PSA: Sony says counterfeit PS3 controllers could explode

We’re not sure why anyone would buy a knock-off DualShock 3 or SIXAXIS gamepad, considering the trouble Sony’s taken to make sure they don’t work, but the PlayStation 3 manufacturer has another reason you might want to steer clear of counterfeit pads — they could be tiny Li-ion bombs poised to explode. Talk about force feedback! Yes, the company that brought us exploding laptop batteries says that third-party products “which are practically identical in appearance to genuine PlayStation(R)3 wireless controllers” may burst into flame, and as you might expect, Sony suggests that you run out to your nearest retailer and purchase the real deal instead.

Sony’s PlayMemories app brings 3D photos to your PlayStation 3

This wasn’t mentioned among the other 3D-related PS3 announcements Sony made during its Tokyo Game Show press conference last week, but it looks like the company has another little bonus in store for those that just can’t get enough 3D. It’s just announced a new PlayMemories application that will be available as a free download in “late September,” and will let you view both 2D and 3D photos captured with a 3D-compatible camera (including Sony’s NEX-5/NEX-3, WX5 and TX9). No peek at the app itself just yet, unfortunately, but we’re guessing it’ll be available any day now — it is technically late September, after all.

Sony VAIO laptops start getting PS3 Remote Play update in the US

It’s been available for some VAIOs in Japan, and some intrepid individuals have even gotten it working on non-VAIO computers, but it looks like VAIO users in the US can now finally get some official PS3 Remote Play support. We’re still trying to track down a complete list of the computers supported, but it looks like the update at least covers the VAIO EA series, and includes all the functionality you’d expect — streaming, Bluetooth keyboard support, etc. Be sure to let us know in comments if the update has hit your VAIO.

PS3 firmware 3.50 is a go, 3D Blu-ray movies suddenly feel more wanted

Right on schedule — or a day early, depending on your time zone — Sony has unleashed version 3.50 of its PS3 firmware. And as previously promised, it’s got 3D Blu-ray movie playback with it. According to the Official US PlayStation blog, there’s also some added Facebook integration and new methods of grief reporting. We’re still updating and will let you know what else we might unearth.

Update: Surprise, surprise, it works. We were able to test Blu-ray 3D out and got it running without too much hassle, as long as the HDMI setting is on “Auto” it will detect your 3DTV and switch to the correct mode just like it has for gaming since the update that enabled 3D functionality there. We didn’t see any differences in the menus with the Disney Blu-ray 3D demo disc we had on hand, but we’ll be checking out how BD-Java functions in 3D later on.

Update 2: Per Sony’s v3.50 support page, and verified by several sources, the PS3 has to choose between Blu-ray 3D playback and lossless audio, whether from DTS-HD MA or Dolby TrueHD, it will fall back to a compressed codec while playing 3D content, while menus, items and BD-Java contet “may be different” on the PS3 than on other systems.

PS3 holds breath waiting for Gran Turismo 5 release, turns blue at TGS

We knew it was coming, and now here it is: Sony‘s special edition PS3. To commemorate the impending release of GT5 the console is turning blue, and while the rather vibrant version we saw in the official press photos from August didn’t do much for us, seeing the thing in the flesh (admittedly behind glass) gave us quite a different impression. It has the same matte finish as the current PS3 slim, but the rich blue gives it almost a metallic effect. It’s really quite a looker, and while we wouldn’t normally splurge for such “special” editions, how often does a new Gran Turismo come around? Once a decade at most. This Gran Turismo 5 Racing Pack hits Japan on November 3 for 35,980 yen. That’s about $420 of those dollars you’ve been saving for oh so long.

We’ve been waiting for 3D Blu-ray support to hit the PS3 for a good long while now, and Sony‘s been promising it would happen for, well, exactly that same amount of time. Yesterday the company confirmed that the 3D-enabling 3.50 firmware update is less than a week away, dropping on September 21, and here’s proof that it works: a demonstration unit up and running at TGS. PlayStation Move on sale now at Amazon

While the PlayStation Move isn’t supposed to go on sale until September 19th, that hasn’t stopped a few local brick-n-mortar shops from breaking the street date. Now Amazon’s jumped the gun and put the PlayStation Move $99.99 Starter Bundle up for sale a few days early. And with local express delivery, you can even get it shipped today if you qualify. Worse case, use one-day shipping and you’ll still get it before the Joneses.

PS3 update 3.50 adds 3D Blu-ray movie support starting September 21

Sony may still be relying on Kevin Butler and Marcus Rivers to sell its gear over here, but it looks like the company’s entered an entirely different realm in Norway. It’s just rolled out a new ad campaign for the Norwegian launch of the PlayStation Move that features the “MoveMen,” a dynamic, all-seeing duo that watches for a lack of partying and delivers the Move to those in need. Capcom dishes the dirt on its Nintendo 3DS graphics

According to a recent Capcom investor Q&A, it looks like the company’s upcoming Nintendo 3DS games will be developed using the MT Framework — the same game engine used for PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii titles. This means that graphics features like “HDR lighting, real-time color correction, self-shadowing, normal mapping, depth of field and motion blur” will be making their way to your handheld — whenever it should become available.
