Locationbar² Updated for Firefox 3

One of my favorite Firefox extensions, Locationbar², has finally been updated to work with the recently released Firefox 3 Beta 4. It can be used to make the domain that you’re currently viewing stand out more than the rest of the URL, which makes users less susceptible to phishing attacks.

You may recall that midway through last year we saw a feature very similar to this make its way into the nightly builds of Firefox 3, but it has since been removed. I’m not sure if Mozilla intends to reimplement the feature, but at this point it’s not looking very likely. What’s interesting is that the new Internet Explorer 8 Beta went ahead and added in this feature.

One thing that really makes Locationbar² stand out though is its ability to generate breadcrumbs from the URL that you’re currently viewing. To do this just hold down the Control or Shift key, and then hover over the address bar. You’ll notice that you can click on the different segments of the URL, which makes it a little easier to go back to the main domain or up a “directory”.

If you want your address bar to look like mine does in the screenshot you’ll want to add http:// into the Hide protocols box in the Locationbar² settings, and then also check the strong box.

VLC 0.9.0 Includes Last.FM Support

VLC is one of the most well-known media players out there, and it’s been almost 4 years since they’ve released a major new version. VLC 0.9.0 is on the horizon, and it packs in 2 years of development… so you can expect some great things. There’s just one gotcha: Windows 98/ME and Mac OS X 10.3.9 are no longer supported operating systems.

So what’s new in this release? One of the biggest things would have to be the revamped interface seen in the screenshot above. The preferences have been drastically overhauled, and are now broken up into “simple” and advanced settings. That way new users aren’t overwhelmed by the number of things that can be configured.

Beauty is only skin deep though, and that’s why there’s much more than the flashy new interface that’s worth a look:

  • Improved playlist support: Shoutcast TV listings, Audioscrobbler/Last.FM support (in supported countries), album art, and more
  • Better tag support
  • Supports most types of subtitles
  • New and enhanced filters
  • Improved mouse gestures
  • Full support for meta data editing (ID3v2, Ogg/Vorbis, AAC, APEv1/2)
  • and more…

If you’re looking for the Last.FM support you’ll have to dig through the options (Tools -> Preferences). You’ll need to be in the “advanced” view by filling in the All bubble located in the lower-left corner. Then navigate to Interface -> Control Interfaces -> Audioscrobbler. From there you can enter in your Last.FM username and password. Then click on the Control Interfaces section, and check the “Submission of played songs to Last.FM” box. VLC will share your listening habits with Last.FM from there on out.

You can grab a pre-release version of VLC 0.9.0 (Windows installer), or you can wait for it to reach final form. From what I can tell this is shaping up to be a nice release.

Microsoft Office 2010 Icon Pack

In our WrapUp earlier this morning we talked about how a new build of Office 2010 Beta had been leaked, and in this build Microsoft included new icons for each of the applications. It didn’t take long for someone to extract all of the icons from the release and assemble them into an icon pack, which is exactly what one DeviantArt user did (our download mirror).

I’ve pasted the icons for each of the main applications below, and that includes Access 2010, Excel 2010, InfoPath 2010, OneNote 2010, Outlook 2010, PowerPoint 2010, Project 2010, Publisher 2010, Visio, 2010, and Word 2010 (in that exact order). Each of the icons are 256×256 pixels, and come in both ICO and PNG formats if you download the pack. In all there are over 60 different icons included in the download.

What do I think of them? Well, I actually like them. They feel modern, and one of the first things I thought of when I saw them for the first time was how much they reminded me of the icons Adobe uses… mostly because of how prominent the lettering is on them. I think they fit the Office Suite well.

Vista SP1 Introduces Hotpatching

Vista Restart Computer Microsoft must be prepping for the release of Vista SP1 RC1 this week because they have posted several documents that outline some of the features found in the upcoming Service Pack. One particular document covers the notable changes that have been implemented in Vista SP1 thusfar, and it has over 10 pages worth of bulleted lists covering some of the great additions.

One item in particular caught the eye of the Neowin editors. It discusses a feature dubbed hotpatching, which will enable patching of Windows components without needing to restart your computer. More specifically, it says that Vista SP1…

Enables support for hotpatching, a reboot-reduction servicing technology designed to maximize uptime. It works by allowing Windows components to be updated (or “patched”) while they are still in use by a running process. Hotpatch-enabled update packages are installed via the same methods as traditional update packages, and will not trigger a system reboot.

This is a feature that was outlined two years ago, and was originally supposed to ship with Vista. I’m not sure if non-Microsoft applications will be able to take advantage of this improved update process, but it will surely improve the user’s experience if they can.

One concern that I do have is the security behind such a system. Will viruses and malware now be able to install and activate themselves without even needing the user to restart the system? I’m sure Microsoft has tried to plug any backdoors, but it’s inevitable that hackers will try to take advantage of this new update technique.

ASUS preparing an ultraslim Eee PC ‘with a twist’ for Computex

ASUS’ week of merciless teasers continues today with a silhouette of what the company calls a “super-slim sensation [with] a twist.” It’s an Eee PC and there are no doubts about it being a netbook, but something about this evolutionary product won’t be quite the same as on its predecessors. Notebook Italia has dug up the above image, which looks like a match for ASUS’ shadow-obscured teaser and shows what may very well be the thinnest Eee PC we’ve yet seen. Last time ASUS was touting anything laptop-shaped that was quite so slim, it was the Neo smartbook prototype that never made it out of the labs, but this here cheese slicer looks very likely to be hitting the market shortly after Computex. Naturally, we’ll be in Taipei getting the lowdown for you, whatever happens.

Mac Office 2008 Download Leaked

Microsoft’s Mac Office 2008 won’t be released until sometime in January, but those of you who are eager to get your hands on it don’t have to wait much longer. File sharing sites have already started to distribute a 465MB download of the Beta version to anyone that wants it, and accompanying the download is a working serial number.

What’s this mean for everyone that doesn’t want to download it illegally? In no time at all you’ll be able to find Office 2008 Reviews blanketing the web, and a well-written review has already been posted over at the InsanelyMac forum. A follow-up poster also added screenshots of the splash screens for each of the individual apps.

One of the things people have been the most excited about is the Entourage 2008 software, which is kind of like Outlook for Macs. Many were hoping that it would finally be the product that they all wanted, but the reviewer wasn’t too fond of it:

It does take a long time to open, it makes strange noises at random times(like when you turned off email notification and it is idle). With this Application, I think that Microsoft tried to pack too much into one Application. The UI itself is not very space efficient and it is slow to use.

In the end the reviewer gave Mac Office 2008 a 4 out of 5 after ignoring the issues that will probably get fixed by the time it ships in January. I can’t wait to read what everyone else thinks of it.

Yahoo Messenger 9 Beta Includes Flickr/YouTube Integration

Yahoo Messenger 9 Beta has been in production for months, and yesterday it received and update that provides even more improvements and features. One of the things that really caught my attention in their demonstration video was the Flickr and YouTube integration, which automatically converts hyperlinks into embedded media. That way you can share and watch YouTube videos without ever leaving the chat window.

There are a significant number of other features that they include in this release as well. You can, for example, import contacts from other services such as Gmail and AOL, but that doesn’t mean you’ll be able to chat with your friends on all of those other networks. Here’s a more detailed list of features provided by the Yahoo Messenger blog:

  • Games are back! – Checkers, pool, toki toki boom…you know the rest. Note that your friend needs to be on 8.1 or this latest release of 9.0 Beta to play games with you.
  • Status message improvements – The status message menu has been split into two parts – one where you can indicate your availability (busy, available) and the other for putting in a custom message or a link you want to share.
  • Yahoo! Updates – Yahoo! Messenger is one of the first products to showcase what your friends are doing on Yahoo!. When a friend buzzes a favorite news story or changes their Avatar, a Yahoo! Update is displayed next to that friend in your contact list (with more detail in their contact card).
  • Import Contacts – Select “Import Contacts” from the Contacts menu and you can add friends from address books you have on other sites like Gmail, Orkut, Yahoo! Address Book, Hotmail, AOL and many more. We’ll pull in your contacts and make it easy for you to start talking with them on Yahoo! Messenger.
  • Voice in chat rooms for Vista users & faster Captcha process – We added a fix to this latest version of Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 Beta that allows Windows Vista users on 9.0 to use voice in chat rooms (and conferences).
  • New IM notification toast – When a new message comes in to the background window, a small notification will pop up from the lower right corner of your screen with the beginning text of the IM your friend just sent.

We’re not dealing with price estimates anymore, here’s an honest-to-goodness pre-order for the HP Pre 3. Amazon Germany, a traditionally quick retailer to put device listings up, has added the webOS 2.2 QWERTY slider to its online catalog at a price of €449 ($640) — though availability is predictably undefined for now. Lest your memory needs a refresher since the Pre 3’s announcement back in February, this is a 3.6-inch smartphone with a WVGA (800 x 480) resolution, a 1.4GHz Qualcomm MSM8x55 processor, 512MB of RAM, and a pair of cameras, the rear of which can record 720p video and 5 megapixel stills.
