously only dreamed of seeing on an Atom-based rig. We can’t say the rest of the world is really ready to ditch Windows 7 for something as niche as this, but judging by this vid, you should probably give it a whirl. What’s to lose, right?

P.S. – Phoronix was able to run the new OS through the benchmark gauntlet, and it certainly showed up Ubuntu.

[Thanks, Rafael]

Nokia N8 gets first official carrier in Vodafone UK

Expect this to be the first of many similar announcements as Nokia works out carrier agreements for its new flagship phone. Vodafone’s always informative Coming Soon page has today been updated with the N8, touting its “incredible” camera, social features, and personalization options. Nothing resoundingly new or informative then, but at least you’ll know where to look come late August.

[Thanks, Moominking]

Symbian^3 to launch on non-Nokia handset, courtesy of ‘Asian vendor’

Well, here’s a bit of thunder theft for you. Nokia’s N8 launch is still firmly wedged in Q3 2010, but according to Symbian Foundation Executive Director Lee Williams, other handset makers are not going to hang around and wait for it to be the vanguard Symbian^3 device. Instead, says Lee, the first phone with the overhauled software will be provided by an unnamed Asian vendor — we’re thinking LG or Samsung, with the latter being more likely as it has more history with Symbian. This seems to be mostly on account of the new OS being pretty much ready for market right now, so whoever’s bringing the goods should be doing so in the very near future.

MeeGo 1.0 for netbooks and N900 now available to download

You’ve seen it teased, and now it’s time to shelve whatever you had planned for this evening (or morning, depending on your current coordinates) and slap the first bona fide 1.x MeeGo release onto whatever device you’ve got handy. As of right now, MeeGo v1.0 for Netbooks and v1.0 for Nokia N900 are available for download, with the former supporting Atom-based machines and the latter supporting… well, we’ll let you take a stab there. The API that’s being released includes Qt 4.6, and while the current SDK is tailored for netbooks, the next version — slated to hit devs in June — will support “touch-based devices, such as handsets and tablets.” We’re also told that v1.1 will be outed in October, with the development tree already being open. We’re certainly digging the layout shown here at a glance, but why not give that source link a visit and find out how it suits you in real life? We heard Snooki totally digs it, too.

[Thanks, Ernst]

Apple, Dell, and HP comment on suicides as Foxconn CEO shows off the pool

On an 84-degree day (29 C) at a Chinese factory housing some 400,000 workers, at least 2 of them were enjoying the Foxconn swimming pool. We know this because the notoriously secretive Foxconn CEO, Terry Gou, was showing off some of the workers’ facilities to the press to assure the world that he was not operating a sweatshop. Foxconn has received a great deal of attention lately after a rash of suicide attempts this year left 2 workers seriously injured and 9 people dead. While these numbers are relatively low compared to World Health Organization data showing a suicide rate of about 14 deaths per 100,000 Chinese, Foxconn contends that there were only one or two suicides a year previously at its Shenzhen factories. Today Gou announced that Foxconn has 70 psychiatrists and 100 voluntary workers trained to help prevent suicide. Great, problem solved.

As you probably know, Foxconn is behind the assembly of many major consumer electronics brands including HP, Nokia, Dell, and Apple — the latter two have come out with statements expressing their respective concern. Apple had this to say:

“We are saddened and upset by the recent suicides at Foxconn. We’re in direct contact with Foxconn senior management and we believe they are taking this matter very seriously. A team from Apple is independently evaluating the steps they are taking to address these tragic events and we will continue our ongoing inspections of the facilities where our products are made.”

And Dell this:

“We expect our suppliers to employ the same high standards we do in our own facilities. We enforce these standards through a variety of tools, including the Electronics Industry code of conduct, business reviews with suppliers, self-assessments and audits.”

During today’s press event, Tang Wenying, a young Foxconn line supervisor said, “This is a good place to work because they treat us better than many (other) Chinese factories.” And that may be the most worrisome aspect of this: Foxconn, by all accounts, provides some of the best conditions for the Chinese workers it employs. What does that say about the anonymous (and thus, invisible) chain of small suppliers and secondary assembly facilities nobody reads about?

Update: HP says that it is also investigating “the Foxconn practices that may be associated with these tragic events.”

Nokia’s Instant Community lets you socialize with those around you without actually meeting them (video)

Nokia's Instant Community lets you socialize with those around you without actually meeting them (video)

Talking to people is hard, and talking to strangers? That’s, like, really hard. Nokia has a better way: the Nokia Instant Community. It relies on ad-hoc WiFi connections from (Finnish) smartphones to create dynamic communities into which people can join. Once connected, trendy but introverted festival-goers can chat, exchange photos, and even download each other’s bootlegs of the very show they’re attending! It’s the work of the Nokia Research Center along with Tampere University of Technology, and while it’s just a prototype at this point, you can get the full walkthrough after the break — the full, monotone walkthrough.

Nokia updates N900 to version 1.2 in UK, closes door on MeeGo

You’ve overclocked it and hacked it to run OS X and Android, now you can return your N900 to its native Maemo 5 OS with the launch of a version 1.2 software update. The V10.2010.19-1 bump now available in the UK (global on Wednesday) packs several enhancements including face-to-face video calling, improved Ovi Maps, and a better email experience with bundled Facebook IM Chat and the ability to accept or decline event invitations from the inbox. You’ll also see a number of new games when the Ovi Store switches over on Thursday.

And after much speculation, Nokia’s also admitting that MeeGo will not be officially supported on the N900 once the Intel / Nokia OS is device ready. Nokia will continue to support the core Maemo OS, however, as demonstrated by today’s update. Regardless, we’re sure that the N900’s active fan-base will deliver a MeeGo update outside of official channels, especially since the N900 is already being used as a platform for ARM-based MeeGo development.

[Thanks, Pasu]
