Dolphin Hates iPads

dolphin_toughbook.jpg

I don’t know how much stock you take in the opinions of cetaceans–if
you’re a Douglas Adams disciple, for example, odds are that you take their
opinions pretty seriously. And while he doesn’t claim to speak for a whole
species, Merlin the dolphin, a resident of Puerto Aventuras in Mexico, has come
down pretty firmly on the whole tablet debate.

Put simply, Merlin doesn’t care for the iPad.

The bottlenose had been using Apples tablet since June, identifying objects
on the screen by touching them with his nose, as part of the SpeakDolphin
project, an attempt to bridge the communication gap between dolphins and
mankind.

Merlin’s trainers decided to switch things up recent, seeing
which tablet the sea mammal prefers. The answer, as it turns out, is the
Panasonic Toughbook.

“He was more comfortable with the Toughbook experience,
which offered greater screen visibility and sensitivity,” DolphinSpeak
president Jack Kassewitz told the press. “We were able to hold the Toughbook
notebooks closer to the water and our bodies, which makes the dolphin more
comfortable and willing to interact and learn.”

The iPad may have the human market cornered at the moment,
but Panasonic has just opened up an entirely untapped demographic.

Panasonic GF2 rumored to be announced this week, released early 2011

There still isn’t much in the way of actual details or pictures, but 4/3 Rumors is reporting that it’s heard from sources who say the Panasonic GF2 Micro Four Thirds camera (successor to the GF1) will be announced as soon as next week. What’s more, those same sources say that the camera will be the smallest mirrorless camera to date, and that it will use the Panasonic G2 12-megapixel sensor. That rumor is further backed up by a new listing for a GF2 at the Korean Radio Research Agency, although that unfortunately doesn’t provide any details beyond the name. You might not want to ditch your GF1 just yet, though — while camera will supposedly be announced next week, it apparently won’t actually be released until sometime early next year.

Panasonic’s Power Loader Light slims down, stays out of fights with aliens

Panasonic’s full-size Power Loader exoskeleton certainly has its place, but there are times when giant freaking robots arms might be considered overkill. Thankfully, Panasonic (or more specifically, its Activelink subsidiary) has considered such situations, and has now come out with its streamlined Power Loader Light (or PLL). As you can see, this model eschews the robot arms altogether, but it makes use of the same direct force feedback system that’s able to predict your leg movements and increase your leg strength by up 40 kilograms. Of course, even the Light version is still a bit out of reach for everyday use — it will initially cost around $223,000, but Panasonic is offering a grant program to potential developers that would cut the price in half.

Panasonic’s DMR-BF200 stuffs hard drive and Blu-ray burner into one tiny, magical box

And this, friends, is why Japan is a marvelous place. Panasonic has just removed the wraps from its new DIGA DMR-BF200, which is being hailed as the planet’s smallest Blu-ray recorder. For all intents and purposes, this is simply an external hard drive with a slot-loading Blu-ray burner baked in, but there’s plenty more on the inside to pay attention to. It’ll stream DLNA content, interface with your other VIERA Link equipment, output content via HDMI and even access acTVila (a Japanese video-on-demand service). Users can also toss in an SD card for watching flicks stored on more portable media, and most anything housed on the 320GB internal hard drive can be toasted on BD-R/RE for playback elsewhere. It should be noted, however, that neither BDXL nor Blu-ray 3D are supported, but those still keenly interested can find it on November 15th for ¥70,000 ($861) in black or white.

Panasonic confirms December 27 ship date, $4,995 price for AG-AF100 Micro Four Thirds video camera

The headline pretty much says it all here — Panasonic has now finally cleared up that its AG-AF100 Micro Four Thirds video camera will begin shipping on December 27th, and pack a suitably professional price tag of $4,995. In case you’ve forgotten about it since it’s debut way back in April, the camera offers a slew of fairly high-end features including native 1080/24p recording, variable frame rates, and professional audio capabilities — and, while $5,000 isn’t exactly cheap, it will let you keep costs down somewhat by supporting a whole range of standard Micro Four Thirds lenses, filters and adapters. Head on past the break for the complete press release.

Panasonic MW-20 is a digital photo frame, iPhone / iPod touch stereo, and money burner all in one

If you’re the sort who fancies a digital picture frame and a stereo dock for your iPhone, Panasonic‘s new MW-20 might just be the thing to converge and satiate those needs. The 9-inch frame can display pictures via SD card, 2GB internal memory, or an iPhone / iPod touch via the bundled dock — and if you’ve got the device connected, you can also play music video via the frame’s internal stereo speakers (there’s no indication of any audio out for using your own speaker system, however). Additionally, the MW-10 successor has a touted 15 different display patterns, including some calendar and clock functionality. Pictures taken with a Lumix camera? The MW-20 has a function that’ll group photos by style (i.e. all nighttime scenery). Look for it during your haze of Christmas shopping in late November for — and here’s the part that’s gonna sting — just one dollar shy of $250. Don’t say we didn’t warn you. Scenes from the CEATEC show floor below.

Panasonic Jungle MMORPG Portable Gaming System Pictured

panasonic_jungle_leak.jpg

A great poet once wrote, “It’s like a jungle sometimes / It makes me wonder / How I keep from going under.” He was not talking about the above product, though, who knows–if the Panasonic Jungle ever does materialize, his words may well be co-opted for some marketing campaign.

There’s nothing official to speak of, at the moment. All we’ve got is a leaked shot and some testimonials from testers who managed to score some hands-on time with the thing. The Jungle is said to be built around online gaming–specifically MMORPGs.

It looks rugged as hell. It’s a bulky little clamshell that reportedly sports a terrific screen, an HDMI port, and Wi-FI, mostly likely. It also apparently runs some form of Linux, meaning that there needs to be some manner of work around to play most titles, be it ports or through a browser.

Panasonic, of course, hasn’t been a huge presence in gaming since the release of 1994’s failed 3DO.

Panasonic Lumix Phone eyes-on (video)

Right on schedule, Panasonic’s 13.2 megapixel Lumix Phone made its physical debut buried within NTT DoCoMo’s CEATEC booth. And by buried, we mean locked behind plexiglass and out of reach of our own hands. That didn’t stop the light-capturing mechanics of our cameras, however. We’re not sure where the “folding mechanism” mentioned in the press release comes from, but it looks to be a slider phone that keeps a numpad / text entry box out of view. Color options include black, pink, blue, and gold (though frankly, it looked more silver to us). Alas, that also means no chance to provide sample shots from the devices itself, but we do have a smattering of product photos from which you might derive glee — and that aforementioned video after the break.

Panasonic’s Jungle portable gaming system emerges, gets shown off on video (update: makes appearance on Rob Dyrdek’s MTV show)

Apparently Panasonic has been working itself into a frenzy over a new handheld video game console designed solely around the concept of taking MMORPGs with you everywhere you go — like you weren’t already wasting too much of your life. The makers of the ill-fated 3DO are returning to the gaming world with a portable system dubbed “The Jungle.” The clamshell device will allegedly sport a super high-resolution display, features a full QWERTY keyboard along with what looks like a touch sensitive d-pad and button arrangement, and may run atop a custom Linux build. The Jungle will also apparently sport a mini HDMI port, a micro USB port, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. To our eyes, the system looks a little on the clunky side, with a definite air of something out of Nokia’s N-Gage line — not a good thing for a 2010 device. Alongside the system itself, Panasonic will launch a Battlestar Galactica title for the device, and a web show called Online Underground.

We’re digging up more details right now, but the company (actually an offshoot of Panasonic called Panasonic Cloud Entertainment) has already set up shop with a site and a few teaser videos. Check out the mysterious new handheld in another pic and some videos after the break (including a look at the Battlestar Galactica title), and stay tuned as we unearth the full story on the Jungle.

Update: Well that didn’t take long. We’d heard rumblings that the console would make its way to an MTV show, and sure enough, the Jungle has shown up on Rob Dyrdek’s Fantasy Factory. Rob apparently is making a “jingle” for the unreleased device, which looks rather huge in the hands of the skateboarder. Obviously Panasonic is desperately trying to create some viral hype around the device (leaks to a few blogs and this MTV appearance), but we’re pretty unimpressed thus far. Maybe the jingle will convince us. If you’ve got video — send it our way!

The Best 3DTVs [3D]

Some 3D HDTVs actually kinda suck. The 3D effect can break down during fast movement and the active shutter glasses sometimes create a constant flickering effect. If you want decent 3D, check out these great sets recommended by Televisioninfo.com. More »
