Medion announces LifeTab P9514 tablet, mysterious Android smartphone at IFA

Medion enjoyed a pretty eventful weekend at this year’s IFA in Berlin, where the German PC maker unveiled a new Android tablet and a rather obtuse Gingerbread smartphone. Known as the Lifetab P9514, the company’s 32GB, 1.6-pound slate is powered by a 1GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor, runs Honeycomb 3.2 and features a capacitive multitouch display with 1280 x 800 resolution. The device also supports both quad-band 3G and WiFi connections, along with the usual smattering of HDMI, microUSB, and microSD ports. Medion’s new phone, meanwhile, remains decidedly more mysterious. At this point, we know that the 4.3-inch handset rocks a five megapixel shooter and comes pre-loaded with the manufacturer’s GoPal satnav app, but further details remain murky. Both devices are expected to ship within Europe during Q4 of this year at unconfirmed prices, though rumor has it that the LifeTab will run for €399 (about $564). No word yet on whether we can expect to see either product hit the US anytime soon, but you can catch a glimpse of the freshly unveiled smartphone, after the break.

Verizon launching Droid Bionic September 8th, giving some away through an AR scavenger hunt (update: it’s already arriving in stores)

It’s been a long and tortuous road for the Droid Bionic. From our first taste of its dual-core potential at CES, to the stream of leaked specs, shots and release dates of the phone in the months since. Well, the wait officially ends on September 8th, as Verizon just confirmed the release date with a new version of the robotic battle teaser ad we saw a couple weeks ago. Big Red has also launched a Droid Does website with info on VZW’s Droids and its new Arena augmented reality scavenger hunt — where deft digital orienteers can win a Bionic, HDTV, laptop, tablet, or quadrocopter. Will Toshiba’s next tablet be named the Excite? Trademark filings suggest so

Yesterday, we caught wind of a rumor that Toshiba would be unveiling a new, ultra-thin tablet at this year’s IFA. Today, word on the street is that the company’s forthcoming slate may be called the “Excite.” According to US Trademark filings obtained by Android Police, Toshiba has apparently registered the purported product name under the category “Tablet Computers.” The manufacturer has also snatched up a whole host of domain names, including “excitetablet.com,” “toshibaexcite.com,” and “thetoshibaexcite.com” — all of which currently redirect to a Toshiba site. As you may recall, remarkably similar evidence surfaced right before the Thrive launched, so recent history certainly lends a bit of credence to today’s report. LG Thrill 4G will arrive on September 4th, AT&T confirms

Following a series of delays and setbacks, it looks like the Thrill 4G will indeed be coming to AT&T on September 4th. The carrier confirmed the date late last night, in a tweet promising that LG’s glasses-free 3D handset will make our world “come alive.” Back in July, AT&T confirmed that the US version of the Optimus 3D would officially sell for $99, though that could very well vary across retailers. Nokia announces Symbian Belle alongside three new devices

True to Monday’s teaser, Nokia unveiled its latest update to the Symbian OS as well as a few new devices. Belle is indeed coming, and it’s heading to the Nokia 700, 701 and 600 in the third quarter of this year. The successor to Anna brings NFC sharing and pairing functionality to the table, along with three additional home screens (bumped up to six), a dynamic lock screen, live widgets in five different sizes, and a pull-down taskbar and notification menu. Fortunately, the new handsets announced today aren’t the only beneficiaries of the upgrade: the N8, E6, E7, X7, C7, C6-01 and Oro will all get Belle at a yet-unknown later date. Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray shows up on Vodafone UK, inches towards launch

If you’ve been counting down the days leading up to the Xperia Ray’s release, get set to add a few more X’s to that calendar. A recent product page over on Vodafone UK teases an imminent launch for the svelte, Sony Ericsson handset, and slims down that multi-hued selection to one gold-backed option. The 3.3-incher had previously been up for pre-order on Play.com with a purported mid-August release, only to see that date slip back into the folds of September. Whenever the phone does finally make it to market, expect to see this quadband HSPA-capable device sporting an 854 x 480 Reality display, 1GHz processor, 8.1 megapixel rear-facing camera and Android 2.3. Sony Ericsson unveils Live with Walkman handset for music-loving Android users

Four months after unveiling the relatively bare bones W8, Sony Ericsson has now taken the wraps off yet another Walkman phone, known as the Live with Walkman. Powered by a 1GHz processor, this Android handset features a 3.2 inch, capacitive touchscreen (with somewhat disappointing HVGA resolution), a five megapixel AF shooter with 8x digital zoom, and a front-facing VGA camera capable of capturing HD video in 720p. The petite, Gingerbread-equipped device also packs a lackluster 320MB of RAM, provides up to 32GB of microSD storage, and offers either tri-band 3G support (HSPA+) at 850, 1900 and 2100MHZ, or dual-band 3G at 900 and 2100MHz, depending on the model. And, as you’d expect, Sony Ericsson has placed a special emphasis on the music phone’s media capabilities, beefing it up with enhanced audio and Qriocity integration. The specs may not sound earth shattering, but we’ll wait until we get pricing information before casting judgment. LG sheds light on the Optimus Sol, available mid-September in Europe

The LG Optimus Sol (aka the E730) received the full hands-on treatment a few days ago, and it didn’t take long for the mystery device to be officially recognized by LG. Named after the Spanish word for “sun,” the phone gained the title for a distinct reason: it’s using a 3.8-inch WVGA “Ultra AMOLED” display, which is supposed to make the screen easier to read in direct sunlight and also offers less image quality degradation. It’s powered by a 1GHz CPU, runs on Gingerbread, features a 5MP camera, and measures out at a thickness of 9.8mm. LG also uses the Sol to introduce a new power management technique it’s referring to as “Dark UI” — by utilizing less white light as the phone is idle, the company hopes to extend battery life by 20 to 30 percent. If you’re interested in picking up what LG is putting down here, you’ll be able to do so in parts of Europe around mid-September, followed by a release to Central and South America afterward. RIM to unleash redesigned BlackBerry App World 3.0 on August 22nd

Hot on the heels of releasing its new device arsenal, RIM is prepping to roll out a brand spanking new BlackBerry App World. Scheduled to launch Monday, version 3.0 features a retooled interface for quick perusal of apps, games and themes — if the beta release is any indication. Another added feature is the My World storage folder that keeps all of your downloads on the home screen and lets you wirelessly reinstall them should you accidentally delete one or upgrade devices. Sure, there are rumblings that the BB music service will be a part of this release, but as Reuters reported, that announcement isn’t expected until early September. Although, this update would complete the new smartphone trifecta rather nicely: new device, new OS and new app store. Well done, RIM, now if you could just get your advertising in order, you’ll be all set.
