Revamped Sony S-Series Walkman pops up in leaked press photos

The well-connected chaps at Sony Insider have it on very good word that the above press shot is showing what’ll be a new addition to Sony’s Walkman lineup, likely a revision to its popular S Series. Hard to tell scale, but looks like either the screen’s gotten bigger or the device smaller. In addition to the four color options — red, blue, pink, and just peeking in on the right, black — there’s also that perforated grill on the front, which we figure is a good sign of some speaker. Excited? Hold that thought — according to the mysterious source, this PMP isn’t scheduled for arrival anytime soon.

Natal Xbox 360 in 2010 rumor is back on

Although Microsoft’s marketing department likes to keep its execs on a short leash, you really should listen to its CEOs when they espouse launch schedules. They are, after all, CEOs and tend to have the big picture (like dates) related to major projects that drive revenue. Recall 2008, when Bill Gates told the world that Windows 7 would arrive in 2009 causing Microsoft marketing to scramble-out a redaction attempting to reset expectations for a 2010 launch. With Windows 7 now officially launching in October, well, guess who was right? Fast forward to last month when Steve Ballmer made a similar slip saying Project Natal would arrive in 2010 causing Microsoft to issue a statement that a launch date had not been confirmed. Now DigiTimes is reporting that Aptina has won the exclusive rights to equip Natal with a 1.3 megapixel CMOS image sensor required for Natal’s camera. More importantly, the Taiwanese rumor rag says that shipments of the “new version of the Xbox 360 console” are slated for the second half of 2010 — a date that sounds like Fall to us as previous rumored. Of course, DigiTimes was absolutely certain that Microsoft was integrating Blu-ray into future (that’d be 2008) Xbox 360 consoles too, so take this rumor for what it is: rumor.

HTC adopting Android on 50% of its handsets in 2010?

Uh oh Microsoft, this can’t be good news. HTC, the premier manufacturer of Windows Mobile cellphones is rumored to be shifting half of its handsets to Google’s Android OS in 2010. To put this in perspective, HTC lists 28 devices on its European website and of those, just 2 run Android, the rest are WinMo. DigiTimes‘ sources also claim that HTC is on track to make 30% of its 2009 handsets Android-based which means that several of Andy Rubin’s 15 to 20 Android handsets coming this year would have to be HTC branded for this to be true. DigiTimes also claims that HTC will launch a handset that’s simultaneously a “high-profile 3G handset” and “entry-level model” with touchscreen and TouchFlo 3D / Sense UI. HTC is said to achieve this seemingly contradictory feat by basing the handset on Qualcomm’s BREW Mobile Platform when it launches in September or October. Of course, none of this is confirmed, but will undoubtedly be a topic of discussion when HTC reports earnings on July 30th.

Next-gen iPod touch rumored to get camera, microphone, fairy dust coating

According to a “well connected source” in the Wired camp, the iPod mills in China are hard at work as we speak, churning out next-gen iPod Touch models with integrated cameras and microphones. This certainly jibes well with the tips we’ve received regarding both this device and a cam-equipped nano — although we’re still skeptical about the rumored OLED iPods. The article goes on to suggest that once you add a mic to the mix, all you need is a MiFi and the Skype application for “the iPhone experience” on Verizon’s (or Sprint’s) network. Seems like an awful lot to go through just to avoid AT&T, but we suppose that it’s good to have options.

HTC Click in the wild — Android on the cheap?

Not satisfied with your Android selection? Looking for something a little easier on the pocketbook, perhaps? Well, that’s cool, partner — look no further than the HTC Click. This thing hasn’t been announced, but rumors have been swirling for a few days now that the Click would be taking HTC’s Android ambitions decidedly downmarket, and like clockwork, we’ve now got a couple alleged pictures of it. We can’t verify the authenticity of this stuff, but we certainly don’t have any reason to doubt that it’s real — it’s pretty much what we’d envision a low-end HTC Android phone would look like. One open question would be the mystery surrounding that crazy pad arrangement where we’d normally expect a trackball to be — don’t get us wrong, we’re not married to the trackball by any stretch, but it’ll be interesting to see how well this works in practice. We don’t have any details on the Click’s release, but you can bet your sweet little green robot we’ll be passing that on just as soon as we get it.

Dell consumer products VP hints at a smartphone

At this point we’re not sure why Dell won’t just come out and say it’s working on a smartphone, but for whatever reason the company’s executives keep hinting around it. Case in point: Dell consumer division VP Ron Garriques, who told analysts yesterday that the company would “work with the top three to four” carriers “and see what their needs are.” That’s only slightly more concrete that what we’ve been hearing Michael Dell say for a while now, but apparently Ron got a little more specific: reports from the event also say he indicated that plans are being drawn up to launch products in the US, Asia, and Europe. We’d love a full transcript to figure out exactly what went down, but remember that Mr. Garriques here is the ex-head of Motorola’s mobile devices unit, so he’s got some experience cranking out handsets for every market. Just a note, though, Ron: if you ever pull an Adamo on us and reveal a product without specs, you are so not invited to sit at our table for lunch anymore.

T-Mobile’s BlackBerry Curve 8520 launching on August 5th at Walmart?

You have to look closely but in the text of the message above circulated around Wal-mart you can clearly make out a date for the launch of the BlackBerry Curve 8520. So August 5th it is, under a two-month exclusive retail arrangement according to our Walmart-employed tipster. That’s the same date T-Mobile will be shipping out its myTouch 3G for those keeping track. That jibes with what looks to be an 8520 “Sneak Preview” pre-launch party kicking off on July 20th and scheduled to run for two weeks. See the invite after the break.

Update: Looks like one has already hit eBay. Thanks, Ben!

Acer A1 Android and F1 WinMo Snapdragon smartphones in September?

Ah DigiTimes, what would a morning be without your rumors sourced from within Taiwan’s component suppliers? Today’s tattle has Acer launching its A1, C1/E1, F1, and L1 smartphones “at the end of September and in the fourth quarter” — that a four-month spread. Of these, the F1 running WinMo 6.5 (pictured above) on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon platform and A1 running Android are undoubtedly the most interesting. It’s just rumor but it does corroborate the hushed September whispers already heard.

BlackBerry Storm 2 dummy unit appears in Verizon systems

Looks like RIM and Verizon are getting things in place for the Storm 2 — this picture posted on CrackBerry purportedly shows an entry for retail mockup units of RIM touchscreen sequel in Verizon’s inventory system that seems to confirm the rumored 9550 model number is the real deal. Considering how leaky RIM’s been lately this doesn’t surprise us any too much, but we’re still waiting to see a Storm 2 that actually functions before we say an actual launch is imminent.

Raon Digital: maker of UMPC monstrosities meets its maker?

There’s nothing official yet, but evidence is mounting to suggest that Raon Digital has closed up shop in similar fashion to OQO before it. Following rumors of bankruptcy and anecdotal observations of limited stock and reduced service, all Raon Digital communications have gone silent and the website’s been taken offline. If true, then the demise will be met with styli held at half mast by UMPC enthusiasts who were particularly fond of the overpriced ($879 at launch) and problematic Everun Note “premium” netbook. For everyone else, rejoice, your fears of a Vega 2 may have been assuaged.
