Samsung Galaxy Tab on sale in UK on November 1, will be available from all major carriers

Need some hot new hardware to offset the onset of another miserly winter? Samsung wants the Galaxy Tab to be the thing that keeps you warm and fuzzy over the holidays and has just announced a November 1 launch date for its tablet in the United Kingdom. All major carriers are signed up to offer the Android 2.2 device and usual suspect Carphone Warehouse will also be dishing it out if you have the cash to snap one up. How much cash, you ask? That’s the one important piece of information that Samsung is still leaving to hang in the air, proffering only the contention that it “will be available on a range of attractive price packages.” Never mind, we’ll just let our imaginations do the accounting.

Apple’s iPad Heading to a Target Near You

While you’re stocking up on toilet paper and sweat pants at Target, you’ll be able to stroll to the electronics section to grab an iPad.

Target will begin carrying Apple’s iPad on Oct. 3, according to an Associated Press report, at its normal retail price starting at $500. Shoppers with Target credit cards will be eligible for a 5-percent discount on the device.

The store will offer both the Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + 3G models with capacities ranging from 16 GB to 64 GB.

Other than the Apple stores, the iPad is currently available at Best Buy. Retail giant Walmart also announced plans to sell the iPad sometime this year.

Target in June also began selling the Amazon Kindle; the retailer is the only brick-and-mortar store where you can purchase the reader.

iPad has halved laptop sales, claims Best Buy CEO (update: he meant netbooks)

Well, the iPad is about one half of a laptop — both in its form and functionality — so it makes perfect sense that it’d chop laptop sales by 50 percent. We might be pulling your leg, but Best Buy CEO Brian Dunn isn’t. The dude in charge of the yellow label empire has told the Wall Street Journal that his company’s internal estimates indicate the iPad has eaten up as much as half of laptop PC market demand. In response to this perceived trend toward more portable gadgets, Brian’s outfit is rearranging its inventory to include more e-readers, tablets and smartphones for this holiday season, while slimming down its selection of desktops and HDTVs. Moreover, new demo zones will be set up in-store to allow people to experience the wonders of Microsoft’s Kinect and Sony’s Move motion-controlled gaming solutions. So it looks like the future’s coming, whether we like it or not.

Update: It did seem weird to us that the mighty laptop would be that vulnerable to the iPad, and sure enough, our queries with Best Buy were met by the following response:

“The paraphrase that was used in the WSJ wasn’t really an accurate reflection of what Brian said to the reporter.

What Best Buy CEO Brian Dunn said was that we had no firm numbers, but that we speculated there was some replacement of netbooks by iPads going on. We did not provide specifics because we do not presently have the hard numbers on which to base those specifics.”

So, Brian was not only talking about netbooks, but his words were exaggerated too. Phew, and we were just about to start selling our shares in Dell and HP. You can find his full clarification on this issue after the break.

Mitsubishi’s huge, modular OLED display set to go on sale worldwide on September 21

Before you start dreaming of 155-inch OLED displays for your home theater, let us remind you that this Mitsubishi panel happens to pack an ignobly low 69 8.5dpi pixel density. So while it is indeed a wall-sized OLED image maker, it’s not exactly designed to match up to the HD rigors of modern video. Composed of smaller, bezel-free modules, Mitsu’s Diamond Vision OLED display has gone from CEATEC prototype last year to a triumphant retail product this year, starting to be exchanged for cash, trinkets and favors this September 21. As you might have guessed, it’s primarily intended for use in digital signage scenarios — which should be great so long as nobody tries to perch one up in the sun.

iPad headed to Target on October 3rd?

Digg

It’s not quite the definitive proof that some boxes spotted in the wild would be, but a tipster has sent us a few pieces of a puzzle that seem to suggest that Apple could be expanding the iPad’s retail presence into Target stores just in time for the holiday shopping season. That includes a list featuring a mysteriously unnamed product that’s set to become available on October 3rd (in six different versions, no less), and a series of images from a Target PDA (like the one pictured above) that seemingly show that the item numbers match the iPad prices exactly, and that it will be located in the Digital Audio section — that’s apparently also how e-readers like the Kindle are classified, in addition to iPods. Smoking gun? Not exactly, but it’s certainly enough to get us to keep our eye on this one.

Samsung Epic 4G now on sale at Sprint (update: save $50 at Amazon)

We told you it was coming, now the Samsung Epic 4G is on sale at Sprint for a cool $249.99 plus two year life commitment. In other words, it’s time to let Sprint know whether this Galaxy S variant (with — gaspworking GPS) is worth the $50 premium over HTC’s EVO 4G. Well, is it?

Update: As usual, Amazon’s offering a discount showing a $199.99 listing for new contracts. It still shows a pre-order status (with 2-3 weeks ship time) but that’s likely to change any minute now.

[Thanks, Jonathan P. and Jason J.]

Samsung Fascinate ready for Best Buy in-store pre-order ahead of rumored September 9 launch

Verizon can’t be feeling too hot about being the straggler to the Galaxy S party, but the wait seems to be almost at an end. Best Buy’s just started taking in-store pre-orders for the Fascinate, while the latest internal document leak from VZW indicates a specific September 9 launch for the 4-inch Android handset. That’s when you should be able to snap the Fascinate up along with a prepaid data plan from Big Red, which fits in nicely with earlier unsanctioned disclosures on the matter. Either way, Samsung’s quest to conquer all networks with its Super Gorilla phone will be coming to a victorious end pretty soon.

[Thanks, Brian G.]

Blockbuster filing for bankruptcy next month? Probably.

It’s not official, but rumor that Blockbuster is preparing to file for bankruptcy in September is certainly believable. Expected even. According to several sources speaking to the Los Angeles Times, Blockbuster chief executive Jim Keyes along with representation from Blockbuster’s senior debt holders met last week with the six major movie studios to announce the company’s intention to enter a mid-September bankruptcy. Meetings that no doubt hoped to secure an uninterrupted flow of new content from Hollywood as Blockbuster restructures its $920 million in debt and closes another 500 of its 3,425 US stores. In its fight to remain relevant in the age of digital downloads / streaming, Blockbuster has lost $1.1 billion since early 2008. It’s expected that Blockbuster’s debt holders will likely own a substantial portion of the company when all is said and done. We call dibs on those Archos 10 netbooks.
