If you ask us, the whole Adam tablet is a concept until Notion Ink delivers something other than promises, but things are looking up for the less jaded among you. Rohan Shravan has updated the world on the Adam’s latest condition, disclosing a new replaceable battery ‘concept’ and the addition of a comic book store. We’re not sure whether that means the final retail unit will or won’t have a user-swappable cell, but at least we now know that both the Pixel Qi- and LCD-equipped variants of the Adam will share one body design. The switch that turns off the Pixel Qi backlight will do the same for the LCD model, saving battery power when you’re either downloading or listening to the Engadget podcast. We’re also told things are moving faster than originally scheduled and the FCC should get a look at this long-awaited tablet a week early. As to the rest of us? Who knows, but maybe there is a tablet god.

Ubuntu version 10.10 is about to come out on 10/10/2010 and score a perfect 10 out of 10 with reviewers. Or so the devs hope. The successor to April’s Lucid Lynx has this week shrugged off the alpha label and stridden bravely into the world of beta software. GUI modifications are of course apparent, along with performance tweaks promising even faster boot times, but on the whole it doesn’t look to be as big a leap as there was between the Lynx and Koala versions. The default photo management program is now Shotwell, replacing F-Spot, and there’s an update to the Software Center allowing you to purchase paid-for Linux programs in an App Store-ish sort of way. Nothing’s available to buy yet, but the plan is for that feature to go live with the final launch in October. The most intriguing thing about this Meerkat for us just might be the Unity desktop interface, which is now the default for Ubuntu Netbook Edition. Lest all the paper-based leaks weren’t sufficient evidence for you, we’ve now got ourselves an insider at one of Verizon’s brick-and-mortar outlets informing us that Fascinate launch kits are being distributed. VZW is said to be training up its staff (presumably that involves more than just pointing out where the above puzzle piece should go) and the whole thing’s looking “right on track” for the mooted early September launch. So that basically gives us about a week’s time to kill with 21:9 HDTVs, 3D prototypes, slinky tablets, and whatever else we can find at IFA. We might just be able to manage it.

We weren’t exactly sure whether the next milestone in the Firefox 3 pre-release lifecycle was going to be an Alpha or a Beta, but we know now. Mozilla just released Firefox 3 Alpha 8 as another developer preview, and judging by the current state I would say that they will be ready to start the Beta builds soon.

According to the release notes here are all of the new features since Firefox 3 Alpha 7:

• Basic and unpolished UI for starring and tagging pages has been added, as well as a richer Location Bar autocomplete algorithm that matches against page title. Here are possible mockups of upcoming features.
• Prompt for remembering passwords is no longer a modal dialog
• Built in malware protection (which you can test here)
• Basic and unpolished UI for indicating richer website identity information has been added
• A new Applications preference panel for configuring handlers for various content types has replaced the Download Actions dialog and the Feeds preference panel
  
• All Firefox add-ons must now use a secure method for auto-updating
• Firefox now quits properly (instead of just being killed) when Windows is shut down or restarted
• You can also see the full list of all bugs fixed since Gran Paradiso Alpha 7

So the next milestone still hasn’t been classified as an Alpha or Beta build, but it should be released either way around the end of October. Despite having a lot of work to do on the Bookmark Organizer I still think that they can get all of the groundwork laid so that they can begin the Beta process. As always we’ll keep you informed of the new feature as they become available in the nightly builds.

Here you thought that Windows 7 wasn’t going to bring that “killer” feature we’ve all been waiting for. Well, you were wrong… big time! The third milestone of Windows 7 has been shown off to what appears to be a small group of people, and in it users are noticing that apps like Paint and Wordpad are adopting the Office 2007 Ribbon style interface. UX Evangelist managed to snag a screen capture of the new Paint interface, and all joking aside it does look a little snazzy.

Now that Microsoft is moving some more of their own apps over to the Ribbon interface I think that other third-party programs may look a little deeper to see if it would be feasible for what they have to offer. Unfortunately this type of interface doesn’t work great for every program, but I wouldn’t mind seeing what certain apps (such as Photoshop) would be like with a Ribbon. Some programs have already gone this route, and the commercial screen capture utility SnagIt is the first one that comes to my mind.

Unfortunately no screenshot of the revamped Wordpad was provided, but I think the ribbon interface would fit very well with that as well. If these two redesigned apps don’t make you want to buy Windows 7 I don’t know what will!
