Sony’s PlayStation 3 Slim Is $300 in September

As if K-Mart’s front-page ad wasn’t enough to confirm, Sony’s officially announced their PlayStation 3 Slim that retails for $100 less than the current PlayStation 3 fat, which is also getting a price cut. Update: We’ve got first impressions here.

The slim will come with a 120GB drive, and will be 32% smaller and 36% lighter than the standard PlayStation 3, as well as using 34% less power. The $300 price will apply to all PlayStation 3s starting tomorrow. The Slim will be available everywhere by the first week of September.

Here are some more details. The 80GB PS3 (current model) will be discounted to $300, whereas the 160GB PS3 will be $400. There will be a new PS3 logo as well as modifications to the official name from PLAYSTATION 3 to PlayStation 3 as to not be shouting all the time.

It’ll also have a BRAVIA Sync feature that’ll allow you to control the PS3’s XMB with your Sony TV remote as long as they’re connected via HDMI. And the TV will automatically turn off the PS3 when the TV goes off.

There’s also a vertical stand retailing for $24 on September 3. Whether or not you can stand it up vertically for long periods of time without the stand is unknown. Sony also says that they’re eliminating the feature of installing other operating systems on the Slim, so no more Linux.

Oh, and there will only be two USB ports.

PS3 Firmware 3.0 Brings Bigger Icons and Better Themes

I’m actually a big fan of Sony’s XMB, but if I didn’t own a large plasma, it would be pretty tough to read. Luckily, some interface tweaks are coming in Sony’s 3.0 firmware to address the problem.

Specifically, a new “What’s New” folder replaces the Information Board. Highlighting this folder produces large icon pop-ups that will link you straight to a recently played game or a spot on the web. This icon system is used in the PS Store as well, connecting you to video content and games with a bit more ease.

Themes, too, are seeing a bit of a revamp, including premium options with avatars and animated backdrops. Yeah, premium themes copy Microsoft a bit, but that’s not necessarily bad for anyone.

For a better picture of the new stuff than my words can paint, Sony has made this video for you. Enjoy it, friends.

Look for firmware 3.0 “soon.” [PlayStation Blog]

Sony PS3 Slim shows up for pre-order at Kmart, $300

Our suspicions about that earlier Kmart ad were spot-on. The link is now hot with specs showing a PS3 Slim priced at $300 which includes Blu-ray, a 120GB hard disk, DualShock3 controller, and HDMI output with 1080p support. It’s listed with an August 24 release date which seems a bit eager to us. The Kmart site is updating which means that some of these details could change (like the price and date) but this seems like a definite for announcement later today at Gamescon.

Update: Sears has the same offer and date.

Survey finds Xbox 360 is played five times as often as Wii, five times more likely to fail than PS3

Survey finds Xbox 360 is played five times as often as Wii, five times more likely to fail than PS3Ready for some numbers this morning? Some scary, scary numbers for Xbox 360 gamers? Game Informer, current king of the smoldering ruins of the print gaming magazine empire, polled about 5,000 of its readers to get a feel for their gaming experiences, including just how many of them had unlocked the fabled “Red Ring of Death” achievement. We’d heard estimates ranging from 16 to 30 percent, but even the most pessimistic guesses don’t line up with the survey’s findings of a staggeringly high 54.2 percent failure rate. That’s five times higher than the PS3’s 10.6 percent, with the Wii coming in at 6.8 percent. Mind you, the Xbox 360 was the most played console, with over 40 percent of Xbox gamers button mashing for three to five hours a day, compared to 37 percent of PS3 gamers, and less than an hour’s worth of gaming per day for 41.4 percent of Wii owners. However, game consoles should be designed to shrug off marathon sessions and just keep on spewing polygons, something that the first revisions of Microsoft’s baby obviously couldn’t manage.

That said, there are some problems with this survey; as far as we can tell there was no verification made that respondents actually own the consoles that they indicated they did, and we all know how people like having fun at Microsoft’s expense. Also, the survey was naturally only of readers of the magazine itself, who don’t necessarily line up with the gaming world at large. But, it’s impossible to deny there’s truth in these numbers. Indeed, it’s hard not to think they’re too low, as you’ll be hard-pressed to find an original Xbox 360 that hasn’t thrown up the three-light salute. Even so, there’s nothing to be proud of in Sony’s 10.6 percent failure rate, or even Nintendo’s 6.8, particularly given that system’s relative lack of attention. All are much higher than the three percent most consumer electronics companies strive for — and that Microsoft initially (incorrectly) claimed its console was managing.

PS3 price cuts appear in print, must be real (update: ‘new exciting Playstation 3’)

As the story goes, a Kotaku reader just received these PS3 posters (now posted after the break) into the FYE shop where he works. You’ll notice that the “new low price” is augmented with a “while supplies last” disclaimer indicating what could be a close-out on the 80GB (soon $300, reduced from $400) and 160GB ($400, reduced from $500) PlayStation 3 models. More evidence, perhaps, that a PS3 Slim announcement is imminent — even as soon as today’s Sony presser at the Cologne Gamescon Expo that kicks off at 12 noon ET or 1800 for those of you on Central Europe time.

Update: Kmart is now in on the action with a front-page ad (pictured above) that says the “rumors are reality” and then promises linked details about “new low price and a new exciting Playstation 3.” Unfortunately, the link isn’t populated with the new prices or the new model yet but we’ll keep digging.

[Thanks, Jeremy23j and Daniel]

PlayStation Network conveniently down for maintenance during Sony’s press conference today

There’s something very peculiar about Sony bringing down the PlayStation Network for “maintenance” today from noon until 2:00PM ET. Not only is that timeframe somewhat prime gaming hours for North America and Europe — and arguably Asia, too — but it also happens to coincide perfectly with the company’s press conference at the gamescom expo in Cologne, Germany, the rumored site for the PS3 Slim‘s official debut and a price cut for the original. We’ve no doubt that Sony’s got a handful of major announcements lined up for the event, revised console or no, and we wouldn’t be surprised if the online store played into that somehow. Of course, the timing of the maintenance could all be some big coincidence, but if you ask us, the chances of that are pretty, well, slim. If we’re really lucky, maybe Sir Howard Stringer will come out and explain that laughter-tracking patent.

Logitech’s $300 G27 racing wheel gives sidelined DUI possessors a taste of the road

Eager to get back on the track, but not so eager to ease up on the sauce? Fret not, our continually inebriated friends, as Logitech has just the answer for your awfully depressing road woes. The long-awaited successor to the original G25 racing wheel is finally on the scenes, as the G27 brings along real metal, real leather and a real taste of driving that can likely only be mimicked whilst seated in some sort of $30k+ sportster. The wheel is designed to function with Sony’s PS2 and PS3 as well as Windows-based PCs, and aside from the built-in force feedback mechanism, you’ll also find a pair of stainless steel shifter paddles, RPM / shift indicator lights and a clutch that fully supports heel-and-toe downshifting. Is all that realism worth $299.99? Judge with your wallet come September.

Creepy, laughter-tracking PS3 patent has us rethinking Sony’s whole PlayStation Eye strategy

Don’t they know people look at these things? A recently awarded PS3 patent includes this harrowing “FIG. 2,” which portrays a fictional idiot laughing at some “Crazy Inventors” programming, while the PS3 tracks Mr. Laugh’s every movement and sound through the PlayStation Eye. The brooding, spiteful console could theoretically pick up on different moods like sadness, excitement, joy and boredom — before presumably changing up action onscreen to quell that pesky uprising of “emotion” in the subject.

European retailer hacks €100 from PlayStation 3 in run-up to gamescom

If you know anything about European retailer Fnac, you know it’s not the go-to place for bargains. However, it’s this very outlet that’s now selling an 80GB PlayStation 3 bundle (which includes the console, a single controller and inFamous) for €100 less than its “everyday low price” as of yesterday. Of course, one major French retailer slashing the price on a system that’s long overdue for a break isn’t reason in and of itself reason to believe anything’s on the horizon, but pair this up with everything else we’ve heard over the past few weeks, and we’d say all the vague omens are pointing to a leaner, cheaper and altogether more dashing PS3 on August 18th. In our magical fantasy land, anyway.

Update: Our friends at Engadget Spanish just let us know that there’s been a price drop in Spain as well. Getting warmer…

[Thanks, Nelson]

Xbox 360 Scores Exclusive Netflix Movie Streaming, PS3 Cries Blue Tears

Those Microsoft rascals have scored a big one: The Xbox 360 is now the only game console that will get Netflix video streaming. No Sony PlayStation 3, no Nintendo Wii, no Atari 2600. That’s what the Xbox Update page says:

Netflix Partnership

This exclusive partnership offers you the ability to instantly stream movies and TV episodes from Netflix to the television via Xbox 360. Xbox 360 will be the only game console to offer this movie-watching experience, available to Xbox LIVE Gold members who are also Netflix unlimited plan subscribers**, at no additional cost.

From the Netflix Web site, simply add movies and TV episodes to your instant Queue, which will appear automatically on the TV screen via Xbox 360. Once selected, movies will begin playing in as little as 30 seconds. In addition to instantly streaming Netflix movies to the TV, Xbox LIVE Gold members can browse and rate movies, fast-forward, pause and rewind, all using either their Xbox 360 Controller or Universal remote.

Oh Sony, Sony. That has to hurt. A little. In the inside. [Xbox via Endgadget]
