Hasta La Gadget!

It took a while, but that O2-exclusive (for the UK) white Xperia Play is finally with us. Earlier this month, the UK carrier had promised to deliver the Play in June, but evidently things have gone better than expected, as we now see “in stock” signage next to both the black and white models of Sony Ericsson’s gaming phone. Pricing is identical for both color variants, starting at “free” when attached to expensive (£34 per month) two-year contracts and peaking at £430 ($702) on pre-pay deals. O2 also throws in a matching multimedia dock plus three bonus games to sweeten the deal. We’re guessing that Android 2.3.3 update that Sony Ericsson just rolled out for the Xperia Play might finally have allayed O2’s software concerns, which has allowed it to now start selling the device in earnest.

Oh, woe is us. Or, to be more precise, woe is us if we wanted the Xperia Play on the UK’s O2 network on the day of its release, April 1st. The British carrier has been candid in admitting it found software bugs on the Play and is holding back release of the gamer-friendly device until those have been ironed out. We appreciate its effort in “testing the phone non-stop for weeks” and its reluctance to grab a quick buck by releasing imperfectly baked goods, but a major question remains — if this isn’t an O2-specific software problem, and we’ve heard no peep of O2 customizing the Android 2.3 build on the Play, why are no other carriers signaling a similar delay? Vodafone is still aiming to deliver UK pre-orders by April 5th and there seems to be no indication of flawed software from others. Only thing we can think of, given that O2 has the white Xperia Play exclusive, is that the white phone curse has struck again.

Update: Here’s what Sony Ericsson has to say on the matter:

“Sony Ericsson Xperia[TM] PLAY will be launching on 1st April across all UK mobile operator partners except for O2, who have decided to prolong the testing period in order to ensure that the software meets the requirements of its procedures. Sony Ericsson will be workingwith O2 over the next couple of weeks to expedite the process and ensure that O2 customers can soon join consumers across the UK in being able to enjoy the world’s first PlayStation certified smartphone.”

In spite of HP’s strong assurances to the contrary, the Palm Pre Plus is actually going to give users the option to ride into webOS 2.x territory. As we speculated yesterday, O2 Germany Pre Plus owners can now download a new firmware package for their slider handsets, which will work its magic and update them to version 2.1 of HP’s magnificent software. The company has been actively discouraging users and programmers from pairing the older hardware with the latest software, so we can’t promise it’ll be a bump-free ride for all upgraders, but having the option is all people have been asking for and now it’s there — and by “there” we mean the source link below.

Now that the Xperia Play is finally official ahead of a full unveiling at MWC next week, carriers are ready to hop on the bandwagon — or at least one is: O2 in the UK. Other than a brief tweet, no other details are given at this point, though the quick support of a major European carrier has to be good news for Sony Ericsson considering that device subsidies are no longer a sure thing… and without question, the Play represents something of a Hail Mary for one of the most badly bruised and beaten titans of the wireless industry. Pricing on contract is, of course, a huge open question — as is North American support — but hopefully all will be revealed on the 13th.

Update: Pocket-lint says it can “exclusively confirm” that Vodafone will be getting the phone as well, suggesting that Sony Ericsson may not be pursuing exclusivity periods here — at least, not in the UK.

Only a handful of Muni-Fi projects ended in anything greater than eternal tears here in the States, but hopefully O2’s up for the challenge across the pond. The UK carrier just announced its intentions to “refine the WiFi landscape” in its home nation by launching O2 WiFi, with a raft of “premium hotspots” to be rolled out and managed by key venue owners. As of now, it’s hard to pinpoint who exactly will begin hosting O2’s routers, but the key part is this: they’ll be open for all customers to access for free, no matter which mobile or broadband provider they are with. Making no bones about who it’s coming after, the operator has affirmed its intentions to “at least double the number of premium hotspots currently offered by BT Openzone and The Cloud combined by 2013,” with the rollout to begin as early as today and continue for as long as it takes. ‘Course, doubling up The Cloud may take a little more work given that Sky just picked it up for an undisclosed sum, but hey, we’re sure every Briton in existence would just love to see these two duke it out for WiFi supremacy.
