RAmos’ Q25ihi touchscreen PMP hits Korea under MuMu Music brand

If there’s one thing RAmos hasn’t been fond of lately it’s buttons, and it looks like it’s not about to change its ways with this new Q25ihi player, which keeps things about as simple (and familiar) as can be. It doesn’t look like the company is cutting too many corners with the parts this time around, however, as the player apparently sports a 3.1-inch capacitive display, along with a G-Sensor for screen rotation and “retro flexion functions,” a built-in FM tuner and transmitter, support for all the usual audio / video formats, and capacities ranging from a mere 1GB to 16GB. No word on a price just yet, but it looks like the player should now be available in Korea under RAmos’ MuMu Music brand, and will soon be available in China as the Q25L.

Hama cases foreshadow 5G iPod nano, 3G iPod touch at IFA: hands-on

We know you don’t really need any more evidence that Apple is gearing up to unveil at least two new iPod revisions at its forthcoming ‘rock and roll’ event, but are you seriously going to hit the ignore button on these? If you’ll recall, last year’s visit to Hama’s IFA booth gave us early access to cases of Apple’s then-upcoming round of iPod nanos, and this year the company seems to be disclosing all of Cupertino’s secrets once more. On hand were cases for Apple’s fifth-generation iPod nano and the third-generation iPod touch, both of which seem to make room for a built-in camera. Of course, these lovely peripherals could be nothing more than a complete waste of company resources, but we’d encourage you to browse the gallery below before jumping to that conclusion.

Creative announces Zen X-Fi2 touchscreen PMP (video)

Creative’s Zii EGG may be snagging the majority of headlines for the company these days, but it looks like it’s not about to let its regular PMPs fall by the wayside, and it’s now announced its new Zen X-Fi2 player that ditches the few buttons found on the original Zen X-Fi in favor of full touchscreen controls. That, of course, also comes with an increase in screen size (to 3-inches), and a new interface that seems to include a few elements from that patent filing we saw a while back. Otherwise, the specs aren’t too far off its predecessor, including the same 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB options, a microSD card slot for further expansion, a built-in microphone and FM radio, an RSS reader (which must be synced up with your PC). Still no firm word on a release date, unfortunately, but you can now pre-order it from a number of retailers for $129.99, $179.99, or $229.99, depending on the capacity. Not convinced just yet? Then perhaps smooth jams of the videos after the break will change your mind.

[Thanks, Sim]

Archos 3 Vision PMP given one-handed shakeycam review

Archos 3 Vision PMP given one-handed shakeycam review

Curious about how well the new Archos 3 Vision portable media player stacks up to its bulkier, more voluminous predecessors? Perhaps the video review after the break courtesy of Archos Fans forum user roylovelock will satiate your curiosity — it will, at least, make you a bit queasy thanks to the handheld camerawork. Placed next to an Archos 5 the thing looks positively lilliputian, but its 3-inch touchscreen seems more than adequate and, while 8GB of storage may not be much, microSDHC expansion offsets that. The review praises the device’s functionality, including integrated FM receiving and broadcasting as well as its seemingly solid hardware design and upwards of five hours of video battery life. Not so highly regarded is the non-responsive UI, with a curious on-screen thumbwheel that looks highly unintuitive — at least when used by this particular thumb. The video below is informative but a bit painful to watch, so feel free to skip straight to roylovelock’s written impressions on the other end of that read link, which are rather more easy to take in on a Monday morning.

Samsung’s YP-R1 now really official, ships next month

It ain’t the first time we’ve seen a gizmo take a backwards approach to launch, and we get the feeling it won’t be the last. After leaking out, getting reviewed and hitting the all-revealing FCC, Samsung’s mildly exciting YP-R1 portable media player is finally an official product in the megacorp’s product line. Expected to debut at IFA here in just a few days, the 8.9 millimeter-thin player will boast DivX compatibility, a 2.6-inch touchscreen, TouchWiz interface and a Beat DJ feature that enables owners to add in their own crackly voice and space-themed sound effects to songs. We don’t expect the $180 starting price to budge much, though exact pricing details should be uncovered in Berlin within the next few days. As for shipping dates? It’ll march out next month in Europe, with “other markets including Russia, China, Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan to follow.”

Archos 2 Vision, 3 Vision and Clipper spotted in French wilderness

With the 2 Vision’s price and spec recently emerging, all that was missing were some “real life” shots of the player without studio lighting and professional makeup. Archos Lounge has gone and filled that gap, with the added bonus of some 3 Vision and Clipper sightings. Disappointingly, whereas the touch-sensitive horizontal slider originally looked to have been bracketed by buttons sitting flush with the case, in reality those are of the bumpy, cheap looking variety. We can take no umbrage with the thin casing though, as it looks just as skinny as we were led to believe. Hit up the read link to explore the player for yourself, or slide past the break to see it side by side with the 3 Vision.

Video: Samsung’s YP-M1 TouchWiz interface given a sideways glance

With an “NVIDIA chipset” (presumably, Tegra) underpinning the new YP-M1 media player, Samsung’s got plenty of horsepower to drive its customizable TouchWiz UI across that 3.3-inch AMOLED touchscreen sporting 480×272 pixels. It’s not ZuneHD-sexy but it’s not bad. Unfortunately, not bad’s not good enough in a waning market for dedicated media players lacking voice and data radios, WiFi, or a web browser. But if you run, run, as fast you can… after the break you’ll catch the Gingerbread Man.

Update: Mike Rayfield, the general manager of NVIDIA’s mobile business unit, confirms the M1 is Tegra-based.

Samsung YP-R1 get first unboxing, approving review

You should already be familiar with (or able to guess) the YP-R1’s specs and pricing, so we’ll just head straight to the good stuff. Our colleagues at MovePlayer handled a pink sample of the device and liked its 720 x 480 uncompressed video playback, slim casing, DJ utility (your use of which will be inversely proportional to your age), and the host of extra features like FM radio, voice recording and photo organizer. Their one major gripe related to scrolling around in landscape mode, but all in all they found it a very competent, sophisticated-looking entry into the PMP market.

Yinlips Projector PMP is a PMP with a projector

You might not know this, but your portable media player is “shackling” you down with its shockingly small screen. What you, and every other self-respecting technophile, need is a projector to explode your awesome digital media onto the nearest wall, flat surface, or just some guy’s shirt. Nikon popularized this projector integration madness, and now Yinlips is continuing it with the 3.5-inch Projector PMP, which claims it can beam out a humongous 80-inch picture (we’d be impressed if it can do half that) and play 64-bit games of an unspecified variety. Further info is scant right now, but we suspect you could fill in the blanks with your favorite generic Chinese PMP‘s specs and you’ll probably be pretty much spot on. You’ll know more as soon as we do.

Atree J100 gets lost in the forest of Korean PMPs

We certainly can’t knock the 4GB Atree J100 when it comes to its well stocked arsenal of goodies: it has a three-inch touchscreen, an e-dictionary, DMB digital TV tuner, video playback, and microSD expansion — and it plays music too. Audio formats are also plentiful, with MP3, WMA and OGG for the commoners, and FLAC and APE for the lossless fanatics. Too bad it’s held back by the chunky casing, which looks big enough to have fit a five-inch screen if the designers were so inclined. With slicker-looking competition from the likes of Cowon and Samsung, the otherwise entirely useful J100 might struggle to stand out, but if you’re willing to look beyond its superficial shortcomings, it’s available now for 198,000 KRW ($158).
