Screen Grabs: Pretty Little Liars is TV’s newest home to egregious product placement (video)

Scene: Impossibly mature high school “girls” mingling in front of a locker. Action!

Bitter Barbie: “What are you doing? Is that a new phone?”
Bland Barbie: “Yeah, I’m checking my Kin. I’ll just write on Hannah’s wall from here.”

End scene.

Yes, ABC’s new Pretty Little Liars show is the future of American television, where entertainment morphs into infotainment and bakes the minds of an entire generation into a lovely pie of corporate servitude. We blame TiVo. Oh, and just because Palm quit making creepy commercials doesn’t mean that they’ve given up on promoting its Pre to women. Looks like Roger McNamee was right about that backside mirror’s appeal. See what we mean in the PLL episode 3 embeds posted after the break.

[Thanks, Dave]

Palm Pre breaks the 1GHz barrier with insane custom kernel

If you own a Pre, you like to tempt fate, and you don’t faint at the mere thought of your phone melting into a nondescript heap of plastic and silicon, have we got some exciting news for you: some crazy dude with a death wish has somehow eked an honest gigahertz out of the Pre’s OMAP3430 processor that normally plods along at 600MHz. Of course, this isn’t the first time the phone’s been overclocked, but traditionally, those overclocks have topped out around 800MHz — so if you need serious speed and don’t mind nuking your battery at a record pace, this so-called “F105 Thunderchief” kernel project is one that you’re going to want to keep an eye on. The project’s owner says “do not install this if you like your phone,” so… you know, proceed with extreme caution, especially considering that your warranty’s probably going to dry up as fast as your battery. Follow the break for the blood-curdling action on video.

SIM unlock now available for AT&T Palm Pre Plus

The method ain’t new — it’s the same jictechnology developers offering the same code over at NextGenServer — but it will yield different results when used on the latest and greatest webOS device. Yep, that Palm Pre unlock that enabled international GSM Pre units to work on AT&T, Telus and T-Mobile is now officially certified for use on AT&T’s own Palm Pre Plus. That means your shiny new smartphone can now hop onto T-Mobile and Telus networks with a functioning SIM card from either carrier, but unlike other unlocks, this one will cost you $35.79. Or, you know, you could pick up Verizon’s Pre Plus, nab a free mobile hotspot along the way, and pocket an old Nokia candybar for those overseas jaunts — your call, broseph.

webOS App Catalog, Palm Developer Center down leaving ‘install failed’ messages in their wake

Just a day before the Pre Plus launches on AT&T, current Palm owners are experiencing all kinds of problems related to the App Store and their Palm Profiles. Reports indicate the problems started last night, since then users haven’t been able to download new apps or update existing ones from the catalog, while those unlucky enough to have tried a reset have had trouble signing back into their Palm profile in the cloud, and have lost some information like call logs and had to resync their various accounts in webOS. The Palm Developer Website is also down, tossing a “back in a few hours” sign in the window and going out for a few afternoon mimosas. For now, PreCentral posters recommend taking the device off of network time and resetting it to any day prior to today which will allow apps to install and update without issue. A post on the official Palm blog indicates things should be back to normal “soon” so AT&T customers can hopefully avoid any date/time trickery just to get their Foursquare checkins going.

Update: Palm says everything should be back to normal. Phew. Thanks, Marcio!

[Thanks, William]

ATT Unveils GSM Palm Pre, $149.99 on May 16th

Palm_Pre_AT&T.jpg

AT&T announced on its Facebook page that the Palm Pre Plus will hit retail stores and online on May 16th for $149.99 after contract and rebates.
This marks the first time the Palm Pre will be available in a GSM version, as the two prior models were both CDMA (Palm Pre on Sprint, and Palm Pre Plus on Verizon).
The Pre continues to be one of the best smartphones on the market, thanks to its Cortex A8 processor and slick webOS, and despite Palm’s troubles (which will hopefully be over soon, now that HP bought ’em out).
AT&T also said that anyone buying a Pre in AT&T retail stores will get a free Palm Touchstone charging dock.

Verizon Palm Pre Plus drops to $30 on contract

Looks like Verizon is having a bit of a blowout on the Palm Pre Plus: it’s fallen to just $30 on a two-year contract. That’s the same price as Big Red’s Pixi Plus and a pretty substantial discount over Sprint and AT&T, both of which will charge you $149 — and man, AT&T hasn’t even started selling the thing yet, so someone’s going to look awful silly on launch day. No word on whether this cut-rate pricing will last or whether the Pixi Plus will fall to free, but if you’re looking for a cheap way to get in on the future of HP, well, now’s your chance.

Giz Explains: How Multitasking Works on a Phone [Giz Explains]

WebOS 1.4.1.1 now available for Verizon subscribers

Hardly the most exciting Palm news you’re gonna hear this week, but the company that still owns itself for the time being has just updated its WebOS software on Verizon to the extremely granular version 1.4.1.1. The helpful changelog informs us there are no new apps, but pinch-zoom now works correctly in Doc and PDF views, a lag in the camera shutter sound has been rectified, and forwarding videos uploaded to YouTube on to your friends via email has also been made to work as it should. The most important fix of all, though, is to a keyboard input issue whereby a single key press would generate a letter twice — both Pre Central and one of our readers report that this problem appears to have been consigned to the past. Good stuff, now let’s see it go global, shall we?

[Thanks, subzero and Sam F.]

Palm and AT&T give the Pre Plus (and WebOS) an ad we can all agree is not completely terrible

Hey, hey, look at this! A short, sweet Palm Pre Plus ad that shows off the phone’s innovative UI, its ability to multitask, and its 3D gaming — you know, all the great stuff it can do. This is just what pretty much everyone who’s ever had the misfortune of seeing the creepy Palm lady or the Verizon “Mom” ads has been desperately seeking. Sure, it’s taken a over a year for a half-decent ad, and sure, we’ve only seen this one on the web thus far, but we’re hoping to see this one make it to real, live TV, too — because even if it’s a little boring and the music kinda stinks, it’s better than the other options.

Palm CEO: We Can Survive as an Independent Company

palmlogo.jpgRecent history hasn’t been kind to Palm. The dynamic webOS and hardware such as the Pre and Pixi haven’t done much to improve the company’s financial outlook. Palm CEO Jon Rubenstein has maintained a positive financial outlook nonetheless.

In a recent interview, Rubenstein admitted that his company would be open to licensing webOS to other hardware manufacturers. Palm would even be open to considering takeovers, should things turn out that way. Ultimately, however, Rubenstein said he believes that Palm is capable of surviving without such outside influence.

“I believe Palm can survive as an independent company,” Rubenstein said in the interview. “We have a plan that gets us to profitability.”
