Video: Highlights, Lowlights From CES 2010

This year’s Consumer Electronics Show was a little muted (largely thanks to Google, who announced its Nexus One aka iPhone clone right before the convention) but there were diamonds in the rough. In this edition of the Wired video podcast, senior editor Dylan Tweney sums up the highlights — as well as the lowlights — of CES 2010.

3-D TVs dominated the show floor, with fancy sets showcased by almost every major video manufacturer including Sony, LG, Toshiba and Panasonic. Our favorite was the Cell TV from Toshiba — a set packed with multiple eight-core processors to convert standard 2-D video into 3-D. Wowzers.

CES 2010
E-book readers of many flavors also flooded the show floor. Plastic Logic’s Que was a noteworthy item with its especially large 8.5-inch screen — like a sheet of letter-sized paper.

We ooh-ed and ahh-ed at a particular Samsung notebook. What’s so great about it? Its 14-inch screen is a 40-percent transparent OLED display, so you can see right through it — kind of like that awesome tablet in Avatar.

Another notebook that caught our eye was Lenovo’s Skylight “smartbook” — a netbook with a smartphone processor promising 8-hour battery life — mostly because it was the freshest looking mini note on the block.

As for lowlights, we dissed on long-winded keynotes put on by Microsoft and Sony, companies that could both use some lessons in showmanship. We also rolled our eyes at custom celebrity gadgets from Lady Gaga, P Diddy and even Ed Hardy.

For full coverage of the convention, visit Wired.com’s CES 2010 page.

This episode of the Wired video podcast was produced by Annaliza Savage with editing by Michael Lennon, audiowork by Fernando Cardoso, camerawork by John Ross and still photos by Jonathan Snyder.

Engadget Podcast 178: CES 2010 Day 4 – 01.09.2010 [Chopped n’ Screwed Remix]

I hopped off the plane at LAS with a dream and my MacBook Pro
Welcome to the show of tech and glow, whoa will I make a big win?
Jumped in a cab, here I am for the third time
Look to the right, and I see the CES sign

This is all so crazy, everybody seems so nerdy
My tummy’s turnin’ from some cheese I ate at DigEx
Too much e-ink and I’m wired
That’s when the podcast man turned on the radio

And the Miley song was on
And the Miley song was on
And the Miley song was on

Video: iPhone Apps for Shutterbugs

Let’s face it: The iPhone’s camera kind of stinks. And if you suck at photography, it really makes it obvious. Fortunately, there’s a host of iPhone apps out there to beautify your shots. The ones I like most maintain the iPhone’s principle of keeping things simple.

In this episode of the Gadget Lab video podcast, I demonstrate two iPhone apps that make image editing easy and one app that lets you quickly post photos on the web. CameraBag is a $2 app that automatically applies effects filters to your photos, TiltShift creates a depth-of-field effect to make photos look professional and Flick It is a free app that uploads shots straight to Flickr.

This episode of the Gadget Lab podcast was produced by Annaliza Savage, with camera work by Michael Lennon, and audio engineering and video editing by Fernando Cardoso.

Gadget Lab Video: iPhone Game TowerMadness Is Addictive, Time-Sucking Fun

At the end of a long day, there’s nothing more gratifying than watching hordes of aliens fall victim to your laser cannons and missile turrets. What the hell am I talking about? TowerMadness, a tower-defense strategy game for iPhone that should remind you just a tiny bit of StarCraft.

The objective is to defend your flock of sheep from aliens, cockroaches and other strange creatures hell bent on abducting your woolly friends. You do so by building towers containing laser cannons, grenade mortars, missile turrets and other weapons to defeat the invaders; each kill gets you a few dollars. The strategy lies in how you arrange these towers, when to build them and what weapons you decide to buy.

It’s pretty damn addictive and fun after you get good at it. The full game costs $3; a free version, Tower Madness Lite, is also available in the App Store.

Check out our video review above for a quick demo. This video podcast was shot and produced by Annaliza Savage, with editing by Michael Lennon.

Introducing PCMag After Hours

0,1425,i=237870,00.jpg

What? Is it 2004 already? Yes, that’s right, PCMag has taken a bold step into the early-to-mid-00s, with the launch of another podcast. The show is called After Hours. and it’s co-hosted by Kyle Monson and yours truly. After Hours, which goes online Friday mornings, is a bit different than the PCMag Radio podcast: It’s looser and (we’d like to think) on the funny side.

Why’s it called After Hours? Well reader, I’m glad you asked. We literally record it on Thursday nights once everyone else has gone home, in the PCMag podcast studio/Lance’s office–and there may or may not be beers involved. I can neither confirm not deny that last item.

Also, as some of you old-school PCMag readers may remember, After Hours was a section in the bygone era of PC Magazine’s print existence, designed as a fun alternative to the rest of the magazine’s coverage. Speaking of discontinued things, Gearlog Radio fans (both of you) will be happy to know that the “Hot Five in Five” segment has been resuscitated in After Hours.

Also of note is our theme music, recorded entirely by Kyle–using Rock Band instruments. Who said that game wasn’t for serious musicians?

This new episode is actually the third. The first two–Pirates! and E-mail!–can be accessed at PCMag.com. Junior Labs analyst PJ Jacobowitz is our guest on the new episode, in which we talk about DSLRs and pocket camcorders. There’s also a very special Mother’s Day guest appearance by my mom. She was tough to book, but we managed to get her.

In honor of the new show–and the fact that it’s Friday afternoon–I’ve made a quick list of some of my favorite podcasts. Not necessarily the biggest or the best, just the ones that I actually listen to on a regular basis. Enjoy, and feel free to contact us at afterhours@pcmag.com.
