Should the classy white, or the patriotic red and blue PlayStation controllers not take your fancy, Sony’s rolling out another hue just for you, discerning consumer: pink! The Japanese maker of everything with an electronic pulse has a bit of a tradition with this color and it’s not like the great PS3 hasn’t been licked by a few strokes of red lite before. Pricing is your typical $54.99 for this wireless console commander and GameStop should have them in within a couple of weeks.

Sony just released its 3.42 software update for PlayStation 3 owners. As a mandatory update, PS3 jockeys must accept it if they want to continue accessing the PlayStation Network or PlayStation Store. While Sony’s American mouthpiece isn’t saying much about the release, Sony Japan says that it fixes a “hardware security issue,” and that’s it. Sounds like a patch for PSJailbreak and its open-source variants to us.

Despite a temporary victory stopping PS Jailbreak sales in Australia, Sony’s PS3 headaches are far from over. With PS Jailbreak’s code in the wild, lawsuits may be too little too late.

PSGroove claims to be an open source PS Jailbreak. Users download the code and install it on an AT90USBkey or Teensy++ USB development board to get the modchip up and running.

While the PSGroove is not as easy as the PS Jailbreak for the average gamer, but an entrepreneurial hacker can easy sell pre-assembled PSGroove kits to the average Joe PS3.

A USB drive, PS Jailbreak lets you run unsigned software, including legitimate backups, on the PS3. You can run the backups from the internal hard disk drive, or use PS Jailbreak to backup the games to external storage devices. Once saved, you can run the games from the external drive as well. Despite the lawsuit in Australia, PS Jailbreak is already available in Canada, US, and Europe.

With this code, you don’t even need the original game disc anymore to play. Imagine emulators to the PS3. The possibilities are endless. What’s next, Sony?

Sony has just informed Euroland that its Qriocity on-demand ecosystem will be showing up in the continent’s wealthier regions this fall. France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK will get a chance to savor the Video On Demand option, which will form the vanguard of a wideranging content streaming service, available on Sony networked devices — yes, that includes the do-it-all PlayStation 3. The heavyweight movie studios behind the venture include 20th Century Fox, Lionsgate, MGM, NBC Universal, Paramount and, of course, Sony’s moviemaking arm. But you already knew that, given that the whole enchilada’s been available to American gringos since April. All Qriocity participants will get to use a new Music Unlimited service, which is launching by the end of the year with as yet undetermined pricing. Plans are also afoot to offer Qriocity on third party devices, but until then you’ll wanna make sure to have one of them newfangled web-connected Bravia TVs or any of the litany of Blu-ray players and home theater setups Sony is busy promoting right this minute.

The PlayStation Move. It’s funny to think just 15 months have passed since Sony first unveiled its motion controller, and now we’re mere weeks away from hitting the retail market.
