Lumigon announces unveiling party for first smartphone, invites everyone on Facebook

Lumigon announces unveiling party for first smartphone, invites everyone on FacebookYes, you’re invited too. Lumigon wowed us with some simple, sophisticated looking handset renders way back in February, the S1 and the T1, promising things like HDMI output and Android 2.1 — wild things back then. Just five months on and those features sound a little more pedestrian, so we’re wondering how it will stack up when the T1 is finally unveiled in the flesh in another three months, on October 20. It’ll be a wild night when the Scandinavian Lumigon crew lets loose its keyboard-free smartphone upon the denizens of Copenhagen. Will any Dane be safe?

[Thanks, Jakob]

Look, it’s summer break. What better to do than learn a little piano in preparation for the upcoming release of Harmonix’s Rock Band 3? The next installment — which promises to bring all sorts of new kit to the market — was finally given a release date today, and not surprisingly, it’ll be quickly climbing the Santa Lists of rug-rats the world over. According to the company, the title will ship on October 26th in North America, with the Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360 versions priced at $59.99 sans hardware and the DS rendition at $29.99. Nokia N8 to launch on August 25 in UK, according to local store employee

As official confirmations go, this is the weakest kind. A Nokia store employee has informed Pocket-lint that the N8 hero device we’ve all been waiting for will be launching in the Queen’s backyard on Wednesday, August 25. That’s only a day off from the August 24 tip that we had and definitely seems to narrow down the release window, but let’s retain our signature skepticism. Until one of Nokia’s higher-ups or their PR team busts out an official release date, we’re still dealing with speculative information. Then again, if you wanna book that week of August off from work, we’d totally understand.

New Windows XP SP3 Release Date: April 29th

This article was written on April 15, 2008 by CyberNet.

I know that many of you are anxiously awaiting the release of XP SP3, but it’s almost as if Microsoft has kept it out of the public’s hands to put all eyes on Vista SP1. After a mirage of release dates it looks like we may have some more that bare consistency with what we’ve heard thus far. Neowin managed to get their hands on the internal schedule for Windows XP SP3, and it goes something like this:

  • April 14, 2008: Support is available for the release version of Service Pack 3 for Windows XP
  • April 21, 2008: Original Equipment Manufacturers, Volume License, Connect, and MSDN and TechNet subscribers
  • April 29, 2008: Microsoft Update, Windows Update, Download Center
  • June 10, 2008: Automatic Updates

The key dates that you’ll want to remember are April 21st and April 29th. It won’t officially be available to the public until April 29th, but if MSDN and TechNet subscribers get it on April 21st you can bet the bank that it will be “leaked” all over the Internet the same day. These dates all match the “late April” release date that we previously heard for XP SP3.

And as expected it will be about a month and a half after the release for it to be pushed out via Windows Update.

HP MediaSmart Price, Release Date, Pictures

HP MediaSmart Home Server

Isn’t it great when sites like Amazon are given information regarding a product, and they publish the details right away. I think Amazon is known for leaking pricing and release dates of items, and they’re at it again with the HP MediaSmart Home Server.

Amazon had two different pages setup for the MediaSmart Servers: a 500GB model and a 1TB model. Both of them had the launch prices posted (which I’ve provided below) and have since been removed. The release date, announced as September 15th late November, will mark the beginning of a bright future for Windows Home Server.

Here are the specs as provided by Amazon:

  • HP MediaSmart EX470 (GG795AA#ABA)
    Cost: $599 (£299)
Processor: AMD LIVE 64 1.8 Ghz Sempron
    Storage: 500GB (1 x 500GB)
    Dimensions: 9.7 x 9.2 x 5.5 inches
    External USB Ports: 4
  • HP MediaSmart EX475 (GG796AA#ABA)
    Cost: $749 (£374)
Processor: AMD LIVE 64 1.8 Ghz Sempron
    Storage: 1TB (2 x 500GB)
    Dimensions: 9.7 x 9.2 x 5.5 inches
    External USB Ports: 4

The HP MediaSmart Servers will also be supplied with the HP Photo Webshare software, which makes it easy to securely share your photos with friends and family. I’ve also heard that this software will let other people share photos with you. I’m really interested to see how that will work.

Unfortunately there is no mention of how much memory (RAM) the computers will have, but I would guess that they will be supplied with at least 1GB. Overall I think the price for the system sounds reasonable, and I may have to consider picking one of these up.

Nintendo 3DS may launch in October, say ‘UK industry sources’

How the mighty have fallen. Where just last year companies like Apple and Nintendo were renowned for their ability to keep completely silent about impending hardware, these days the thrill of exposure and some media pressure go a long, long way. Now, if Computer and Video Games‘ sources are to be believed, Nintendo’s had another leak: an October release date for its autostereoscopic 3DS handheld in the UK. That’s well within the original “before March 2011” timeframe, and apparently a surprise for game publishers currently planning software for Holiday 2010. Besides, since Europe typically gets Nintendo systems after the US and Japan, some lucky dogs might get the system even earlier — we’ll let you know when we see it ourselves at E3 this June.

Apple names April 30th, 5PM as date and time for 3G iPad retail launch

There was a bit of confusion with Apple’s online store update yesterday as to when the 3G version of its iPad will actually make its retail debut. Let that fog of ignorance be no more, as Cupertino has today named April 30th, a Friday, as the day the WiFi + 3G slate will arrive in stores. In American stores, that is, don’t get all excited if you live outside the 50 states. That’s also the date when early (read: before yesterday) pre-orders will be fulfilled. Deliveries for those were promised for “late April,” though clearly this date has more of the late and less of the April to it.

iPad 3G coming by May 7th

Apple has just updated its online store with a shipping date for the 3G-equipped variants of its iPad. As you can see, all varieties of the hallowed Apple tablet should be out and about by May 7th — meaning that some deliveries could sneak out even earlier — and you can expect AT&T will be ready and waiting for you to activate that $30 a month unlimited data plan. Just for the European record, that means the iPad will be out in full force for American consumers three days ahead of the announcement of specific international availability. Ah well, at least that gives the UK and others hope that they might see the 3G and WiFi-only slates coming out at the same time, which should be somewhere around the end of May.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Update: We’ve heard from numerous tipsters that 3G iPads pre-ordered before today are still on track for a somewhat woolly “late April” delivery. It seems, therefore, that the new date relates to pre-orders being taken from here on out. Here’s the direct quote from Apple’s email:

“To Our Valued Apple Customer:

Thank you for your recent order of the magical and revolutionary iPad 3G.

We would like to confirm that your order will be shipped in late April as communicated at the time you placed your order. You will receive a confirmation notice when your order has shipped.”

Wine 1.0 Release Date… After 15 Years in the Making

This article was written on March 24, 2008 by CyberNet.

wine birthday In 1993 a project called Wine was started as a way to run Windows applications on Linux without using an emulator. Instead Wine serves as a compatibility layer that includes their own implementation of the Dynamic Link Libraries (DLL’s) that make the Windows applications tick, and there has been a lot of reverse engineering done to get it to the current state.

It took over 12 years for the first Beta version of Wine to be released, and after a whopping 15 years Wine 1.0 will be shipping on June 6th, 2008. This has got to be one of the longest development cycles to reach version 1.0!

One of their big goals for Wine 1.0 is to get Adobe Photoshop CS2 fully functional, which is something Google is sponsoring. With over 1,200 compatible Windows applications adding Photoshop CS2 to the list will definitely be a huge success for the team and the software as a whole.

I’m definitely excited about Wine 1.0, but you can bet the bank that Microsoft isn’t jumping up and down in their seats. Sure it means that they might sell more copies of Office, but as far as I know Microsoft has never exactly gone out of their way to help out Wine.

Office 2008 for Mac Release Date Pushed Back

This article was written on August 02, 2007 by CyberNet.

Office 2004Mac users were supposed to be getting the newly redesigned Office 2008, but as it turns out the development team hit a snafu. Now the release date for Office 2008 on Macs is getting pushed back from Fall 2007 to January 2008. Yes, all Intel Mac users running Office 2004 have about 5 more months that they will be putting up with the sluggish performance because of running it with Rosetta.

The new target date of January 2008 will put the release just in time for Macworld, which is where all of the biggest Apple fanatics gather at the same time. So what was the cause for the delay? Craig Eisler, the Microsoft Mac Business Unit’s General Manager, said:

There was no one thing that caused the push—it was more of a perfect storm. The switch to Intel processors, the switch to different tools in the development stream, the switch in formats with Office—all of it presented different roadblocks for the team, and we wanted to make sure we could address all of those issues.

If you look at the release history of Office for Windows vs. Office for Mac you’ll find that the Mac version is typically released 6 to 8 months after the Windows version. Office 2008 is going to be one of the longest delays between the Windows and Mac versions coming in almost a year after-the-fact. Technically it is a year and two months if you count when Office 2007 was released to businesses.

Current Mac users will need to use a file converter that Microsoft offers if they want to open Office 2007 documents. However, that only handles Word and PowerPoint documents.

Alright…I’ll close things up with some screenshots from Office 2008 running on a Mac. These were taken back in January, so some things have probably changes since then:
