But after we crossed the virtual street to the virtual box office, we were informed that there were no seats left in the virtual theater. Imagine that. Niko, the N900-powered Lego robot, looks poised to take over Twitter (video)

While we’ve seen no shortage of smartphonepowered robots in the past, the Nokia camp has been sadly under-represented. But, there’s a new one coming to balance things out, a machine called Niko that has Lego Mindstorm NXT 2.0 components for a body and an N900 for a brain. The bot has been under construction for a few weeks but it has just made its YouTube debut with the short video posted after the break, showing it roving around and taking a photo whenever it bumps into something. When all systems are go and the machine is set free Niko will be posting messages and pictures to Twitter describing its every move in thrilling detail. We can’t wait for it to start picking fights with @CourtneyLoveUK.

Windows Phone 7 Series T-shirt cannon gets detailed, redefines ‘mobile warfare’

Microsoft’s MIX 10 Windows Phone app demos were highlighted by a robotic t-shirt cannon entirely controlled by a WP7S app, and the code monkeys behind the project are now back with a full breakdown of how things were achieved — the bot was built on a standard battle-bot chassis, which was then modded with the cannons and an HP Envy laptop for control purposes. Just to drill in the point about how familiar development for the new mobile OS will be, the MS guys point out that outsider assistance on the project was recruited under the pretext that what was being built were “out of the browser” Silverlight apps for the desktop. Very crafty. We’ve got video of the cannon in action waiting after the break, along with an image of the Phone controls.

DARPA sets sights on cameras that understand

DARPA wants to let you all know that its plans for the robot apocalypse are still going strong. The agency’s got IBM working on the brains, has an RFI out on the skin, and is handling propulsion and motor control in-house. Next up? Eyeballs. In order to give its robots the same sort of “visual intelligence” currently limited to animals, DARPA is kicking off a new program called The Mind’s Eye with a one-day scientific conference this April. The goal is a “smart camera” that can not only recognize objects, but also be able to describe what they’re doing and why, allowing unmanned bots and surveillance systems to report back, or — we’re extrapolating here — make tactical decisions of their own. To be clear, there’s no funding or formal proposal requests for this project quite yet. But if the code does come to fruition, DARPA, please: make sure autoexec.bat includes a few Prime Directives.

Gigapan Robotic Camera Rig Goes Pro

Gigapan’s robotic camera mounts are a favorite among hobbyists who want to create large panoramic pictures. Now the company is going after professionals whose powerful cameras need a sturdier rig.

Gigapan has released the Epic Pro, a mount that can handle DSLR camera and lens combination of up to 10 lbs. Earlier versions of the mount were created for lightweight and compact cameras. The Pro, designed with a magnesium chassis and aluminum arm, weighs about 8 lbs including the battery pack. It’s features include the ability to adjust time between exposure, motor speed, aspect ratio and picture overlap.

A year ago, Gigapan launched its first robotic camera mount called Epic that automates the process of taking different images to compose the ultimate shot. The mount allows photographers with almost any point-and-shoot digital camera to click photos without worrying about missing details that might ruin a picture when it is eventually stitched together. A software program called Stitch that comes with the device allows the photos to be blended together and uploaded to GigaPan.com where users can zoom into the detail, explore and share.

The Epic Pro mount will be available in April, says the company, and it will cost $895. The hobbyist focused Epic 100 costs $450 and the smallest rig Epic designed for compact digital cameras is $350.

Tiny, robotic space shuttle to be launched into orbit in April

A long-delayed project initiated by NASA and carried out by Boeing may finally get to see the light of cold, beautiful day according to reports from the US Air Force. The X-37, a small, robotic space plane is set to make its first unmanned trip into orbit in April. Conceived by NASA as an unmanned re-entry lifeboat for crew of the International Space Station, the X-37 reportedly has a cargo bay of just 7 x 4 feet, and it has apparently been shipped to Florida for its maiden voyage, where it will be mounted to an Atlas V rocket for its launch into space. There aren’t any other details — the people running the project are keeping everything pretty quiet, but the shuttle itself is reported to have said that it’s putting itself “to the fullest possible use,” adding that that “is all I think that any conscious entity can ever hope to do.”

iCub gets upgraded with tinier hands, better legs

We’re pretty familiar with iCub — the humanoid robot modeled on a two year old — around here. Just because we know him well, though, doesn’t really change the fact that we get the slightest chill running down our spine every time we’re reminded of his existence. Well, iCub’s getting an upgrade which includes newer, lighter legs which will be more impervious to damage, and smaller hands. That’s right, the youngster, who is about toddler-sized, has had until now, the hands of an eight-year old: pretty embarrassing for the little fellow. The new hands are the right size, and have the correct dexterity as well. Regardless, he’s still a little creepy, but as you’ll see in the video after the break, impressive none the less.

Samsung NaviBot SR8845 / SR8855 vacuum cleaner hands-on

It didn’t take long for these NaviBots to win our hearts — we only spent about five intimate minutes watching them vacuuming the floor at Samsung‘s UK product launch event, but frankly, we fell hard upon first sight. On the left we have the SR8845 basic model going for £399 ($599), and the SR8855 at the rear is priced higher at £449 ($674) with its touch-sensitive buttons (instead of physical ones), on-board scheduler (instead of a countdown timer) and a pair of Virtual Guards — boxes that create an infrared virtual fence to create a priority cleaning zone or to block the NaviBots — instead of one. That said, both bots have the same vacuum performance, have visionary mapping, run for 90 minutes on a two-hour charge, and have anti-fall / anti-collision technology to boot. Say whatever you want about the prices and feel free to doubt the bots’ sucking abilities, but hopefully the video after the break will at least leave you with a smile. Both will be in British shops at the end of April.

M3 robots used to research human development, melt hearts (video)

Let’s face it: anything that a human can do a robot can do better. Whether it’s teaching our youngsters, giving physical therapy to our oldsters, or reading bedtime stories, robots are coming out on top. Researchers at Osaka University have developed two new devices recently called M3-neony and M3-synchy (“M3″ stands for “man-made man,” while “neony” refers to the word neonate, and “synchy” to synchronized communication). The former is essentially a baby simulator that will be used to test machine learning software designed to shed some light on fine motor skill development. It is equipped with a pair of CMOS cameras for sight and microphones for hearing, gyro and accelerometer sensors, and tactile sensors. And it can crawl! The latter robot was developed to study communication through use with object recognition, speech recognition, and speech synthesis software. On the hardware end, this guy sports a head-mounted CCD camera, two microphones, a speaker, and fifteen LEDs (for making the robot blush). Needless to say, these are both very adorable — so much so, in fact, that we might not even notice if they weaponize themselves. Let’s just say the future just got a little cuter. Dead Xbox 360 is Reborn as a Mechanical Robot

The red ring of death is an inevitable conclusion for most Xbox 360 owners. But instead of mourning his console’s loss, U.K.-based student Jasper Stevens did something fun to give his lifeless and out-of-warranty Xbox 360 a second chance.


Stevens took it apart and harvested its parts to create a mechanical robot called Roboman.

“The copper wire used in the piece, the flexicable stuff and some other pieces of wiring is from outside,” he says. “Everything else is from the Xbox.”

It’s the first sculpture he has made out of gadget parts. And it took just about three hours to create.

“My recent art exam was around the theme ‘discarded’ ,” he says. “So I salvaged the parts and used some of the wire I had hanging around to make  this.” Stevens then clicked a few photos and sent it to the Technabob blog.

The entire piece is connected using wiring and there’s no glue or tape holding the parts together. The Xbox 360’s DVD drive founds its place as the base of the sculpture. The robot’s joints are flexible but it doesn’t have any batteries so you can only move it around like an action figure.
