Kaz Hirai non-confirms the PlayStation Phone and tablet

Kaz Hirai, President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, just twirled a fine dance around the PlayStation Phone. In discussing Sony’s future strategy for offering a coherent and extremely expansive consumer offering, he used the words “tablets,” “smartphones” and “PlayStation” in the same sentence, whetting appetites but never taking the leap to confirm what we all pretty much know his company is working on:

Strategy encompasses driving the development of a variety of new strategic products and services including tablets currently in development as well as smartphones, all the while of course integrating the knowhow and the assets that we’ve accumulated from our PlaySation business.

Oh Kaz, just admit it.

Sony’s PlayStation Phone finally gets Xperia, PlayStation logos

We’ve heard of the mysterious, still-totally-unofficial PlayStation Phone running Android 2.2 in the past, but we’d also heard it could run 3.0 — thing is, that was back before we knew Gingerbread would be 2.3, so it’s possible that those 3.0 rumors ended up materializing as 2.3. Capiche? Anyhow, this is the first time we’re seeing the Xperia Play (or Zeus Z1, or whatever it’ll end up being called) running 2.3 in the wild, doing its thing next to a white Xperia X10 to give you an idea of scale. The lucky poster actually has two of the phones available, so they seem to be leaking out of factories in sufficient quantities now to suggest that it’ll likely be announced soon — or so we hope, anyway. CES? MWC? We’ll know soon enough. Follow the break for the 2.3 evidence up close.

Also notable: these appear to be new hardware builds that feature refined touch surfaces — notice the engraved circles — along with PlayStation-themed and Xperia logos at the bottom (notice the telltale square, triangle, X, and circle shapes). The screen shots call out a model number of R800i, which has previously been associated with the Zeus… so this is definitely lining up nicely.

[Thanks, Sze]

Angry Birds Hitting PlayStation

Thumbnail image for angry-birds-plush.jpg

You cannot stop the Angry Birds–heck, even containing them seems like a lot to ask these days. The popular casual is set to hit the PlayStation Network this week, after incredibly successful runs on the iPhone, iPad, and Android operating systems.

Of course, we’ve known for a while now that the title would be arriving on consoles in the near future–back in November, it was announced that the game was set to arrive on the Xbox 360, Wii, and PlayStation–but this is the first definite word we’ve gotten about the next step in Angry Birds’ evolution.

The Official PlayStation Blog let the world know this week, burying the news toward the bottom of a post about the week’s releases. No word on pricing yet–though the game thus far has been rather cheap (free in the case of the ad supported Android version). The PlayStation Network version of the game, which will be available on both the PSP and PlayStation 3 will feature 63 levels of bird-flinging game play.

Dates for the Wii and Xbox versions have yet to be announced.

How Are The PS3′s And Wii’s Doing On eBay?

This article was written on November 22, 2006 by CyberNet.

PS3/Wii on eBay

It has almost been a week and it looks like the sales of PS3′s and Wii’s have dwindled down a bit on eBay. I have seen some of the Playstation 3′s go for as low as $850 which is just a few hundred above the actual cost of the system. That’s not that bad considering the fact that the “real” sales on eBay were previously going for around $3000. The Nintendo Wii is  also extremely reasonable and will only run you around $400 on eBay.

Looking through the auctions will reveal some amazingly clever schemes to try and get people to buy from them. One of the most common things is having a girl pose with the system. Some of them even appear to be topless (even though nothing is visible) in hopes of getting a little boost in sales. This auction, for example, says that the girl will hand deliver the Playstation 3 to the winner if the sale got above $19,000…but the auction has already ended and it didn’t even get a bid at the ridiculous $10,000 starting price.

When I sorted the listings according to price this was one of the first ones to come up. That is because the starting price is $1 million but they are kindly accepting and promptly declining offers. What’s so special about this auction? With the current 72 offers and more than 10,000 views this is what they are offering:

YOU ARE BIDDING ON FOUR BRAND NEW PLAYSTATION 3 (60GB) PLUS FOUR NEW NINTENDO WIIs!!!!  YOU ALSO GET 1 OF EVERY GAME YOU WANT FROM OUR HUGE LISTS BELOW!!!  These will all be PERSONALLY hand delivered to 4 addresses of your choice!!!… I WILL LITERALLY FLY/DRIVE TO THE ADDRESSES YOU GIVE ME DRESSED UP LIKE SANTA!

The auction is actually a little misleading because it says you get 1 of every game that is listed…but looking at the pictures makes me think you get 1 of every game for every system! It is absolutely crazy what some people come up with and are able to get their hands on.

Windows XP partially re-created in LittleBigPlanet 2, ups the stakes for gamer ambitiousness (video)

We’ve seen an CHIP-8 emulator and even a virtual CPU built inside games, but we’ve yet to encounter a game recreation of Windows. Thanks to a quartet of industrious LittleBigPlanet 2 beta players, though, we can now finally check that off in our copy of 100 Geeky Projects You Must Witness Before Dying. As the video above shows, major Windows functions they’ve emulated to date include a working start menu and mouse cursor, multiplayer support for a variety of bloatware games, and even the good ole’ blue screen of death. That’s pretty impressive stuff from an ambitious platforming title that won’t officially ship until mid-January. Needless to say, once the full version arrives, we expect to see a working copy of Lion running stat. You heard us folks — we’re setting the bar that high.

PlayStation Phone Coming in Spring – Rumor

PSP go.jpg

Keep in mind that the so-called PlayStation phone is, so far as we know, as real as Bigfoot. We’ve pretty much got rumors of sightings and a lot of blurry photos to go on. Now, granted, Sony execs haven’t exactly gone out of their way to deny the existence of such a device, but they’re apparently waiting until they’re good and ready to launch the Android-based, gaming-centric smartphone.

According to a new report from the Japanese paper Asahi Shimbun, the device is set to hit the US and Europe this spring–and while the paper does expect it to arrive in Japan as will, it will apparently be hitting our shores first.

The paper also offered up some specs for the rumored device, which will apparently be physically based on the not particularly well received PSP Go–albeit with a slightly smaller form factor.

Sony’s Kaz Hirai talks up virtues of touch controls, weighs in on PlayStation phone

The PlayStation phone keeps popping up time and again, and still no one at Sony is going to flat-out admit anything — but that hasn’t stopped playful speculation. Even SCE chief Kaz Hirai is joining in the fun. “We don’t want gamers to be asking, what’s the difference between that [a PS phone] and a PSP… we have to come up with a message that users will understand,” he told The New York Times. “It would have to be a product that keeps the PlayStation’s strengths intact.” So that’s the issue, then, differentiating a new PSP and a variant with phone capabilities — nothing a good marketing campaign can’t fix, if you ask us.

But enough about the phone, what of the PlayStation’s portable brand in general? Hirai seems to fancy touch controls, actually. “Depending on the game, there are ones where you can play perfectly well with a touch panel,” he said, adding that “immersive games” — the ones he think are Sony’s focus, vs. the more casual fare offered by Apple and Android — do well with physical buttons, and that some games work well with the two. We can’t help but notice he said touch panel and not touch screen, which reminds us of the touchpad we saw on the PS phone leaks, but we wouldn’t want to harp too much.

Ben Heck constructs military-grade, self-contained PlayStation 3 suitcase (video)

If you caught the latest episode of The Ben Heck Show, then you no doubt saw this era’s modding mastermind piece together a PS3 console suitable for use in the wilds of Afghanistan. The military-grade portable gaming system was designed and built for a couple working with the military overseas, and it’s Pelican’s iM2600 Store Case there on the outside keeping things safe and secure from flying shrapnel. As Ben always does, he managed to carefully place an entire PS3 console deep within the confines of the enclosure, and he even threw in an integrated LCD into the lid to prevent any additional external hookups. Generator equals gametime, as they say. Head on past the break for the latest episode, which shows the play-by-play on how it was constructed.

Update: Turns out the folks that Ben built this case for are now taking matters into their own hands. Currently based in Afghanistan, Erica and Kris have founded Rugged Outdoor Gaming Units, Etc (R.O.G.U.E.) in order to build and sell similar hardcore gaming enclosures, or PeliStations. They’re aiming for an early spring release, and we’ll definitely be keeping an eye on them.

PlayStation App for iPhone, Android Doesn’t Play Games

playsttion_iphone_appn.jpg

I’ve got good news and bad news. The good news is that there’s a PlayStation app coming soon for the iPhone and Android handsets. The bad news is that it doesn’t actually do what you’re hoping it does–i.e. play games.

The app is more of a supplemental resource for PlayStation owners. You can use it to check things like trophies and friends’ statuses, discover information about new games, read the PlayStation Blog, and share info via Facebook, Twitter, and e-mail. PlayStation phone it’s not.

The app is coming “very soon” to European markets like the UK, France, Germany, Spain, and Italy. More markets will follow later.
