LEAK: The Google Phone “Is a Certainty”

According to a trusted source who’s seen it with their own eyes, the Google Phone “is a certainty.”

And by “Google Phone” we don’t simply mean another Android handset. We’re talking about Google-branded hardware running a version of Android we haven’t yet seen.

Over the next few weeks, Google Phones (most probably in early, prototype form) will flood the Mountain View campus. They’ll don large LCDs while running a new version of Android—either Flan or the version of Android beyond it—which our source spotted running on Google’s handset as well as a laptop. (Whatever the software was, it most certainly wasn’t Chrome OS, we were assured.)

But maybe the most intriguing bit is what someone said to our source offhandedly, that the current Android, the we all know and love, is not the “real” Android. So what makes for a “real” version of Android?

Our best guess is an Android OS with Google Voice at its heart.

Mysterious iPhone model found in app usage records?

O iPhone3,1, where art thou? Last time we spotted that signature, it was buried in lines of code as part of a beta OS 3.0 firmware build. Now according to data from analytics software inside iBART, the San Francisco-centric transportation app has been host to a new visitor with the aforementioned device identification number. As MacRumors points out, iPhone2,1 was originally spotted in October 2008 and later became the iPhone 3GS about eight months later. Not that it’s necessarily the case Apple will keep to the same schedule — nor should it come as a surprise that the company’s maybe-kinda-sorta looking into a successor to its prized moneymaker — but if you happen to be in the Bay Area and see someone quietly pulling out a sleek touchscreen, it might be in your best interest to make friends.

Google Search’s New Interface Being Tested Now

The rumors published last week may be true after all: Google is testing a new search interface on random people, as these screenshots from Gizmodo reader Matt Karolian confirm.

Like the Google Wave-inspired interface for Gmail, the new user interface is cleaner and bolder than the current version, offering more options to the user. It may still be far from deployment, however, but it’s good to see some changes after so many years of same all same all.

Video Demonstrates Wired’s Concept iTablet App

Who takes Apple’s rumored touchscreen tablet seriously? Wired’s parent company Condé Nast. Earlier this week, the corporation revealed its plans to work with Adobe to repurpose magazine content for upcoming digital devices, including the Apple tablet (if it is indeed real). The first mag to get the tablet treatment, of course, is Wired.


All Things Digital’s Peter Kafka first reported that news, and he said he was trying to convince Condé to share a video demonstrating the tablet app. Well, here you go. The video above was shot at the Wired Store promotional event currently being held in New York. On display there is a concept video of Wired’s “iTablet” app.

To me, the most interesting part appears around the 30-second mark, where we can see an animated, interactive graphic. Exciting to think about the potential for this hypothetical new format, isn’t it?

Enough said. Here’s a good time to ask — what do you think? Could an Apple tablet save publishing?

Motorola Motus specs leaked, headed for AT&T?

Slowly but surely, the Motorola Motus is coming into focus — sort of. Hot on the heels of that super blurry shot we saw yesterday, BGR has some specs for the mid-range Android set, which seem to indicate this one’s not much more than an AT&T-oriented variant of the Cliq: 850 / 1900 / 2100MHz 7.2Mbps HSDPA, 3.1-inch capacitive 480 x 320 display, microSD expansion, MOTOBLUR, and a Qualcomm MSM 7201A CPU, which will undoubtedly be clocked at 528MHz. Unfortunately, there’s no word on what version of Android is on this thing, but we’ve got the sinking feeling it’ll be 1.6, given the last-gen hardware and Blur UI. Not the most impressive first Android set for AT&T — let’s hope there’s a better surprise in store.

Firefox headed to the PS3? Can life get any better?

Playstation Insider‘s got a tipster (one that’s reportedly “very close” to the company) telling them that Sony is in heavy talks with Mozilla to port Firefox to the PS3. The tipster didn’t know if any actual deal had been struck, but it’s not terribly surprising considering the PS3’s current built-in browser is less than awesome. That said, Firefox has actually crashed twice on us in the last 15 minutes, and no, we’re not making that up.

Microsoft leaks a screenshot of Windows Mobile… something

Microsoft’s been pretty cagey with the future of Windows Mobile so far, but apparently the Office Mobile 2010 team just doesn’t care — in addition to leaking a new interface in that confidential slide deck last month, they’ve now included this screen shot on the Office Mobile 2010 beta website. Here’s what’s wild: this design language completely matches the first set of Windows Mobile 7 leaks we saw nearly two years ago, so either Microsoft hasn’t made any changes in that time, or what we’re seeing here is something else entirely. Combine that with rumors that WinMo 7 isn’t due to hit until the end of next year, and we’re starting to think there’s something bigger afoot here — the only other alternative is that Microsoft has waited nearly three years to launch what’s little more than a refresh of its current interface, and even Redmond can’t be that slow to execute… can it?

Lenovo T410s leaks out, features not one but two ThinkLights

Two Lenovo leaks in one day? Our cup runneth over. It feels like we just played with the T400s and the T400s touch just yesterday, but we did see some leaked slides forecasting a T410s for January back in June, so these images are basically right on schedule. Big changes include a couple more USB ports here and there, some cleaned-up design, and — big news — the addition of a second display-mounted ThinkLight keyboard light. That’s simply decadence, friends. No word on specs, pricing or a release date, but we’ve got a feeling we’ll be finding out more real soon.

Leaked Shots: PlayStation 3 to Get Facebook in Next Update?

These dashboard screens—reportedly found directly on the UK version of PlayStation.com—suggest the PS3 will soon have Facebook integrated into the Cross Media Bar interface, plus a new photo viewing option, and the ability to change gamercard colors.

OK, the last one isn’t super interesting, but the Facebook feature would be nice. Looks like Sony caught on before we had the chance to confirm the pics ourselves, but ScrawlFX says it found the them here, here and here. [ScrawlFX via Kotaku]

NVIDIA Fermi GT300 GPU delayed until 2010?

We’re so sorry, true NVIDIA believers, but that airbrushed “I love Fermi” shirt is just gonna have to wait a little longer to see the light of day, at least according to a report from our favorite chip-centric foreign news syndicate, Digitimes. Taiwanese industry sources say the release of its Fermi GT300 GPU has been delayed until Fiscal 2011, which for the company means not until at least late January 2010. That “NVIDIA New Year” fete you’ve been gloating about on Facebook? We really hope you can get the deposit back on the rented space.
